Cricketts and Chipmunks??

Still don't mean that all young children are to uncoordinated or to stupid to ride ATVs, play guitar, and other things that require fine motor skills, and the ability to rationalize.

Kids develope and mature at different rates. I think we all agree that there is an age which is too young. We disagree on that age.

I don't think anyone is calling the children stupid.

Again, parents who allow their children to ride motorized vehicles are deluding themselves on the safety issues.

Do you know what the difference is between a Snell approved helmet and a non Snell Aproved helmet? Permanent brain injury!

Just in buying the cheapest parents have already compromised their children's safey. Yet these parents will give you chapter and verse on how saftey is job one with their children.

That being the fact- anyone here going to go out buy a Snell approved helmet for their kids who ride? Nope! They will just roll their eyes!

And most of those laws a babble now. Its what till a child is 75 lbs or something like that they should be in a seat. I would have been in a child seat till about 8th or 9th grade. I weighed 117 lbs when I graduated. Then there is the school bus children need to be in child seats, or where seat belts except when you pile 75 of them on a bus. Yes safety seats are a good thing but like 95% of laws they dont make much sense.

The laws are there to protect kids from careless, reckless, and irresponsible behavior. What doesn't make sense about that?

I think it is very assumptive of you to say that. I used to work in a bike shop years ago and the money these parents spent on their kids riding gear was unreal. The best of the best and always buying the newest edition. Do you have any facts to back up your statement ?

Just curious about helmet integrity. Does that mean every time a kid hits his football helmet against an opponent, the helmet isn't good anymore? Serious question, not trying to be the jerk I usually am. :)

I wonder how much these morons get paid to do these so-called "studies".
QUOTE: A study by Journal for the American Medical Association found that safety practices such as keeping firearms locked and unloaded with ammunition stored separately have been proven to reduce unintentional injury in homes with children and teenagers where guns are stored
These people are wizards! I wonder how long a study would take them to come up with, "Poisons and medicines locked up in your home will prevent injury and death to your child" or how about, "if you don't leave your small child unattended in the kiddie wading pool marketed for them, it will reduce the risk of them drowning". "Don't let your kids play with matches"......am I the first one to come up with this thought. I've got a million of them. Eliminating little, blowup kiddie pools would save a lot more lives than eliminating small 22's. Just sayin'

If they are morons for stating that locking up guns keeps kids safe than what does that say about the people who don't do it??

exactly!............................just don't limit those with common sense because morons exist.

My hand to my heart , some clothes irons have instruction labels that tell you not to iron your clothes while wearing them. Really people?

You can thank our "sue first, ask questions later" society for that one. We all make fun of it until an accident/death and the first thing that runs through someone's mind is "who can I sue"!!

My comments are limited to motorcycle helmets only. If it's not rated by Snell it is not the best helmet you can buy. Snell employes a higher testing standard. The impact absorbing material in these helmets is one and done. Once it has absorbed an impact it has done it's job. Same with DOT rated helmets.

Diesel, I don't need to back it up. Go into any shop that sells ATV and motorcycles to kids and look at what helmets they have. Dozens of the cheap crap, so that you can get the color and graphics little Johnny wants. And a few of the better and best helmets. Why? Because they can't afford to stock what doesn't sell.

Do most parents investigate for themselves the quality of the gear they are buying? I think not. Most buy what the dealer recommends. And the dealer recommends what they have in stock.

And if you ask the dealer they may feed you some line about how it doesn't matter. I've had dealers tell me the helmet ratings are just govt BS. I'm sure not many in this crowd are going to disagree with that. Most will do as you are doing here. Find a way to justify less than the best. Of course in the end, we are only talking about your children's head.

That's funny!!! Unfortunately, they probably got sued.

Yeah, I was surprised by the "Caution, Alligators will Bite!" sign in one southern town.

Litigation happy society. Drunk pilot crashes airplane. Drunk's widow sues the manufacturer of every part on the airplane. Case get's to jury who decides in favor of the defendents. Six years from start to finish. Legal cost to defend - over a million dollars.

If we are to be all about saving the little children, why hasn't big brother stepped in and mandated the safer helmets?? Guess I'm back to being the jerk. :)

That's a good question, feel free to start up a thread on safety helmets if you would like. I do know they are learning more and more about the long term damage from sports related concussions. But we will leave that for another thread.

No kidding! I read this crap in my journals all the time. Stop wasting money on this stupid nonsense! Drives me crazy.

The better question is why don't parents know this?

One of my first flight instructors said something to me that really stuck. "What you don't know can't hurt you, it will kill you!!! His attempt at humor made an important point.

Riding motorcycles is dangerous. We as adults accept that risk. There are ways to increase that risk and ways to reduce it. But to do either, you first have to know what the risks are, how they are created, and how to mitigate against them.

Safety gear is one way to reduce the risk factor. What you don't know can kill you. The information is out there. It is not hard to find. All anyone need do is look.

I think the safety issue as it relates to motorcycles is relevant to the conversation. Parents are responsible for their children's safety while riding. The question is what is safe? The same can be said for children using firearms. What passes for safe by one parent may not pass with another. And, ultimately what passes for safe may not be safe at all.

Pop quiz:
