Got A Rock you Want Identified? Post it here! gimme a good picture or 3 or 4!

I live in northern California near Mount Diablo, here is the best close up shots I could get.
Thanks for the help I just want to know if its junk or not, I think it looks cool.
Hmm, that could be Obsidian after all but as far as I know it is rare to see such a large piece. I was researching how to tell between the two and found this that may be of interest. http://www.ebay.com/gds/Obsidian-Gem-Types-/10000000001180577/g.html Maybe someone can chime in to give an additional opinion. Also some slag is sought after and actually very cool looking. Just because it is slag doesn't mean it is bad. All that matters is that you think it is cool or worth keeping.

To me it looks like Bornite. This would explain the copper mineralization found nearby and the purple color as well as iridescence. It could also be another copper sulfide coating like Covellite but without additional closer pictures, I cannot be sure. I am not sure of the matrix rock either but I am thinking it is something like an iron stained microcrystalline quartz. There is some banding near the middle toward the bottom which make it seem BIF like or Agate like. The blue greenish color you are mentioning and this copper sulfides seemingly in this specimen are leading me to believe you were seeing Malachite and Azurite in other pieces of rock nearby.
Thank you so much! I looked up Bornite and the pictures look extremely similar to the ore samples I picked up. It's a gorgeous mineral! Thank you so much for your time!

Thanks for this post! I have lurked for a long time and love this site. I took my detector (mxt pro) to a tailing pile outside a mine in an area that most likely hasn't been touched since 1900. My detect jumped all over this rock (10% iron prob) so I took it home and busted it open. I assume the shiny stuff is pyrite mixed with iron? My pinpointer didn't hit on that stuff but went crazy on the blueish rock. I have no experience prospecting or IDing rocks so any help is appreciated. The site is near folsom lake and a former gold/chromium mine.

OK, so I am finding quite a bit of this (rock?) now and found it to be soluable in HCl. In sample 1 there is some left over material that looks like purified white silica or quartz that itself crushes easily when compressed. In sample 2 there is very little of the white crystalline byproduct although more colored grains of various (sands?).

Also I am intrigued by what came out of the stone, and I am providing a pic of that too. It appears to be tiny perfectly rounded beads (no flakes or crystals) of silver and gold, (and maybe PGMs?). Testing a small solution with SnCl showed definite gold, and I am soon to test the silver colored beads to look for AgCl in the end, but still I have no clue as to the rock. Could it be a form of dolostone? The crystalline structure is VERY fine, there are veins of calcium carbonate, and it is littered with dark specks.
There are different samples, but they break up semi easily into sharp shards for the most part.

Please help.

Also: thumbnail pic below is of sample 2 in HCl taken from below flask. I don't know why it appears down at the bottom as a thumbnail and I don't know how to put it with the rest or even delete it for that matter. Again, thanks for your help identifying these ore samples.

Quartz?

Found this neat rock, has tiny perfect crystals inside, my hands tingle like crazy after i hold it for more than 10 secs.

In that case, I wouldn't reccomend holding it without gloves. It is not quartz, it appears to be some type of chemical substance that was poured out on the ground many years ago and left to solidify. Frankly, I would put in in a non-metalic container (sealed) and take it to a chemist to be analyzed. Who knows, there could be a lot more of it lying around the area where you found it.

So I busted open a fat block of quartz, and found some type of very silvery, almost looks like silver melted and cooled very blobby looking. Found in forresthill area. Not platinum right? Silver? Lead or something?

Really hard to tell from those pictures. I'd try pointing a flashlight at the silver spot and taking a picture or try taking a picture outside during the day.

Maybe these will help. Sorry for the bad pics. And thank you for the input!

Better. In the first two pictures it looks like mica or something like mica. In the last it just looks like shiny quartz. I'm sure it's just from the angle or flash. I'd say it's mica.

You could try the mica poke test with a needle or sharp knife. Poke it and it should break apart. (Just the shiny part)

Hello everyone this is my first post, I'm pretty sure I got the right place.

I found this rock at a hard rock mine in the mojave desert that has been operating since 1970.
All entrances are sealed tight with bulletproof metal doors however there was a sighn that said they are still operating and plenty of Sighns of activity around, though no people.

I was respectful of there property and belongings however this caught my eye on the way out just laying in the road, any info would be much appreciated.
