Got A Rock you Want Identified? Post it here! gimme a good picture or 3 or 4!

hi there dusted,

a friend of mine gave me this rock...

what do you think it is?

thanks in advance

M8 its some very nice mica sheets! in Quartz.. The mica group of sheet silicate (phyllosilicate) minerals includes several closely related materials having close to perfect basal cleavage. All are monoclinic, with a tendency towards pseudohexagonal crystals, and are similar in chemical composition. The nearly perfect cleavage, which is the most prominent characteristic of mica, is explained by the hexagonal sheet-like arrangement of its atoms.
The word "mica" is derived from the Latin word mica, meaning "a crumb", and probably influenced by micare, "to glitter".[1]

Ive seen mica sheets used as window panes in peru.. but still very pretty rock!

m8 i posted a reply on page 18 there basically old tractor parts.. rusted but still fun. I've spent whole days trying to find the rest in hopes of putting it together, but just found more Cast iron!

Hey Dusted I read you sayin with pics you could point in the direction of were the gold might be? Im in Southern California heres some quartz vains I found. But I havent found the mineralized quartz part with the gold yet there is a lot of pyrite in some of that white and rose stuff though can you give me an idea of were and maybe how deep? Maybe ill get lucky and nobody else has found it before me. lol. TView attachment 857589View attachment 857590View attachment 857591View attachment 857592hank you.

nice! as Iron cools faster than gold the pyrite will form lower in the seam or at the edges, alot of gold is also found in the pyrite peacock.. your gold will be in those nice Vertical veins of quartz, I would look (figure 4 ) at the base of the hill where the veins start, (mainly because its had less wear and tear, It has had less exposure, it had more time to cool (and pool)), look for Talc, and Red Iron in a vein. allways follow a pyrite vein especially if its widening look for silver oxide (itll be black in the veins) its also a good indicator.and dig down to get rid of the bull quartz,, It will throw you off and I have seen the elements drain quartz of any mineralization for a foot or more. Lastly take a jewelers loop with you and look for tiny specks of gold in the quartz this occures when the quartz cooled so fast the gold had no time to glue itself together and pool, yielding gold at 2oz a ton.
That being said i love the path of quartz and would be on it with a pickaxe and a teen in a half a minute..lol GL and may you find your weight in GOLD!

Hi all!
I still have some trouble identifying this rock.
All the pics are from the same piece of rock.
THANK ALL !View attachment 857403View attachment 857404View attachment 857405View attachment 857406View attachment 857407View attachment 857408

you have a sulfide, on top of a quartz vein i would so crush up! lol that being said the type of sulfide can very greatly but based on the color and experience i would say its Valleriite, which is a copper sulfide mixed with pyrite and other minerals Sulfide minerals - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia But the Quartz under it is full of Iron and Silver oxide some hematite .. its positively yummy, and that might have some yield. hit that vein up for sommore (i know pun gods will strike me down) ROCK!

Hey Dustedyou, I drove by this a couple of times. The otherday I stoped and Wow (it looked like cheddar) a lot better than I thought It is mostly Quartz from what Im seeing I grabbed some for A sample but of course I didnt find any gold grrr.. I dont know if the pics are good enough but could you tell me what these rocks areView attachment 858180 and maybe why im not finding any gold Im a noob so my panning skills arent all that great any info would do wonders. Thank You.

youve got a nice quartz/granite upwell there it has good mineralization.. I would look much closer at the rocks in the center (all red) there full of Iron and might hold a nice surprise,, shoot me some of the rocks you take from this area,OO and be careful (sleeping drivers keep hitting cars pulled off the road, and research the laws in your state to see if they forbid the taking of rock from the side of the road.. my state does 8(.. but it hasnt allways stopped me ! gl and let me know what you find!

Cracking rocks on the hillside and these are a few. Some of them [mainly the ones with black] smell of sulfur when broken. The first pic was found on a pegmatite mine dump. Thanks in advance Dusted

NICE ROCK! ok so im seeing lead silver Iron and some possible shiny (cant tell if its pyrite or gold.) Very naice! Grind this rock to paste and pan it OUT! lol NICE FIND!

Hello Dustedyou I managed to get onto that hill with the big bull quartz vains today only for about a half hour then it got dark. I knocked out some pieces straight from the bigger one and in a couple of areas on it I found some strange lookin pyrite it looked like someone burnt it with a soldering gun or something lol, As you can see in the picture i also found some pieces scattered around that looked good but I dont know it doesnt really look like quartz should I P8290400.JPGP9040597.JPGP9040603.JPG bother crushing it? could it still have gold?

Thank You and I'm sorry that it took me awhile to reply. No its not a museum piece I own it. You said that the papers were confirming the closest time when it was formed, what time would that be? Also what is a Knapper? I'm sorry that I'm so stupid on this and I appreciate all your time and info. Thanks Jody

WOW ok so I've seen the rock in the first several picts.. its a quartz that melded with a copperitic schist Heavy mineralization alot of sulfides Sulfide minerals - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia these will yield a little gold (as many sulfides will) but will be alot of work.lol (I have scorned many a ton of this rock) you want to find "Peacocking" in this alot of Pyrite is a good place to start, then look for other mineralizations like crysacolla, or turquoise..etc etc.. there will be a line of gold in this but you have to find the origination.

ok that being said #10 is sweet its Quartz with a heavy iron mineralization, I would probably just clean this one up. #11 12,13 I would crush to paste and pan out, the red Quartz in #14 is pretty and probably not going to yield any gold but cleaned it might make a very nice piece on a coffee table. and the last one has good mineralization Grind it to paste and pan this bunch up! ... Shoot me a Picture of the area your in (wide view) and Ill point you in the right direction! GL and may you be blessed with GOLD!

Thanks a million Dusted! I always find your comments on peoples rocks fascinating! The area I found these rocks has all kinds of interesting rocks. Lots of rusty Quartz everywhere. I found a really nice looking rock that had lots of metallic green (copper I assume) and silvery areas but unfortunately I misplaced it on the mountain.

Thank you for your opinion on which rocks are worth crushing and which are better kept whole. I hear you on how some rocks are soo much work to crush! ( mortar and pestle) LOL The area I found these in does not have a gold mining history but IMHO, there are lots of interesting rocks to make me want to investigate the area more.

I don't have any wide angle shots but I will try and get some next time I'm there. Here are a few closer shots of what I thought were possible areas I might find gold. Please let me know if any of these areas are worth digging into a bit! I also have a detector I wanted to bring to this location, anything worth detecting here?

Picture 2 and 3 are of the same area and seemed quite interesting to me as the strip of rocks going from the ground up seems to turn to the right. I was thinking may some extra pressures may have been exerted in this area?

Thanks

Found this old vertical shaft it has one vain in the deepest part of it. It isnt quartz it has lots of talc on it the stone is a light green color I sampled some of it, Ran it through the blue bowl...and nothing. why did they work so hard for it do you think.P9100717.JPGP9100718.JPGP9100726.JPGP9100727.JPGP9100729.JPGP9100732.JPGP9100734.JPG

It might have just been a prospect. My guess is they were looking for an ancient river channel.

its a quartzite but mixed heavily with mica.. and a ton of iron.. the first rock (altho blury) looks like it may have silver oxide, and the next 2 look too shisty to really say whether or not to crush em.. I probably wouldn't but hey if you got time why not? lol

a Knapper is a knife (hatchet or arrowhead) maker in Flint, or obsidian. arrowhead and knife blades are still made even today and some surgeons actually use obsidian blades in surgery because they are sharper than stainless steel . and don't dull. I do believe it was formed and knapped around 420BC but that is from memory of the papers you posted, and i might be wrong..lol and no question is stupid.. your just fine! ask and the worst someone else can tell you is oops i dunno!..lol

I wouldnt bother with any (of the others..kinda bland) but #2 and #3 the vertical vein of quartz is sweet.. dig in there and see if you get any color! nice hunting tho!post some more when you get some of that vein!

Dusted,
This is confusing us. It does have free gold though

OK so picture #1 has a nice vein of Silver Oxide in it (the blackened vein in the quartz/iron backdrop).. that should yield some free gold,, I would dig in there further.. the vein in #2 Very naice good Iron content, and I like the black one next to it. I would tear apart the veins starting with the dark black one on the right.. then move over to the left.. and below them I would estimate that it might join below. kind of a tributary set of veins. the black your getting is most likely silver oxide mixed with Iron in the veins.. not bad and good color to chase down.Very Nice jump start!

Talc and Iron ushually lead to a nice Gold deposit the copper (green) would spur on a spat of digging .. then squat.. lol Ive seen huge holes they (old timers and know nothings) that were dug because they found a little color..careful .. and look closely ate where Red and Talc meet in a vein there will be gold if even its micro fine.

Hey Dusted, tracked down an old mine where supposedly there was silver and gold....there are 2 spots where I believed the old timer's where pulling rock out..the first spot is a pit that either collapsed or was filled in...no MD signals from this area which is the lowest in elevation out of the 2 areas

The second area seems more
promising, fair amount of red/black/quartz...

Got some faint signals with the MD bouncy 30-50 range...so I chunked off some of the rock...mostly from the backside of the arch q...here are some of the chunks.....

Crushed some whence home and found no gold/silver that I can pan anyway...wondering if I'm getting hotter or if I should concentrate in a particular area/ see if I can find/ chase the vain if possible... Anyway thanks for taking a look and for the past/future help. Could you suggest a good book on the geology of gold...Thanks!
