Got A Rock you Want Identified? Post it here! gimme a good picture or 3 or 4!

I found this in the ground in the back of a shed. I was wondering if you knew what it was. Quartz? Marble? stone? it is very smooth. The lines are slightly off centered so it is kind of interesting.View attachment 906980View attachment 906981View attachment 906982View attachment 906983View attachment 906984

Quartz and Moonstone, they do this with Inlay also the "Egg" is usually cut into an egg and polished after they bond the pieces together.

Hi Dusted. Glad o see you are back. Hope everything is going well for you. A rock with closeups. Was wondering what the white, and dark minerals are and also the yellow brown veiny mineral is. Iron? Thanks

ok so its been "Rotted" by water flow or exposure but im seeing Pyrite, Iron Pyrite (Veiny issue is the iron is left over when the pyrite rusts out), Lead ( AKA Galena), and Silver... there might be a Gold value but it will be small.. the silver on the other hand.. not bad!

Hi Dusted...Found an abandoned bismuth/silver mine and I think I found at least bismuth? does the silver run with the bismuth? or could it be galena?? not sure, Thanks in Advance!!Your the man!!View attachment 910752View attachment 910753View attachment 910754View attachment 910755View attachment 910756View attachment 910757View attachment 910758View attachment 910759View attachment 910760

Sweet! Ok so Silver and Lead run together like Bipolar and ADD..lol i am seein the Bismouth Iron and Turquoise/ Peacocking with pyrite inclusions.. Calco pyrite.. From the look of the silver it does have some lead in it.. but not much.. save some of the best examples for you (and cut em with a tile saw!) and Grind/crush/ pan the junk and see what kind of values you get!

Dustedyou I found this rock next to the quartz vein I been working, been wanting to show it to you to get your input. Is this fluorite in it ? It sparkles all over. Front ,back sides top and in one picture can see the back in the mirror behind it.View attachment 903975View attachment 903976View attachment 903977 This rock probably weighs 20 pounds. Since I posted this rock I have ruled out Fluorite Dustedyou because can't scratch it with a knife, maybe it's olivine as there is a lot of Magnesium and iron where I found it and the sparkles in is is more sparkle than quartz. Thanks.

Humm could be .. with Fluorite it Fluoresces so find a Dark Lamp (aka a purple lightbulb) turn off the lights in the room and shine the rock ... if it glows you probably have flourite.. if not its a nice piece of Quartz. I would sooo be cleaning it up either way.... lol there is some crystaline structure there screaming fluorite to me!

This piece has better clarity looks crushed to huh. Could this other one be Lamploite or Kimberlite theres several small gems in it there clear lookin though you cant see them vary well here.View attachment 904030View attachment 904031

Kimberlite and Lampolite are ushually much Darker and Bubbling with Crystaline Structure dark brown to Black.. ( I recently went on a hunt and found a good Kimberlite field.. but no diamonds 8(

The Second Picture has got me tho.. it is mostly Calcite Quartz but that upper looks like Oliveine or Peridote, a good cleaning with tooth paste and a tooth brush are in order! then repost you got something there!

Dang! Sweet! Im stoked! These pieces were just hanging near the surface in the old Tailings(?) piles..Cant wait to go back and do some more investigation....Thanks for your help! I need to do Way more research for my own understanding(geology/processing/assay?). If I was to cut a sample should I cut perpendicular/parallel to the vein? or does it matter? this is all new to me and they all look awesome...Thanks Again, your time is greatly appreciated! HH

Now we just need a member with the name Incontinentia Buttocks. :-D Love the Python based user name!

Ahhh Maximus Erectatus .... Life O brian time... as for the cut with a cheapy tile saw (Harbor freight),, as for the cut .. pick a break or an eclusion.. deep fracture.. etc etc...

Haha..Thanks for the name love! Im going to attempt to cut the larger chunk in half this weekend with a tile saw...Unfortunetly we got a fair amount of ice/snow over the past few days, so me getting back to the site is gonna be tough..Once I do go back I plan on doing a better scouring job of the old diggings piles and pits..gotta do some serious raking, about 200 years of leaf buildup everywhere..Hopefully gather some more chucks the old timers missed...I crushed/panned some of the chips and it looks that there is a good amount of fine silver!...Super excited! Need to upgrade rock crusher/classifiers..I guess from here its see what I can find on the ground, then maybe crack into the bedrock further (impact hammer drill/rock bit?)and see what else is going on in there..Still have some questions about the assay process and if its possible to do yourself??Or pan out all the heavy metals and bring somewheres??....Hopeully ill have some more good news and pictures soon..Thanks again Dusted!!HH

any time m8! and may you find a Blanket of gold in the rubble.!! Also go in with good lighting.. the old timers had crap lighting.. there you are !

Skarn?

Came upon this here in So Cal I believe its Skarn doesnt it usualy change colors as it goes outward darker green to brown so werers the rest of it. Skarns are usually associated with Coal.. but in Ore digging you want a Very definitive separation. aka:skarnhand.jpg so in this case i would not call it a skarn... good iron ore in it tho.. look for some hematite and quartz in the area

Looking for some help and figured this thread would be good place to start. I'm in North GA near an old placer mine. First photo shows a quartz vein about 2"-4" thick. The other photos show the mineralization around it. Any insight would be most appreciated.
