The Robert and Sarah Morriss Story

I am still having trouble with all of this about John Morriss. I am going back to look at my research on Thomas Wise Morriss. Strange both dying while Robert Morriss was very young. I simply do not know this John Morriss? Need to do more research. I believe Robert Morriss created the Beale Papers just so everyone would check out his ancestry? John Morriss and Thomas Wise Morriss could be the same person. The middle initial "J" was thrown in to the Beale Papers as being very significant and it could be his father's name was Thomas John Morriss? I have to check it out.

was reading the Chancery file on john morris, and decided to look
into a couple of the other names and came across the below @ RW
i only took snips as its long and the snips are the info we want
in the post, you can see JM knew the Eskridge's,his will was made
in 1786, see under LATER

FYI, George Haydon/Headon/Haydon was married to Jane/Jennie
Morris-this is proven in a land deed in VA. Jane/Jennie was
the daughter of John Morris and Margaret. Margaret died and
John remarried to Nancy"Jane is mentioned in the indenture
between John and Margaret dated 1 5 Nov 1747 in Fairfax CO VA.
The indenture is for three lifetimes. Margaret has died by the
time of John's will, and he is married to Nancy. In that will,
he states that Janes has been given more than a child 's portion.
It is because her name was on the indenture of 1747. "

1755- Dec 17- John Morris is polled for Wm Ellzey (page 338)
in Fairfa x CO
1757 Loudoun County is formed from Fairfax County--borders
changed but John Morris did not move.

1803 John Morris heirs vs. Charles Eskridge, Ex. (grandson of
George Eskridge) (Index to Loudon Co. Chancery Suits 1759-1915,
Hiatt & Scott)

The first suit (or Bill of Complaint) was filed December 1802
by four surviving children of John Morris. These children are as follows:
a.. Susannah married Adam Mitchell on 25 December 1795
b.. Leanor married John Dawson on 25 December 1794
c.. Letty married George Curtis in 1790
d.. Robert

The suit next continues in January 1805. By this time, Charles Eskridge
has died (in 1803) and his executors (sons William and Hector Eskridge)
are named in the suit. By this time, Robert Morris has apparently died
because his name is replaced with "Robert Morris's children".

RM children?
got to take time to read the Chancery file from start to end
pgs ive found so far, where says robert morris/s children, after
his name. pg 14,63,84,86
Virginia Memory: Chancery Records Index - 107-1811-011

im not sure if it is saying list of heirs and RM is last as in
they are all children of deceased or if its, listing heirs and
RMs children as heirs. if its RMs children as heirs they are
minors and not listed by name or their guardian by name, umless
that happens somewhere in the next 100+ pgs

Research is good as always. Thanks.

I do not agree however with the author saying that Robert Morriss must have been deceased by 1803. I have read all of the papers at least two times and the important ones about five times. There is no exclamation mark after Robert Morriss. The next letter "C" of Children is a capital so it is the beginning of another sentence, saying the four were the children and devises of the deceased John Morriss. Other than that I loved all of the research.

NOTE: Robert Morris Sr had two "partners" Elizabeth Murphat (Jr's mother) and Sarah Wise (Oxford, Maryland) , the mother of Thomas Wise Morris.
Thomas Wise Morris, while born in Oxford, Maryland, died in France, 1778, and from the posted genealogy, unmarried and childless...
With the newly posted information by Garry, and the above genealogy of DOI signer Robert Morris Jr, it is obvious that He is NOT related to Robert Morris of Lynchburg or the Robert Morriss character of the Beale Papers.

Good, glad you think so. Myself though I would say again you are wrong.

QUESTION:
Does all this genealogy concerning Robert Morris have any real bearing upon the validity of the story related by the "unknown author" that was copyrighted and published by James Beverly Ward in 1885?
If it had any importance to the tale, this "unknown author" would have included that information in his long description of Robert Morriss- it is also interesting that Robert Morris was Mayor of Lynchburg in 1813 is conspicuous by the absence of mention.

ECS, im hoping all the digging/research turns up a TB with RM

The only existing "paper trail" of Thomas J Beale with Robert Morris is the Beale Papers job print pamphlet of 1885.
That also includes the only "paper trail" of the "unknown author" hearing the story from Robert Morriss and the "unknown author" presenting the finished manuscript of this encounter to James Beverly Ward for copyright and publishing for sale.

I found Roslin today where Robert Morriss died. Will get up that way soon to see if the house is still standing? Now I need to find where they are buried?

Update: I went up to the location where Robert Morriss died in 1863. The house was torn or burned down in 1994. After I check this out I will let everyone know where the house was located. I was hopeing the ironbox may still be there. I will check the ruins to make sure, once I get the landowner's permission.

I can not tell you how it feels to find this information. Almost as good as finding the treasure.

Wouldn't the "unknown author" have taken the iron box along with the ciphers and letters after he interviewed Robert Morriss at the widow Saunders house during the "2nd year of the Confederate War?
No reason for the iron box to still be there.

There is no mention in the Beale Papers of such an occurrence. So I will look if you don't mind.

Searching for the house where Robert Morriss died has led me to the "author" I now know who the author was and guess what that makes the story true. So where now is the treasure?
