Do you need hunting spots??? TRY THIS!!! @@

I also placed an ad looking for old coins and I got one reply back already on that one, that was quick

Detect for old coins or to purchase old coins in general?

Thanks for posting my secret weapon. I have been posting on c/l for several weeks doing this same thing. Thought it was my idea exclusively. Great minds?? Still yet to receive a response, tho. Glad it might work out for you. Good luck

Well I got another response. Some fellow resowed his lawn last fall and evidently used some sort of metal staples to hold them in place. He wants me to come look for them so he doesn't have to buy a detector just to find them. I don't mind doing this except he's about 70 miles away. Sheesh.
Have done a few gigs pulling old barb wire lines/posts from rural homesites where there are no longer farms. It's nasty work though, digging every iron signal bigger than whatever limit you set to leave behind. I will avoid pulling the small bits.

Might want to add that one to your ads, good for a day's work and the homeowner sees your results up front. Determine how you charge.

I posted an ad saying that I wanted to buy old coins, had a reply from a guy in my town who has quite a lot. I just never have used Craigslist till I saw this posting.

Mapo,
If you only started posting your "secret weapon" on C/L a few weeks ago, you're WAY behind the times big guy. I started this post back in
June 2007. ;D  Make sure you keep rerunning your ad every few days, otherwise it will get buried in the pile. Try different sections of C/L too. I would recommend trying your ad in different areas of C/L too. The "Wanted" , "General", and "Community" sections are where I run mine off & on. Also, put pictures in your ad of some relics and relic displays that you may have. That way the person can see what MAY be possible to be found. Good luck.

Hey MM... I just came back across your thread, and thought I'd repost up another, since I didn't get any responses last time when you first posted this. Well I just got my FIRST response!! I think it's a good one, just let me know what you think of it, and how I should respond. He made a point to mention the "split", which I'm ok with, as I'd be happy just to be out hunting. I guess I see it as, if I give up some good finds, I might get an open door in the future... if not more open doors because of it. Please let me know what you would suggest for a response.
Thanks!

there used to be a civil war encampment on(or near our property) your welcome to come and see what you find....will hold you to splitting what you find.....thanks Duane......[phone number]

I'd go in with cautious optimism. I guess the question is...if you find items that are worth "splitting" then how do you decide to split? I'd have a written agreement beforehand since the guy made a point to mention the split.

For example - lets say you found an amazing belt buckle and that's all you found. How do you split that? Do you have to sell it to split the proceeds? You'll want to think of a couple of possible scenerios and how you want the outcome to be.

I think that all in all you have a happy problem. Especially if the place has never been hunted...or at least not hunted in the last 20 years.

Keep us posted.

I will tell you from experience, once I show the owners what I have found, they usually just let me keep what I have found....They really don't have much interest other that seeing what is found.

Bran,
First off CONGRATS for getting what sounds like a great lead. Now hopefully when you get there the area is swingable.

Second, I agree with Baggins above. In all the places that I've detected so far, I have never had one owner ask me for any of my finds. They were more curious just to see the finds. I do however make some relic shadowboxes for the owners as a way of thanking them.

Third, I had a similar reply last year on my Craigslist ad. This person was the first ever to ask for a split up front. Here's the post, and everyones feelings on the "split" idea.

Good luck & keep us updated how you do.
Thanks,

Actually I'm glad you thought of it because I never would have. I tried it yesterday and have gotten 2 responces. The 1st one is property in Ga. with a cabin on it dating back to the civil war and old swimming hole. The guy said he used to detect back in the 70's but hasn't done it in years. Sounds like a great place. I haven't contacted the 2nd one yet, phone busy. Thanks for the tip.

Well, this was my reply to him...

Hi Duane,
Thank you for responding to my post! I would certainly be interested in metal detecting on your property, as soon as this weather improves some. Looks like it should be warming up between Thursday and Sunday.
I can't promise that I will find anything for sure... but it sounds as if your property definitely has history to it, so there's at least a possibility. If I do happen to find some relics, I'd be happy to split them with you. Hopefully you have a similar appreciation for historical artifacts, as I do. When is generally a good time for you?
My cell phone number (it's a Florida number) is 000-000-0000
I hope to hear from you soon!

Brandon

I will check out your "split" post, to see if I can glean so fresh ideas on the matter. I do have many different types of agreement forms, though I really don't think it best to use one during a first meeting/hunt.

Bran <><

Well, MM...
I read your thread and all the responses. It's funny because I originally had thought a 50/50 split would be fair, granted I even find anything at all. And I also had considered just having him take the first pick... since it's his property, and maybe giving up a good find would buy trust and an open door for his property, and maybe even an open door to other properties through him.

I guess my only scenario, though unlikely, was if I were to find a nice belt plate or a gold coin or something. Something with such a historical background would be nearly impossible for me to part with, knowing it's possible that I might never find another. :-\

Then again, there's always the chance where he might be an older guy that's just interested in having a few bullets or something like that, knowing they came from an encampment on his own land.

Guess I'll take along some agreement forms (just in case), and play the whole thing by ear. If he were to want to follow me around (not in a friendly way) or were to be aggressive in wanting my finds... I would just tell him my detector is acting up, apologize, and then leave.

Brandon,
Great job on the reply back to him. Very polite. I have never been in that awkward situation yet where I had to divide up my finds, and I hope I never am. When you first meet him, you may want to just offer to make him a nice relic display for letting you detect and leave it at that. Just say "I'd be glad to put YOUR relics into a display if you would like." That is, if you find enough to do so. That way you'll earn some good points with him right off the bat.
As far as finding something of value and giving it away I wouldn't do it. I may get a lot of boos & hisses on this subject, but if I dig up something that is a real find for me, it's going home with me sight unseen. I've read and heard of too many horror stories of someone spilling their guts on a big find, only to end up losing it or in court over it. Neither one of you knew it was even there in the first place. Silence is golden.
I have done my share of giving my relics away, building shadowboxes for owners, and finding peoples lost rings and not charging one penny, but let's face it, some relics we want to keep for our efforts.
Just make his display box "extra nice" if you end up with a prized find.
Good luck,
MM

Thanks MM! :)
You're right, I've heard those same stories over legal problems with retrieving finds on someone else's property. Guess the Three S's would come into play, eh? I definitely hope to get some finds I can pass on to the owner, and I like the idea of putting together a shadow box, even though I've never made one before. Hopefully it won't be too difficult. I guess if it came down to a very expensive find, I could always rebury & mark the location for another time, if it couldn't just be put into my pocket. Obviously, I would love to have a great find. Like I said before, I suppose it's probably best to play this whole thing by ear. In the meantime, I'm gonna go make another post for today!

Bran,
Sorry, I didn't mean you had to make any kind of fancy shadowbox. Pick up a few of these Riker cases like in the picture. They come with a glass top and cotton padding inside. Just clean up your relics, place them inside (labeling optional), and close the lid. Done deal. Just remember to keep these laying flat.
I can't find them at AC Moore or Michael's, but someone mentioned that they buy them at Hobby Lobby. I buy mine on E-bay. Depending on what size you want, they only run about $5- $8 each. Here's a link to to guy I use:
http://stores.shop.ebay.com/COLLIER-CREATIONS_Display-Cases_W0QQ_fsubZ2QQ_sidZ64574QQ_trksidZp4634Q2ec0Q2em322

I generally buy the 8" x 12" x 3/4" ($4.50) or the 12" x 16" x 3/4" ($6.50)(pictured). They also have 2" thick ones too.

Good luck,
MM
