well I got my first reply about getting properties to detect! today she sent me her address, phone number and directions. Here is what she told me.

We live in an older home just north of *******, OH. It is located near and used to face the canal, though it has been since reoriented. During a reconstruction project, there were old building foundations and a cellar uncovered so I am sure there are many other things we are unaware of. Everytime we dig we find something fun. We recently had a barn blown down in a storm and the clean up has left multiple roofing nails throughout our yard. As we have seven children, we would love to have someone with decent metal detectors look for nails. If you would be willing to pick up the nails as you search for treasures, we would be more than willing to allow you to have anything else you find. We have picked up the majority, but are sure there are others that are "out of sight." Thanks for your consideration.

Only thing is, finding nails is gonna be TOUGH because you know when your on an old homesite, iron signals are everywhere!!!! what do i do about that?

Goes4Ever,
Sounds like you've got an AWESOME opportunity!!! Don't let it pass by! The nails aren't a big deal, because they are surface nails (for the most part), so just get something like this (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93950) to clear an area before you detect it... or get one of the bar magnets they have, tie it to a rope behind you, and let that sucker drag behind ya' and pick 'em up for you! ;D
Either way, figure SOMETHING out and hit that place good!

yeah I thought about a magnet, good call! I am going to go up either this weekend or next!

Great... well let us know how you fair, especially with those nails.
And remember to try to take pictures too, if you can, so we can see too! :)

well just got off the phone with the owner, and we are going there satuday, he told me the house was built in 1910..........I am ready to go!

WOW !!!! Just posted and got a great response in under 10 hours!! Owner said the it use to be a layover place for travelers, Its between NYC and Hartford Ct. sort of a watering hole bar/hotel And its over 200 years old. But I do regret putting 50/50 split I guess I can give up the relics and keep the silver. If it turns out to be a hot spot!

Any suggestions on the splitting?

Cant wait will post updates!

My suggestion is you said you'd split so do the right thing and do it. I'm not talking about giving them the crap while you keep the good stuff, you know that's not right. Don't you? You were happy to split when you posted the ad before you got a response. But now you've gotten permission and you're getting treasure visions and trying to think of a way to get out of doing what you said you would do. If this person was nice enough to respond you need to live up to your word. Once you get there the person may not even care about splitting. If you split the finds and wind up giving the person something they appreciate, make sure you ask if they have any neighbors who might be interested. Then while they're still excited about what they've been given from their yard get them to go to the neighbors with you and theyll show off what you gave them and be your best salesman. Especially if they're on good terms with a lot of neighbors. If you'd rather not split, which is understandable, don't offer to do it in your ads.

I am lucky, the person who contacted me told me to feel free to keep whatever we find, in fact they said they would be leaving shortly after we got there and just stay all we hunt and have fun!

That's great news G4E.
I have a few spots like that too that I am free to roam whenever I please, and the owners don't want anything. For most it's just the fun of seeing what IS buried on their property.

I see I kind of shot myself in the foot starting this post & recommending Craigslist as a way to get properties. I was searching Craigs today in my area and someone has their ad running using my original letter (changed slightly) that I have on this TN post. They are looking for Colonial and 1870's and older houses. Boy, aren't we all. ;D

Cool idea and cool replies.

I'm thinking "How can you get more landowners to invite a stranger onto their property?" when the landowner is thinking "What's in it for me?"

So how about this... in your ad offer to PAY the landowners a certain amount of cash per hour. Say $5 an hour for you to detect their land, and YOU get to keep anything you find. Would you pay $25 to search a virgin historic site for 5 hours and keep whatever you find? I would! Heck, folks pay more than that for a round of golf. I think you would get more positive responses. You could even do a drive-by or judge by pics of the property if you think it's worth the "risk" of paying to detect there.

Win-Win situation.

Huh, offering to "pay to detect" someone's property... I think you might just be on to something!!
I would maybe be willing to drop 15 or 20 bucks in cash to someone to try and secure being able to detect their property.
But then again, if I wanted to come back, would they expect money again? I suppose it would be a great idea if I knew I only wanted to hit a place once, and that's it.

I remember reading somewhere where a guy would knock on the door of a place he wanted to detect, and he offered them a silver peace dollar in exchange for letting him detect.

I'm giving this method a shot. I'll let you all know what happens. Thanks for the idea.

Within THIRTY MINUTES of posting my ad:

Hello,

My name is ******. I saw your ad regarding land to search with your metal detectors.

I live in historic ******** & would love for you to see what you can find. My neighborhood was founded

in 1692.

My aunt ***** lived nearby & found a wonderful old cannonball while excavating for her pool.

Our home is listed with the historic society of ****** & is approx. 100 years old.

It's a small yard, but, is located on what used to be an old train station from what I'm told.

Directly behind our property is a newly excavated area where new homes are soon to be built.

I'm sure your could have a field day there now that the old *******'s supermarket asphalt has been

dug up & it's now all fresh soil exposed.

I am looking to re-seed my yard in mid April, so if your'e interested in searching it, you're more than welcome.

Feel free to call me 555-555-5555

Good luck in your search.

THANKS AGAIN!!! :D ;D :) :o 8) ;D

Score!!
Remember to post the outcome when you're able. I think we'd all love hearing of some great finds... :)

The number one way to know that you have struck a great idea, is by the number of responses....very good Idea indeed.

my hunt last weekend was a bust, the yard was so trashy, I felt lucky finding one lone wheatie!

I got another reply today:
I live on *** st. Year of house not know on record. I've found several old metal toy cars ect. in my garden. I'd like to know where my property marks are? Call me at ******* if interested.

the house is OLD, I checked it out, I called him and might go sunday if the rain holds off

well just got my 3rd house from my craig's list ad........was an 1890 home, did not find anything too old, but did get some wheats and silver, so made my day, my hunting partner got clad, and 7 wheats. I just re-run the same ad every 3 days, working great so far!
here are my finds.

Let's get this one back to the top.

Found out it works. Had 2 replies within 3 days of listing on CL.

1st reply
I enjoyed reading your ad. I have always wondered if anything would be found on the property where my grandparents house used to be. I need to find out who owns it, it may the the city or county or state as it is at the very beginning of the overpass on Eddy and Sample.

Unfortunately, this is a On / Off Ramp and most likely they graded the heck out of it when they built it. So I'll pass on it.

2nd reply
How about a 100+ year old abondond town in a woods near Rochester?

The town was more of a settlement and consisted of 5 cabins, according to an internet search.

Also found out the guy also owns a campground and granted me full access to it as well.

Thanks Doug for posting this great tool and sharing with all of us here. I wish I would have done this a couple of years ago when I first seen the original post.

No problem. I'm glad I could help. And one new property will lead to others too.
Good luck to you.
