I don't even know where to begin! My buddy Phil and I got back onto the field where I've been hunting for the past month. It's a generational site and today certainly proved that! We started in a new area and Phil almost immediately found a piece to a sword guard. A couple minutes later he found another part of the guard. I commented to him that there is probably more and that I was going to find the pommel...and sure enough 3 feet from the other pieces I found the pommel! I am very pleased with that as it's a relic I've always wanted to find!

We decide to fan out looking for more and a couple minutes later I have old silver in the hole! It's a 1676 French 4 Sol! This is actually the second 1676 4 Sol I've found.

Found a lot of lead including a couple ingots and hogue cylindrical piece. Think they were making buttons at this site.

Near the end of the day we start making our way back to the car and within 30 feet I get a nice high silver tone. I pop the plug and there it is...big American silver! This is extremely rare in my area (Nova Scotia) and I could not believe the date! Amazing condition as well!!!

Truth of the matter is that I would love to see an 1809 half on the banner.... so I voted. :)

So where does this rate? What is your top 3 now?

Coin find...all time favorite! I say that because it's a coin that I would never have expected to find at my sites nor am I likely to find anything similar. The 8 reales and cobs and French silvers are great but there's a VERY good chance that I will find several more of those as the years go by. So, top 3 coins are as follows:

3. 1674 1 Reale Cob
2. 1774 8 Reale
1. 1809 Capped Bust Half

Thanks for the vote. To tell you the truth I didn't think that this was a potential banner find...shows how little I know about this type of coinage. I've learned a lot since yeasterday afternoon! :icon_thumleft:

I think I got the variety for the Half Dollar, attaching a photo with the one I think matches, I do not have a book, just compared the photos from the website I sent you and at minimum it is close and I hope in this case close enough is good enough! :) Overton 111. If it is the O-111, the auction site had it as a Rarity 4! Very Scarce

Congs. terrific coin! Banner for sure. Great condition...

As for the verity - Don,

Not an expert on Overton varieties, but the '8' doesn't seem to be as round and the star on left bottom seems to close to the dentils on the rim.

Congratulations on an amazing hunt and recovering a rare early US silver coin in outstanding condition. I'll be voting banner on this find. For that matter, I am surprised it isn't up there already. I'll never understand what motivates people to vote banner on some things and not on others.

It is very possible there is another Obverse that goes with the Reverse, I did not look as close at the Obv as I did the Reverse, I do think the Reverse is correct, if another die went with that Reverse, then probably is another. I do not have any books stating which Obv goes with which Rev. Reason I said think it is an O-111. :)

Your on a dream site. Keep killing it... Art

It's difficult when you don't know the rules to the game. And if all pics are not high resolution, and if you don't take the time to rotate each one to the same position.

Can't argue with that logic. What's funny is you probably have a much better chance of finding something that's very rare in the books than finding another big early American silver that looks that good. Heck it was probably like that even before you dug it!

Romeo,

It deserves banner in my books both for condition and the rarity factor in your area also throw in the fact that was serious money back in the day regardless of where found.

Regards + HH
