I completely agree. Question is - what can be done about it?

Charge the gun owner with manslaughter. Get a couple of negligent gun owners going to jail for improper safety into the news and I bet people will start paying a little better attention to where there guns are. Of course Stocky, you know you are doing what you call others out on with cherry picking examples.

"Crispin, these are kids lives. Saving even a few is extremely important."

I agree with you, but it is still cherry picking. I'm sure TH could post up just as many examples of when kids with guns saved something bad from happening. Granted, not at the 7y.o. and below level; but we all already agreed to charge those gun owners with manslaughter.

So...what I take out of that chart is the elderly are the most likely to die from accidents and 5-14y.os are the safest age bracket.

That is, of course, assuming bell curve for age population and distribution. The more people in each category the more likely an accident is to occur. Lies, damn lies, and statistics. :)

So is your point that because people die from other causes its ok that they die from guns??

Thing is, if you put any stock at all in the chart, would you also charge the parents of drowned and poisoned children or suffocated kids or is it just the firearm accident that causes us to get our panties in a bunch? What about those that leave their kid in the car on a hot day? If 450 kids age 0-4 drowned, how many negligent parents should go to prison? All of them? None of them? But 20 are killed by a gun and we are talking manslaughter? There is an agenda here, just can't put my finger on it................................. :)

No picker.........................but the government isn't trying to take away my pool (3,900 drowning deaths) or my small objects (3,400 deaths) or my poison (11,700 deaths) or my car (43,000 deaths)......they want to control my guns (600 deaths)

So that makes the gun deaths ok? When you get pulled over by a cop for spreading and you tell him or the traffic court that you were speeding but that you were following someone going even faster do you think that you still get a ticket?

And by the way because of these deaths there have been a ton of laws passed to increase pool safety. Do you think that the gov is overstepping by requiring fences around pools? Is it none of their business?

Don't be silly picker, no death by any cause is ok. Fences around pools is good. Apparently they should put fences around lakes?? I'm just saying that, if your 3 year old drowns there is NO DIFFERENCE IN THE DEGREE OF NEGLIGENCE than an accident with a gun yet we want to charge the gun owner with manslaughter. What is the difference between the two? I know.................the scary gun. And the kids that get into poison? Those parents don't deserve the SAME EXACT treatment as a negligent gun owner? There is no difference!!

Just an observation. It's strange that 6,800 would die "accidently" due to poisoning in the 25-44 age group unless it's alcohol poisoning. Any insight cris?

In a perfect world no-one would die from accidents or murder or disease ...you are never going to stop the deaths. Kids still drown in lakes, rivers, ponds, oceans, and streams every day and more than die from firearms, but we are not drying up all the water or putting fences around them. The leadin cause of death in the country is medical malpractice so we need to out law medicalcare? The negligence laws are all ready on the books what more can you really do? Out law anyone under 10 from handling a firearm ...you know how many people out in the country are going to follow that when they want to take their child out on their first hunt NONE. The blabbering of only guns are a horriable and fixable accidental death is nuts. Say what ever you want to about conspiracy but the only reason this is a big deal is you can't resist with water, vehicles, medicalcare, household poison, ect. If the priority was to stop child deaths it would start with medical malpractice, and then drowning the 2 leading causes.

Yup, if a child dies from drinking poison then charge the parent with manslaughter. If a child dies from drowning in a lake then charge the parent with manslaughter. If you cannot supervise your own children appropriately then you are responsible for their death. I'm not trying to take your gun away. I'm trying to hold parents responsible for keeping their children safe. Auto accidents are different and you know it...unless of course the child was not in a child safety seat, then....manslaughter.

No one here talking sbout taking guns away from anyone so im not sure were that is coming from. But lets run with your comment on the analogy. Lets say the state or fed gov wants to put in place laws requiring very safe storage of weapons - what would be the response?? Again I'm pro second but that would seem a very sensible law in my opinion.

they count deaths due to accidental overdose as poisoning. When it stops being medicinal and starts killing it goes from drug/medicine to poison. 24-44 is biggest bracket of drug users.

Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Anna Nicole Smith, Amy Winehouse....all "accidental death due to posioning." Sure you have some in their from alcohol, a few rare ones from Carbon Monoxide, but I bet the majority are from the hardcore drugs.

Nevermind the Carbon Monoxide, that falls into vapors/gases.

I take serious offense to the "medical malpractice" statement. I don't expect you to retract it; however, it was very offensive. Just letting you know how I feel. No need to respond.

We already have a "gun storage" program in Calif. When you buy a gun they ask what kind of safe you have. If you don't have one, you need to provide a gun lock for your gun. I don't need the government to tell me that. I have this little thing whispering in my ear at all times. It's called "common sense". I have the safe for safety reasons and security reasons.
btw.........in the post of mine that you quoted I didn't say anything about taking away my guns so I don't know where that is coming from. I will state in THIS post that they are trying to control my guns. I won't go into everything they have done and things they still want to do because that is all covered in other threads.

How would they enforce such a law?

Didn't think of drug od's cris. Good one! Maybe we should outlaw some drugs? Just a thought :)

Unfortunately what is common sense for you is not common sense for others. Lets use your pool analogy again. One would certainly think that that would be "common sense". And when these laws were put into place accidental deaths dropped significantly. Unfortunately we need laws sometimes because "common sense" is very subjective - correct

picker, this is a shorthand version of gun storage laws in Calif. and for your information I agree totally with it. Safe gun storage is high on my concerns about my guns and the guns of everyone else. This is a copy/paste.
You may be guilty of a misdemeanor or a felony if you keep a loaded firearm within any premises that are under your custody or control and a child under 18 years of age obtains and uses it, resulting in injury or death, or carries it to a public place, unless you stored the firearm in a locked container or locked the firearm with a locking device to temporarily keep it from functioning.
