I don't even know where to begin! My buddy Phil and I got back onto the field where I've been hunting for the past month. It's a generational site and today certainly proved that! We started in a new area and Phil almost immediately found a piece to a sword guard. A couple minutes later he found another part of the guard. I commented to him that there is probably more and that I was going to find the pommel...and sure enough 3 feet from the other pieces I found the pommel! I am very pleased with that as it's a relic I've always wanted to find!

We decide to fan out looking for more and a couple minutes later I have old silver in the hole! It's a 1676 French 4 Sol! This is actually the second 1676 4 Sol I've found.

Found a lot of lead including a couple ingots and hogue cylindrical piece. Think they were making buttons at this site.

Near the end of the day we start making our way back to the car and within 30 feet I get a nice high silver tone. I pop the plug and there it is...big American silver! This is extremely rare in my area (Nova Scotia) and I could not believe the date! Amazing condition as well!!!

Coin find...all time favorite! I say that because it's a coin that I would never have expected to find at my sites nor am I likely to find anything similar. The 8 reales and cobs and French silvers are great but there's a VERY good chance that I will find several more of those as the years go by. So, top 3 coins are as follows:

3. 1674 1 Reale Cob
2. 1774 8 Reale
1. 1809 Capped Bust Half

I can certainly understantd your logic for the order of preference.
But, I got to add my 2 cents, and say in my (if you don't mind) opinion.

#1,you never know what your going to find next. And that is what we love about the hobby.
#2, as for a a big "8" and you having found not only one, but two of them...maybe thinking they are too easy... I'm quite sure most of us have found none. (not counting the guy who got a cache of them) 8 reales are a rare find. An easy banner In my estimation.

In fact take away the half dollar and you still have a fantastic find, french silver is by no means a common find, and 1600's to boot.

Anyway starting to ramble. sorry.
Awesome find. LARGE, High Grade, Old Silver...Congrats

Congrats BIG time on the BANNER. An early High grade US Silver half surely deserves it. I imaging any seated half dollar in that condition would have made it, so a capped find in that condition (conservatively, and easily a good EF) is a banner find

Just not sure I'd know what to expect next, and that is what I like about this hobby.

Good Luck Out There, and Unexpectations.....

Rick,

Well said.....I've seen some killer finds posted over the years and either of those 2 coins fits the bill.

That said the half in that condition takes the nod IMHO.

Regards + HH

Don't get me wrong, I know that 8 Reale's are a hard find but I'll bet you I find a 3rd before I find another early American large silver...and I'm really looking forward to the "Threepeat" post.:headbang: You're right though...you never know what will pop up...I may get back on that field and find a dozen early American silvers that were all lost at the same time...here's hoping!

Congratulations on your Banner & thanks for showing us the beautiful coin - coins and the rest of the cool relics you found
on your awesome hunt.

It just occurred to me that the 3rd coin I found on this hunt was a Geo II copper which means in one hunt I found a coin from the 1600s, 1700s and 1800s. On the hunt before I found a Canada 1916 LC...this truly is a generational site with the potential for anything!

Too cool, while my only 1600's coin is really unidentifiable, (except to all but IP(and me)) and therefore don't really count, I have got a 1710 - 1942 coin spread at one site,so I do understand what your sayin', and I do like it. Hope you get at least one more kick at the can this year on this Fab. site.
Hope to do again the "dig" myself, but the snow in the air may have it's way.

BEAUTIFUL coin in BEAUTIFUL condition!!! Way to go!!:icon_thumright: Congratulations on your finds and especially for making the BANNER!!!! That coin looks really nice up there.
