Funny thing, we were sitting outside our room with a Tnetter I know personally and talking about Tampa Bay treasures and he says "I want meet a guy who's supposed to be here named Gulf Coast Pirate!" I never seen someone look so disappointed in my life when I said that's me!!

Did not win the tournament, but had a great time out there with the navy seals !! About mid-day we blew the Vulcan coupler on one 1350 hp engine.....lots of smoke but no fire.....thank God. We fished the rest of the day on one engine. Now we are delayed from our bahama trip.....I was supposed to leave this morning.

I have never heard of a Vulcan coupler before.
Then I thought a little research was needed.
Now I was really intrigued. It caused smoke?
Must be a little error I looked again for Vulkan coupler. Now I got it sorted.

I believe the Vulcan coupler is much like a harmonic damper, or torque converter....never have been sure about just exactly its purpose, but as a boater this is probably the 4th or 5th time I've burnt one up.....they have a finite amount of time before they fail. Continuous full load hole shots over a long period of time will wear them out. They are a weak link in the power train on these monster high speed diesel engines!!

Inside the metal housing is a composite material.... they used to be made of vulcanized rubber....over the years they have improved performance and durability by using different materials other than vulcanized rubber......this one blew beige colered rubber of some sort all over the engine room .....its a nasty mess. Much nicer than melted black rubber though !!

Apparently nothing is cheap on MTU engines, and I am razing the question of if we should replace both before the other fails ?? Same hours on both parts !! Labor added to that price could get us up around 5000$
