Basic signs and symbols you have found

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

Desertmoons,

Which one??

The one the girs are standing on?
Or the monster behind them?

The Big one is a monument or land mark for mapping.
The little one is the pointer, if you can figure the general place where it came from it shouldn't be to hard to find the trail where it continues ... on the other side of the highway I suspect.

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

Thanks for the welcome. I'm not working on anything since I am new and unfamiliar. I am in Colorado and go either hiking or 4-wheeling about twice a month during the summer. I've never seen a Spanish sign in person but I'll certainly be looking up more while hiking. Most of the trips I go on are day trips meaning they are relatively close to the Denver area.

What started my interest was purchasing a book online about Colorado treasures. Mostly natural "treasures" that can be hiked to and it mentioned Spanish trails. Did some googling and found this site. There is a lot of interesting info posted here.

BigE,

Welcome to T-Net, glad you chose this thread to post in first.
Hope you stick around and show us what you are doing,
and get to know some of the finest people in the world.

The picture is just out of focus enough to distort that feature.
There are protrusions but I won't commit any farther than that.

Those type of eye catchers usually point to something a bit closer like a triangle pointer , and a major one at that. looking at the way the white stones were placed it was meant to be seen from two directions.
So there may be something above each white stone, that means the same each way.
Beyond this It would be foolish to say because it isn't my trail and I haven't seen the marker.

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

Sorry for the absence ... Had to be with an old friend who is dying, needed to get my head straight before I came back.

When you are watching for signs be sure to look at more than just the large rocks. there are small stones on the ground that lay flat or are even on a larger rock that will tell a big story.
How about a rock cut into a dish that contours exactly like the valley below. The dish shaped stone is about two feet in diameter (give or take) The small stones exactly imitate a series of stones that cut across the valley floor.

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

The thing to remember is not just rocks and rock monuments and signs, I have shown here that stumps are good signs as well as are the trees themselves. These trees can and do live for many hundreds of years,
there is a record somewhere of one that is over 1000 years old and is still growing strong.

The Spanish would trim these trees so that they would grow and point the way.

or put a rock in the crotch of the tree to point out the trail,

they would take a long dead tree and lay it on the side of the trail.

or as I have shown before they would kill a tree and leave one branch to point the way.

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

cool....always learning more....I saw some stumps when I was out Friday and for the first time they caught my attention as did many other things....also made me marvel at what an incredible world our God created for us. I took a lot of pics of different things....each time you post more I can go back through and see if there was anything else I missed. lol Thanks so much for this incredible thread....it is truly inspiring and has given me something to enjoy lately.....and gotten me back out hiking a bit during my time off too! That can't be bad! lol

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

Cyndi,
If I accomplished that with this thread,
Then it was a total success !
for everyone,
Looking at things from any perspective is good, as long as you get out and look.

All of life is waiting to be taken.
even if it just happens along in front of you you have to choose to be part of it.
These chances only come along once.
If you miss them there is rarely a second chance,
and never a second go around on a missed one.
There aren't any "time outs" in life.

Here is a stacked abutment that I saw while chasing the tree trail in the above photos,
I investigated ,

and found an old Spanish camp site. Complete with the fire place and the wood pile.

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

Definitely looks like a cool place to run a metal detector! Looks like a cool place to walk around and contemplate history too! I would sooo wanna explore! lol Sometime when you are bored and wanna explore someplace let me know.....I only took about 98 pictures on Friday! rofl

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

well they seem interesting to me! lol I am actually uploading them to a web album at the moment on my gmail account...I will let ya have a link to it so you can scroll through and see if any of it is interesting.

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

Thom,

Did the trees point to the camp site, was there any indication that a camp site was near, or did you just happen to spot it?

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

The camp is about 35 or 40 yards off the trail.
There were several trees pointing to it as well as a couple of stone pointers.
But I saw the abutment before I saw the pointers.
The abutment was used to level an area to camp on in front of a protective wall of stone.
(note the outcropping)

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

WOW havent posted here in a while and began exploring other sections other than the metal detecting sites---never even heard of any of this type of stuff till now---Does anyone know if this was done in Pa or was this mainly something that was done out west. I am looking for all types of interesting hobbies for my son who is now turning 14(my last post he was 10) and metal detecting still has his attention as well as geocaching, but something like this...wow...he would go ape sh*t over.

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

resq937,

I see no problem with a kid your son's age learning what actually happened in this country.
Instead of what historians want to put in a book.

I think 14 is a good age,
There is nothing better than gathering truth.
I started doing this when I was 15.

I don't think it has hurt me too badly

LOL

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

I am thinking OD....i think maybe i oughta haul the tesoro up there and see what she finds tomorrow.
Kinda on pins and needles out here waiting for the coman to call for a bit swap...cutting is getting ratty
and we have about another 4 degrees to drop in the hole to be verticle and done with the drop.

And that being said...what about waiting till the K5 is repowered and finishing the already started CP1 hole?

Good call Doug,

But I must say I am itching to get it going again.
We worked to hard on it not to finish. LOL

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

go go go....wait! Come get me first! I can work hard, really!! lol Wishing you both the best of luck and blessings in your hunts. Thanks so much for sharing so much of your knowledge with the rest of us! ~hugs~

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

Cyndi,
Was going to try to post some monuments next, since all that has been posted of them yet are the turtle earlier and the face . there are a lot of things that are still to pour over and ponder.
