Got A Rock you Want Identified? Post it here! gimme a good picture or 3 or 4!

Thanks Dustedyou. Have dug this hole in a bank so far I have to lay down to reach any more quartz in this vein and I am afraid the roof will fall in on me but I can still see quartz in the end of this hole but not clear quartz anymore. Has turned to white rock with a lot of black in it. Still got quartz in it too. Thanks for the info.Just using a screwdriver and a hammer and shovel io get this far so I need all the luck and information I can get.

take a look at Shoring And Strutting. Continued
or http://books.google.com/booksid=UDi...#v=onepage&q=mine shaft shoring guide&f=false

your gonna want to go big in diameter (close shafts are hard to work in and hard to shore properly.. there are a ton of books for free on google read up on it and ask some of the old timers (terryc or goldtramp.. theyll point you in the right direction there.. you want to be safe when going in so do it right and youll be much better off... PS post me a pict of the White rock with black in it.?

looks like a lava stalactite.. common in lava where it "Flows" and pools rather than just being thrown around.. Hawaii has tons like this in dead Lava tubes. they cool slow enough to gain some crystal growth, and in parts of south america they can get vehicle sized and are full of amethyst and gold/copper/silver, and when cut open are gorgeous. At first i though i had seen this "rock" on an episode of Oddities used as a mummy phalace but ... i still proceeded to look... lol There is a possibility that it could be a coprolite AKA Dino poop. coprolite.jpg

I know what it is, but just want to try and stump you. Technically I shouldn't be handling it too much. It did take me about a month to identify, and only after I sent a piece to a guy with access to an Electron Microscope did it get confirmed..

well here goes:

Tremolite is a member of the amphibole group of silicate minerals with composition: Ca2Mg5Si8O22(OH)2. Tremolite forms by metamorphism of sediments rich in dolomite and quartz. Tremolite forms a series with actinolite and ferro-actinolite. Pure magnesium tremolite is creamy white, but the color grades to dark green with increasing iron content. It has a hardness on Mohs scale of 5 to 6. Nephrite, one of the two minerals of the gemstone jade, is a green variety of tremolite.
The fibrous form of tremolite is one of the six recognised types of asbestos. This material is toxic and inhaling the fibers can lead to asbestosis, lung cancer and both pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma. Fibrous tremolite is sometimes found as a contaminant in vermiculite, chrysotile (itself a type of asbestos) and talc.

so you have a Acicular Tremolite (Atype of Asbestos) with Gypsum seeding (aka its sloughed into the expanse of the crystals and filled the gaps after it formed. Typical for Gypsum because it will flow with water anywhere and begin to calcify as it dries.), and a very nice specimen! some others.. tremolite.jpgTremolite2.jpg thats my best guess! due to its color there are litterally 1000's of combinations for it to be.. might have stumped me!

Went out today and loaded up some more goodies.

OK, I'm new to this and my wife got a rock saw and tumbler so I am trying to look for rocks for her also. See if my guess are even close.
1st pic, my guess is limestone, but has a crystalline structure so might be a kind of quartz. Dont think this will polish.
DSCN0160.JPG
2nd pic my guess is quartz from a vien, is this what I look for to find gold? Should polish nicely
DSCN0161.JPG
3rd pic Not sure if it is quartz or limestone, but has iron pyrite, and could it be a little gold?
DSCN0163.JPG
4th pic I think this is classic hematite, should polish up nicely.
DSCN0164.JPG
5th pic I think this may be a kind of hematite, but it has a definite grain structure (see the top). Also looks like some pyrite.
DSCN0165.JPG
6th pic Definitely shiny and crumbly in layers.. I think this is all iron pyrite, but has no gold coloring.

Hi Dustedyou - please can you identify this for me?

I found it near a stream where the is a lot of quartz. It is heavier than a normal rock of its size and scratches red. I have put a magnet from a stereo to it and it doesnt stick to it, if anything there is a very very faint repellent.

Any ideas?

Petrified sea shell (Clam) nice one.. they sell some glue online (i forget where) that will help with the removal of the rock derbris, and to make you shell shine. look for dinosaur bone glue. comes with a tutorial.! nice!!

Solved..........Thank You !!

Be careful with that asbestos! My dad died of Mesothelioma. It takes about 20-30 years to come down with the cancer after being exposed. Some people are exposed once and get it, some people are exposed many many times over the years and never get it. You just never know. There is no safe level of exposure.

First time hardrock newbie here. I was out looking at a new area and collected some sample rocks to take home, crush and hopefully find some gold (or silver although I'm not quite sure how to get the silver out). Although there are multiples of each kind laying about, I figured I would mix it up with different looking rocks since it was my first time in this spot, and if I find gold in one, that will give me a better idea what type of rocks to look for. Here are some pics. A few of the pics are of the same rocks at different angles. The rock I am most curious about is the first one that is bluish with quarts veins circling it. I put my boot there so you could see the size. The rest of the rocks are a little bigger than a clenched fist except for the last pic of multiple rocks, those are a bit smaller. All of the shots of rocks on the paper plate were taken using flash.

Pictures #3, 4, and 5 are the same rock at different angles
Pictures #6, 7, and 8 are the same rock at different angles
Pictures #11 and 12 are the same rock at different angles
