OMG... sheesh... that IS THE worst case scenario for a ray.... errr THE PERSON i mean.... WElll both !

Anyway... I want a show of hands of who here has ever had the pleasure of being hit by a ray ? ? ?

For those of you who have not... i will just tell you this....
YOU ABSOLUTELY DO NOT EVEN WANT TO BE BRUSHED by a barb.. let alone be in ANY situation such as above.
Put it to you this way.... Simply.

The man who fought and manhandeled EVERY dangerous animal in the world... and had been bitten by many and hurt severly by lots...

DIED from being hit by a ray.

RIP Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin.

I have been hit on the side of my right foot.. BARELY a slice to my foot less than an inch long and not deep.
I thought i was going to die... I had a reaction and couldn't breath and was in massive pain.

Also.... the pain and tenderness of it was there for a loooooooonggg time after I walked with a slight favored limp for about a month.
When i tell you that you do not want to get hit i mean it.

Shuffle your feet when in water... OR wear shoes... and react fast when you feel the ground /sand move below your foot.

They are no joke.

Listen... if you ever get hit... seek medical immediately.

Also... IF you get the barb IN YOU... this is worse.... and do not even think about attempt to remove.
Poison dumps and the bacteria is off the charts,
It must be removed through surgery only.

People take rays as a joke and for granted.
Until you get hit.

A Vietnamese refugee who lived with us said his mother whipped him with a ray tail.
Seemed foreign to me , not having ray tails common in the midwest. Or that ambitiously harsh a mother.

Its not the tail... its whats UNDER the rays ass end / tail you gotta worry about... the barb... and only the barb.

Ray skin is WAY tougher than leather or anything for that matter.

It is what is used on the handles of samurai swords... contrary to what you hear about it being shark... it's not.... its ray.

I knew a guy who got a barb embedded in his heal...

He walks with a cane to this day.
I pulled this out of my achilles tendon right above my right heal. Probably around 1986 or so night fishing on the north jetty at Sebastian Inlet. Some idiot landed a big stingray and just left it on the jetty. I was walking backward fighting a massive redfish & trying to get down to the beach to land it. Stepped right on the big ray & paid the price. It felt like someone was using a blowtorch on the back of my leg.
