Everybody thinks I'm some kind of professional.....haaa ha !! Im just an islander who has been a top level beachcomber all my life !! I have found everything that any of you can imagine that would wash up from the sea....EVERYTHING !! the metaldetector was a natural progression for any successful beachcomber, and I was using a probe long before the detector. We call it tapping bottles ..... by probing for them in the swampy sand !! To be truthful, I am able to eyeball alot of great finds, and often see them before detecting them. My oldest coin to date 1621....was eyeballed long before my latest detecting success. The image people have of me and the reality is often very different. We all have our techniques and methods....mine are just crude yet effective !! Some people would be shocked hunting with me. I carry almost nothing !! Im very light and mobile !

Gloves for me.
My buried target's approx. center I scratch the spot with a finger tip to mark it , or make a small divot.. (Have tried portable markers too but gave up on that.) Now I have a center to avoid tooling during recovery.
I wear finger tips of gloves out quick that way. But recoveries are faster and more accurate too.
Being on land , there's sometimes enough debris on trashy sites worth gloving over when breaking firm clods of earth.

Sometimes it appears from evidence that the world was held together with wire and rusty nails.
Glass can be worse. Or not ; depending on the day. Gloves only help so much , but they can help.
My work gloves tend to hold thistle spines. Sometimes into winter at snow shoveling time.
Yes they make gloves I won't buy for thistle wrestling. I avoid wearing the worst of thier spines as well as autumn olives spines and it's good.
Like detecting , extra hide /material between me and my next cut or puncture is usually welcomed. Not always a delight. But gloves are going along!
