I guess great minds think alike ;D I posted my ad yesterday, and this morning had 4 replies..people who have 100+ year old homes that would like to know what's buried around their properties. This is a really good way to go!

FOUR replies!!! You did better than me. ;D Those places should keep you busy for some time now.
Way to go.

Good luck Ken. Remember to rerun it every two or three days, so it stays up top in view. I put the instructions further up this post. Let us know how you do.

Are you around Fayetteville? I'm hitting an old place in Johnston County this w/end.
Good luck,
MM

Great idea guys, I am in South Africa so it would not work here.... but I am going to follow this topic.... all the best to you all.

God bless

Alright Folks,
I ran my ad on Craigslist for a 2nd time yesterday. The 1st time I received permission for two different old properties. Ridley and I hunted one of them last w/end, and did great. We were invited back again too.
Here is the reply I just got from yesterday's ad:

I have some land that is in the path of Joe Johnsons
and Sherman trip up to Bentonville
from Fayetteville.
One piece has an old buggy house and a house from
1800's
on it...can we say..plenty of old door hinges?

There is another house I used to live in that has a
NCSU class ring buried in the back yard...my father
lost it and I have often wanted to look for it but
never had the tools/knowledge of detector. Now that he
has passed, I'd really like to find it and would
reward someone who did find it
.

Sounds like an awesome detecting spot. Of course, Ridley and I would not take a reward from her. Just finding the ring and getting permission to hunt would be reward enough.

As you can see, Craigslist has been a good source of finding MDing spots for not only myself, but others too.
Give it a try, and remember......refresh (rerun) your ad about every 3-4 days so it stays up on top of the ads, and not buried.
Good luck,
MM

I went to the site. Where on earth did you put your ad at? There is allot of stuff on that site and I could not determine the best place for a post.

I have been doing this for 2 months now...That is where i have been getting all my spots from. You do however run into a ton of people who will expect to keep everything you find. That is why i have started using a contract with the homeowner.

Tin,
Once you find your local area, post the ad under the "wanted" section. Seems to work great.

MM,

I decided to give it a try as well. Hope to be getting some responses. Great Idea. I also listed on a local TV website that offers online classifieds. Will let everyone know how it goes.

Awesome idea MM. Will be working on my ad today and posting when I get home from training today. I've been getting bored with tot lots, so this is a great idea for finding new grounds, and most likely "virgin" detecting areas.

Thanks a bundle, and will post replies that I receive (and hopefully finds in that part of the forum).

HH

Good luck Neal.
Although the tot lots are great too, my favorite spots are old farms where I can find old coins and relics. Maybe someday that hidden cache. ;D
I can dream can't I? ;)
Have a great w/end,
MM

I tried this and got a call the next day to find a ring...

THANKS for the wealth of information......DPSB

I have tried this for a week, no responses. I deleted the ad and tried to place it in another area. It won't let me post it, saying it is to similar to a current ad.

Did I do something wrong?? I signed up for an account and it still won't let me post it. I have no ads on my account.

I've had that happen to me on Craigslist before too. I think if you try to rerun the ad within days of your original, it won't let you. Wait a few days, and try it again. If still no luck, e-mail them.
Good luck,

My friend and I both are avid metal detecting enthusists....We love to hunt for old relics, coins, etc. Not for profit, just for the excitement of digging up pieces of history.
We are currently looking for a few more places to detect. Mainly older homes and properties built before the 1950’s, or land that used to have a house or other activity on it.
We are both adults with years of experience in the metal detecting hobby, and will respect your property if allowed to detect on it. We only dig small holes (approx 3”) to retrieve the item and then refill the holes.
Some of our finds include: Civil War relics, coins, jewelry, old bottles, toys, trade tokens, dog tags, lost items, etc.
If you have an old property, farm, or land that you wouldn't mind us detecting on, please give me a call. You would be surprised what is buried in the dirt that you don't even know is there.
We are more than happy to split whatever we find too.
Thank you,
Randy

Thanks Edde.
That writeup looks VERY familiar. That's MY writeup he's using. See my original post at the start of this link. ;D
It has worked pretty well for me and Ridley so far.

MM, got a call on my Craigslist ad. He's got a 125 year old farm that's always been in his family. A lot of the original structures have been torn down including the original house, but he has pictures of where all of the buildings use to be. He also mentioned that his grandfather had buried a clay jar of money on the property, but it has never been found. He's invited me to come out anytime that's convenient for me, as he is home all of the time taking care of his father. Might be heading up this weekend to go hunt it for a little bit if my son's up to it. If not, I'll be going next weekend with my Dad. Thanks for the tip on using Craigslist. I did get two other contacts, but they have not returned my response.

Neal,
FANTASTIC!!! Congrats to you. Sounds like an awesome site that will give you a lot of future MDing time. I'm catching the next plane to NE. I want to hunt for that buried jar of coins with you and your son. :o ;D
Way to go. Hopefully we'll be seeing some posts from you soon.
Thanks,
MM

I ran the Craigslist ad again yesterday and got two more leads already.
One guy wants us to find his lost wedding band in his yard. He also is on an old farm property.

The second reply I received looks like they want to pay Ridley & I to detect for relics, BUT they keep the finds.
Here's that offer:
"Would you detect for hire? Our family has some property that has a rich history from the Revolutionary and Civil war. These particular sites have never been searched but we would like to retain the rights to anything recovered. Would you consider this?"

I'm not sure what to charge really? By the hour? By the find?
Maybe we could keep the coins and they could keep all the relics?
I'm still working out the details on this one.
Any input?

Craigslist has continued to produce leads for us. I just rerun the ad about every week, or as needed.
Good luck,
MM

MM,
This does sound like a great opportunity but I think it would be awfully difficult to give up all finds. maybe they will negotiate so you can keep some. This sounds like a difficult decision! Keep us informed.

As for my ad which gave me the opportunity to detect in a cemetary I have the first update. I was able to find 7 of their grave markers so far. In addition I found a wheat, a brass cross from the top of an urn, bullet casings and an earring. I will be going back again later in the summer probably.
