Feeling confused as to why Coronavirus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu? Here it is in a nutshell. I hope this helps. Feel free to share this to others who don’t understand...
It has to do with RNA sequencing.... I.e. genetics.
Seasonal flu is an “all human virus”. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each year... you get immunity two ways...through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot.
Novel viruses, come from animals.... the WHO tracks novel viruses in animals, (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1) (birds in the case of the Spanish flu). But once, one of these animal viruses mutates, and starts to transfer from animals to humans... then it’s a problem, Why? Because we have no natural or acquired immunity.. the RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus isn’t human, and the human immune system doesn’t recognize it so, we can’t fight it off.
Now.... sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human, for years it’s only transmission is from an infected animal to a human before it finally mutates so that it can now transfer human to human... once that happens..we have a new contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, thats what decides how contagious, or how deadly it’s gonna be..
H1N1 was deadly....but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the Spanish flu. It’s RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently, too.
Fast forward.
Now, here comes this Coronavirus... it existed in animals only, for nobody knows how long...but one day, at an animal market, in Wuhan China, in December 2019, it mutated and made the jump from animal to people. At first, only animals could give it to a person... But here is the scary part.... in just TWO WEEKS it mutated again and gained the ability to jump from human to human. Scientists call this quick ability, “slippery”
This Coronavirus, not being in any form a “human” virus (whereas we would all have some natural or acquired immunity). Took off like a rocket. And this was because, Humans have no known immunity...doctors have no known medicines for it.
And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus, changed itself in such a way the way that it causes great damage to human lungs..

That’s why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1 or any other type of influenza.... this one is slippery AF. And it’s a lung eater...And, it’s already mutated AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain s, and strain L....which makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine.
We really have no tools in our shed, with this. History has shown that fast and immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics. Philadelphia and Baltimore were reluctant to close events in 1918 and they were the hardest hit in the US during the Spanish Flu.
Factoid: Henry VIII stayed in his room and allowed no one near him, till the Black Plague passed...(honestly...I understand him so much better now). Just like us, he had no tools in his shed, except social isolation...
And let me end by saying....right now it’s hitting older folks harder... but this genome is so slippery...if it mutates again (and it will). Who is to say, what it will do next.
Be smart folks... acting like you’re unafraid is so not sexy right now.
#flattenthecurve. Stay home folks... and share this to those that just are not catching on.

So my mom and I are on our way to the chiropractors office, and we get pulled over by a state trooper. She got a ticket (I wasn't driving, I always do the speed limit) for doing 73 in a 55. She always drives fast. Always. So she goes on an hour long rant blaming everybody on earth for that ticket, and then I opened up my big mouth and said "You know, we've lived here for five years, and you haven't done the speed limit on any road around here once... it was only a matter of time you were going to get knabbed, today was the day".

I'm grounded now. :p

Rusty Rusty Rusty.

I understand you should never take advice from people you don't know. Let alone people you do know.

But Rusty Rusty Rusty , I'm going to repeat this again just this one more time (for today)..

Do NOT lean into a left hook!

And you leaned into that one.

A better answer (it doesn't matter now) might have been , "Drive faster Mom!"

Rusty,

You could always throw your mom a curve.....tell her you're sorry for telling her she was due to get knabbed but you only said it because she had always taught you not to lie.

That'll put her between a rock and a hard place....:laughing7::laughing7::laughing7:

good night. Tomorrow we start a 14 week of going no where. Which i really don't care

I checked on the old foundation site that I have. Lots of animal burrows. I am going to have to throw some firecrackers down them. I did find what appears to be a piece of old window glass . So much tree debris from the tornadoes we had last year. MR WD talked about burning everything right on the spot and getting the area cleaned up. I won't hold my breath. Kinda excited it is going to warm up this week.

Simon,

So did you cut off the wifes credit yet?

No Bill, I have not. I have threatened numerous times over the years but my conscience just would not allow it. I hate what she does and I feel those shopping channels "PREY" on older women. As long as we are financially stable I will complain, but still allow it , ( under protest ).

I hear you GB. It really is good when it does not effect your regular routine isn't it.
You just continue living your life and when it's all over you didn't miss out on anything.

It is addictive. My mother-in-law (in Ohio) and her sister (in California) would watch it at the same time and talk on the phone. They were addicted to the cooking stuff. I have stuff I have no idea how to use. My mom and dad got addicted to the jewelry in the 70's & 80's. My dad keeps telling me how my mom won a contest on there and got $500 worth of jewelry. Now I have an armoire full of cheap arse jewelry that I probably won't wear. I have been wearing the rings though. When the kids were little, we got addicted to watching it and buying toys for Christmas. Such great deals we thought. We just happened to go to Odd Lots and saw the very same hot wheel track set for $5 cheaper. Plus we had to pay shipping. That was it for us. Back then that was a financial blow for us. We stopped watching right then.

Can I give you my wife's cell phone # :laughing7:

I have pointed that out to her numerous times we could get the identical item locally, faster, AND cheaper. :BangHead:
The good side is that she leaves me alone so I can spend my time here :laughing7:

I'm doing another overnight shift tonight. Ive been having a rough time. I got home from my overnight shift this morning and my girlfriend and I had a talk that sounds like were gonna split. I ended up moving out, and havent had time to sleep.

Sorry to hear that. The night shift is NOT for everyone.
