Jowls can be smoked too.
Hocks could probably make a good substitute for cheek. I'm hoping he meant jowl vs actual cheek . I can think of substitutes for cheek, but hey ,lets not divert too far from the recipe. (?)

Yep Guanciale which is salted pork check or jowls.
