Meteorite fragment? You may wish to have it sectioned and acid washed...

Thanks SheldonJ. Where would one have this done and what type of acid? He was thinking of having a corner cut off so it could be mounted on a stand. At 21 pounds it is surprisingly heavy.

any rock shops in the area? they could point you in the right direction.

Does anyone have a clue what I have here, I was playing around in a pegmatite vein an this little guy popped out, its very light pink translucent it kinda has the structure of a morganite but not to sure any ideals WP_20140214_002.jpgWP_20140214_010.jpgWP_20140214_018.jpgWP_20140214_012.jpg

Heavy Hunk of Rock

A friend asked me to find out what I could about this specimen.
It weighs 21 pounds.
It displaces 6 cups of water in a bucket.
Dimensions are roughly 7" x 6' x 4 1/2".
It is magnetic but more so on the end that looks volcanic.
It came in a load of rock from the California Sierras.

Any ideas?
thanks-

Break it open with a hammer so we can see a fresh surface. Use eye protection.
Strongly magnetic?

Okay, Mr Lee and I have discussed these two specimens. Let's see what you guys think. The first 5 pictures are crystalized quartz, mostly. What else is in there? The next 7 are of a rock found really close to the first. It wasn't pretty, the material looked comparable so I broke it up. What do you guys see? The specimens were found in Hart County, GA, on my property.

I see quartz crystals and pieces (?) of country rock.

I am going to suggest chalcopyrite, it looks like sulphides to me. Chalcopyrite can indent slightly when poked with a knife.
Do a streak test, rub against an unglazed piece or porcelain.

Your second set of pictures look like more copper-related minerals, like bornite for example. Some have a coating making it difficult to guess better then that..

Lead ore with silver in it... would be my guess... been finding alot of it my self in Cerillos nm

Ah yes, Cerillos. Last time I was there in those hills on a horse I looked down and there was a piece of turquoise the size of a quarter. Amazing place.

I can't seem to get any answers perhaps you can help me ID this IMG_9489.jpgIMG_9492.jpg

broke open the breccia rock that had the reddish cap on the top and what looked like a reddish gold vein running through it. And when to broke it in half the vein is shiny and runs through the whole inside. What do u think

I still think there are some copper minerals in there. But I could be wrong, if you want to tell gold from sulphides your better off doing that yourself. :)

I found these in a little creek in BC Canada. I am told that the rough (stained) ones are granite. With the magnifying glass, the black parts almost look like tiny crystals? There's lot's of micro sparkly's that I believe and am told is Mica, does Mica sparkle in silver? The rust is just rust I guess?
The little smooth ones have a sort of grain to them, I made them wet hoping it would be easier to see. I'm told they are Gneiss? Nothing about the grain or rings though. I think I'm going to get a claim where I found them.
I like my rocks...lol.

Chrisenim, if it is translucent, I doubt it's the copper minerals but rather the quartz you are looking at?

Wishbone,
Your first 4 pictures do resemble a granitoid. The others look like river rock, perhaps I see some quartz in there. The others I'm not sure.
