The stones in the bumper photo may have been much rougher than the copies we have seen, including those in the SMM.
And the red heartstone is made of a different type of stone as well.....slate or shale as far as I can tell. DA Inc. said quartzite, as I recall.
The latin heart was said to be of a brittle black stone. Perhaps slate as well.
If the 4 inside the small heart on the H/P stone means 4-hearts, then there should be two more out there somewhere.

Gary took photos of Travis' "indian heads" while he was visiting Tumlinson's relatives.
The ones he posted were not heart shaped though.
But was there anything like that on the back sides of those stones ?

There is no argument...plain as day and on point. All monuments and entrances, symbols/carvings ect.

Don't think Travis Tumlinson spent much time in New Mexico other than passing through to Texas.

Their gospels don't hold weight

If one of "Their gospels" is the Tumlinson discovery story, I agree.
Travis, I am convinced, did not "discover" the stones as many believe.
Travis was a Hassayampa which, by its original definition, would mean that he was (thru deceit) protecting something important.

Your image (beautiful country btw), is the strongest that I have seen when compared against the drawing.
Nice job.

I've been to that valley KX. Your not the first ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1435072635.571621.jpg

Look at how perfect the heart insert is carved on the trail map. Then look at how rough the heart stone is carved. It looks off when inserted. Is there a perfect fit heart stone out there. Does it have a Indian head carved on it looking in a certain direction. Has anyone heard this rumor whispered or seen a drawing or photo. I wonder if the stone maps were made to fit this heart stone using a old leather Spanish map as a guide.

Hi Frank:

Didn't Tom K. say that the gravestone maker/cowboy from back east carved them and buried them.
Maybe Tom knows if Johnny Steele ? used an old leather map to make them, and might know something about a stone with and indian head like that.

I went back to Gary's website for a review of the letters he has posted.
This is the only thing I can find that describes such a stone.
Doesn't say very much, other than it was found north of the Columbia River by Travis and Bob Schultz.

Travis was behind all this and the idea did not pop up from nowhere. They were searching for something in the eastern Superstitions. What did Peg Leg have stashed? A very interesting history with that family.
If I needed to make a map during that time period leather is perfect. Light to carry and holds up to wear and tear. Not like there was a office max around the corner. Plus there is a history of leather maps for the area. As you suspect there could be hidden artifacts the public is not aware of. Perhaps some Tumlinson family heirlooms.
