Weight is 22.4 lbs
Hardness is 6-7 (took effort to scratch with a file)

I found this rock with my gold bug. When I broke it up with a hammer it appears to be iron pyrite, but what I have read on iron pyrite it will not register up to a 40 on the metal detector like most of this one does (some of the pieces only hit around 10). I soaked a piece in muriatic acid for 2 weeks and have attached these photos as well. I'm new to detecting, prospecting, and to the site. Is this gold, or will it eventually dissolve with the rest of the pyrite?

Hi G. Freeman,
You are right it is mica. I am still looking for some gold though!

Garrett ace 350 it rings up as Nickle and Iron both 'jumps back n forth', positive pull on the string magnet test as it wont stick directly on it , Has a Crust and looks like some flow marks here and their , Sparkles like crazy , almost like a hard Orange or rusty colored clay or Stone, it was about 6-8 inch's down . Any thought's on this ? the pics dont do it much justice Looks A Lot better in Person... Thanks for Your advice 'Help' I posted a post in this thread a few days ago under Stoney Meteorite ,them pics are from My cell phone I took when I got Home, So if anyone wants to wast there time Un Gluing the photo info ...

This showed up and jumped from Nickel to Iron on My Garrett Ace 350 , appears to have a Crust , magnet on a string will pull it but not stick right on it ,what looks like some Flow marks are on it but small , I filed a small spot on the one end and looks to be rust/orange color and has lots of Sparkle. Thanks for Your input...Also posted here a few days ago with cell phone pics marked 'Stoney Meteorite'

I got a text from Dustedyou today. He is out of action with a lot of pain in his neck. Drop him a line and wish him well!

O.K. thanx for the info... I know the feeling as well ... I have a fake right leg and a bad back :P

Been having a time trying to figure out exactly what this rock is. I think I know that the crystals are quartz but not sure about the base rock. I have been finding a lot of this at a secluded beach. Also attached is a picture of the same type of rock but it has a weird metallic coating on it that smells like sulpher. These rocks with a metallic coating are near the mouth of a beach cave near a military base... Another picture I have included is a cliff face that might be the birthplace of all of these rocks I am finding. There are also large slabs of it in the ocean that can be seen at extraordinarily low tides with veins of quartz everywhere. Thanks for any help (Don't know why this post looks messed up...) 1.jpg1a.JPG2.jpg3.jpg4.jpg5.jpg

Wishbone,
I got the opposite problem! I can't go anywhere without finding rocks! :headbang:

DanB72,
Uncertain. Is the whole piece glassy? Was there any kind of metal production in the area?
It has a resemblence of slag. But I'm not to sure.

mikeluedecke,
Rub your piece on a unglazed piece of porcelain - does it appear blackish?
Also try scratching it with a knife - if it doesn't scratch those two tests suggest pyrite.

Also check magnetism.
Your white to greyish stones are quartz.

diggum,
You got a slab with a mixture of things.
The green stuff is malachite most likely - a secondary copper mineral. The round "balls" might be garnet.

Sher,
Might be topaz or else what. Do a hardness test with quartz. Do you see any cleavage? Or "bubbles"?

gman,
It is likely its just "a rock" with some magnetite in it. Magnetite is magnetic and would explain the reaction.

Dironot,
Look at the upper parts of your 1a picture. There is a black layer, the origin?
Either way, try scratching it with a knife. Also rubb it against a piece of unglazed porcelian.
I'm thinking it might be chalcedony, but want to be sure.

I've got some new San Gabriel River rocks to show you guys...Found a vein while busting rocks...Carried the whole 40 lbs thing a mile back to my car...
