old when you get some time, could show the area you see the boy in nickers

im seeing a whole dif thing, not sure what vor means by pillar

There are scratches on the negative on the right side near the windshield post (pillar). That adds to the confusion.

Below is what I see. Its just a guess. Could be anything or nothing. What do you see? I'm definitely open for a different suggestion.

The car is a right hand drive version, built for those countries where folks drove on the left side of the road.
In this case Australia, state of Victoria.

I'd say the object on the hood and behind the hood ornament, is either Aileen's handbag or a camera bag.
What Old has labeled as legs, is probably one of the handles (straps)

What if the witch/priest figure is neither and what if the hat is an exaggerated poorly craved Sombrero th.jpg. Isn't Weavers Needle also know as the Sombrero.

I did try to look that up- and it looks like GM purchased Holden (Australia's largest motor company) in '31 and merged it with GM Australia as a subsidiary so they would probably have gotten CKD bodies and assembled them at the Woodville plant in South Australia.

Think you are on target with ID'ing that thing as a camera bag- that does look like one.

I envision Travis rolling up to the station and asking to use the hose under the pretension of filling up the radiator (or he did have to do that) and then when nobody or few people were around, pulled out the Stones for a quick wash and photo while he still had a running hose. That would explain the partially open hood and leaving the camera bag in the shot- the whole thing was done in haste.

One little problem. The heart stone in the gas station photo is glued together. If he just found them and was cleaning them how do you explain that. The break marks are in both photos

Wow Frank!! You are absolutely right - the break lines in the heart stone in the bumper photo and the museum photo are exactly identical.

Here is a comparison

Frank:

I believe the heart stone and the H/P stone at the museum are the originals, with the two trail stones being copies.
If Travis found the heart stone in two pieces, as he told one of his friends, then Travis would have been the one who glued the pieces back together sometime after finding them underneath the 2 stones. For the bumper photo, the two pieces would have been held together by the pocket itself.

Bill:

If you look closely at the original ( the one with the fancy border) photo, there is virtually NO distortion of the grill lines, headlight or hood ornament.
Aside from the cracks, caused by someone folding the original print at some point, possibly by carrying it around in their pants pocket or pack, and some very fine wrinkling also visible on the left front fender (but not on the hood or right fender etc.) there is no other distortion. IMHO, they are the original stones.
As I said yesterday, I also believe the photo was taken at the side of the road, on the shoulder of US 60 opposite from where Travis said he found the stones.
The unlatched hood, as deducer has said, fits the overheating scenario, while the shadows of the bumper-bracket and stones indicate the sun was directly out front of the car...(late morning if the car was parked on US 60 and facing SE), and the blacked out portion indicates Travis did not want anyone seeing the photo ( locals mainly ) to be able to identify what was in the background.....Superstition mountain, the road cut, and the bridge.

That does not explain the glue residue marks in both photos that are exactly the same. The story is he stopped and washed off the dirt. That does not fly.

Frank:
I doubt that what we are seeing there is glue residue, although there are white patches and lines which may have been caliche deposits.
Without testing, it is impossible to tell exactly what the darker stuff is, but if it's glue, it's here and there all over the stone.
More likely it's a crusting of some other mineral.

What is under the car bumper? Also, the upright is missing from the front of the bumper where the body mount clips are located. What's up with that?

If you look at the heart stone on display closely in person at the museum I doubt you would question that is glue residue marks. A very poor job of gluing the stones back together.

maybe the gas station had some glue, if they did TT was there awhile as the
glue looks dry, what kind of glue was there in 1949

Thanks for agreeing with me, if you would do some research you would find that I had pointed that out long ago. Not Peralta was claiming that the heart stone had been broken in Bob Wards cabin by some kids that were playing with it. The bumper photo shows the same heart that is in the museum, and it shows that it was already broken, and glued when found.

What if the witch/priest figure is neither and what if the hat is an exaggerated poorly craved Sombrero View attachment 1177429. Isn't Weavers Needle also know as the Sombrero.

It's a long-haired Mexican who wears a tall sombrero and has a fetish for crosses.

Good point though, and one reason so many have thought of the pointed sombrero as a depiction of Weavers Needle (with a hole in it maybe?)

Homar that is also possible. Already repaired before rediscovered. A crime lab study on the glue would be interesting. Assuming it was only repaired one time in its history.

I was at the museum today, and the stones looked 100% fabricated with a rotary tool. I think Ryan's conclusions are correct. And car models, glue claims, hose claims, and car model claims are simply immaterial. This was a con job from day one, so none of that other stuff matters.
