Am I the only one who packs heat while detecting?

Mine is a 1991 Colt. This is a "re-issue" of the 1911-A1. It took a trip through the Colt Custom shop on their nickle to replace the barrel, bushing, slide, and link. These then were hand fitted to a tolerance of 3 thousandths. The trigger was reworked to a 3 3/4 lb pull that is as clean as breaking a glass swizzle stick. The feed ramp has been polished to the point that it will feed anything from hardball to flying ashtrays. Colt even sent back two targets fired from a Ransom rest at 25 yards that show 1.25" 5 shot groups. If I do my part at the same distance, 7 rounds can be covered by the Joker from a pack of Bicycles. Yessir, John Moses Browning surely knew what he was doing!

Being a single action, the rolled up $20 goes in the cylinder that the hammer is resting on. The old timers know the reasoning for this.

How old a pistol are you carrying?

Almost all modern revolvers have a transfer bar or true hammerblock to allow them to be carried fully loaded without risk of a misfire when dropped.

Lasivian,

A three screw Ruger is not the more modern type of revolver and has none of the equipment standard you speak of, It is an old style single action. Ruger offers a factory installed kit that does put these options into play but serious collectors think this detracts from the value of an original gun. So there are a lot of three screw Rugers running around that should be carried with a max load of 5 rounds..... And the hammer on the empty..... For safety's sake.

Here's a Ruger Single Six 22/22WMR 3 screw with the mag cylinder that I bought new in 1965 right after I got out of the service. There's been an ongoing recall for years to retrofit the weapon for safety but as OD suggested, it retains more value in it's original condition. Jim

I have a 3 screw Blackhawk in 357 that someone put the retro fit transfer bar kit in.
It had a terrible "laywer proof" trigger pull on it.
Luckily the old original parts were still in the box so I swapped out the new stuff and put the old hammer and trigger and springs back in it and it has a smooth as butter action now.
I don't even know what I did with the new transfer bar parts.
The gun is so smooth with the old parts I wont put the new ones back in anyway.

Maverick,

My favorite long range pistol is an old blackhawk 30 carbine I got when I was a kid. I like it as it is. No new equipment and as smooth an action I have never found on any double action.

It will put six in a coffee can lid at 100 yards. And recoils like a .22 mag.

Last time I fired a Ruger in .30Carbine, the muzzle flash would light up a small auditorium. It was fun though!

Do I carry? Always....Why? I'm female, small framed, and some people are just plain crazy.
I am licenced to carry in Ar, Oklahoma, Tenn, Mo and Ky. My licence is unrestricted, any handgun.
I was trained by one of our finest. To use his words, " I don't want to be called out and find you dead".
The man knew at one time I had to carry a lot of money, twice a day. Now the druggies don't forget that.
I don't do that anymore, and I'm glad I don't. But it's 5am when I leave for work,I have car problems I don't want to depend on a cell phone to save my life.I want something I can depend on....
Would I use it? In a heart beat. I was told by ALL the deputy's...Don't let ANYONE within 20 foot of me.
Worry about what the person wanted later.
In the woods where I hunt we have some very bad critters, rattlers with 5 inch long rattles, we also have some lovely panthers...neither one of these will try to get away. We also had a 2 million$ drug bust a couple years ago, not far from where I hunt. I hunt with one earphone on..so I can hear.
I have have to watch my a$$ no-one else will. I'm not going to quit detecting because a lot of nuts are out there. I hunt only on private property, not supposed to be anyone there but me...It's also about 3 miles from the nearest house. If someone finds me they are in the wrong area. I have been shot at twice; Will I shoot back? You bet.

Padre Joel,

I'll bet the report surprised you too.
They are about the loudest thing I have heard in a while. even louder than a .44 Mag when fired side by side.

Accurate to an nth too. I like that. Not much on range beyond 150 yards But who cares.

LOL

Old Dog,

As my feeble mind can remember the report was more of a high freq. crack than a boom, bang or pow. It really assaulted the naked ear to the point that it became down right uncomfortable to shoot. Flinchitis in a fist!

Hi RevJoel,
I agree. I carried the thing for years as a backup when hunting. For protection other times.
and I must say it does assault the ears. what surprises me is the sound doesn't carry as far as most pistols.
Not a good choice to use as a signal.

Used it twice to my recolection for a kill shot on elk. and it only made me angry because I had to use it, I don't seem to remember how loud it was at the time.

Add me to the list. In my area I seldom consider carrying in the parks in town etc. as I'm fortunate to live in a pretty peaceful, crime free (relatively) spot. I generally do have a weapon in the vehicle, however. Out of town where I hunt often, as I like old homesteads, mining and logging camps, campgrounds etc. I always carry a pistol due to the same reasons mentioned above. Animals, renegade humans, pot plantations or whatever. I did encounter a bear while detecting recently, but fortunately he seemed more frightened than me and ran off down the hill.
As a last thought, we should all remember that carrying a firearm on or near school grounds is really asking for trouble after the tragedies over the last few years.

In my state, carrying on school property is illegal and will lose you your CPL as will carrying in a church, hospital, casino, bar that doesn't serve food as at least 50% of it's business and any event venue that seats more than 2500 people.

I remember once being asked why I, as a Priest, should own a pistol, actually pistols, and "assault weapons". First of all, I do not recall at any time during my Rite of Ordination or the taking of my Sacred Vows ceding the other rights of a human being created by by a Just and Loving God. Secondly I don't own any Assault Weapons, and that is strictly because the cost of AW's has gone through roof since Pres Bush the First banned the manufacture of new ones for the civilian market. All mine are semi-automatic versions of the militrary AW. They lack the ablility to switch to Full Auto Fire, a pre-requisite for an Assault Weapon. I own no "high capacity ammunition clips" or "reduced capacity clips". What I do have are standard capacity magazines.

What the anti crowd doesn't ever realize is that words mean things, and calling a semiauto rifle an Assault Weapon over and over is not going to make it one.

Bottom line, why should anyone want to own one? For the simple reason that the Gov.Org doesn't want you to have one. That is sufficient enough reason. If we were still the Republic established by the founding fathers in the late 18th century it would be different. But that was all changed in the early 20th century.

Actually, the assault weapons ban of 1994 is not what prohibited auto weapons. in 1989, the ban against manufacture or importation of "machine guns" ie. full auto weapons, went into effect. In 1994, congress, in its infinite wisdom, classified assault weapons as any firearm with the following characteristics:

rifles - threaded barrel, pistol grip, folding stock, detachable magazines over 10 rnds, and the infamaous bayonet lug.

pistols - threaded barrels, magazine capacity over 10 rnds, magazine well outside or forward of the pistol grip, forend or vertical support(the actual definition was "any object that allows the shooter to support, forward of the pistol grip, with the non-firing hand")

shotguns - pistol grip, detachable magazine, folding/collapsable stock, bayonet lug

soo... actually the military clones that you may or may not have were probably considered assault weapons. I know most of my rifles were all considered as "banned" under the 94 AWB.None of them were automatic, supressed, or "class III". That ban sunset (no longer applicable on a federal level) in 2004. It was originally pushed through as a study on the sale/effect/statistics of so-called "assault weapons". The end of the study showed that there was ZERO decrease in crime (there was actually an increase) based on the ban.

Class II and III weapons can be legally owned, depending on state, with the proper licensing, registration, and "tax" paid to the federal government and the ATF. Full auto weapons, silencers, short barrelled rifles and the like all fall under that category.

That is what I mean though. A true assault weapon is a class III firearm and George the First banned the manufacture and importation of new class III for the civilian market. The 1994 act bans certain cosmetic features. I do remember Feinstein, Boxer and Meetzenbaum pointing to pictures in Janes SmallArms of the World and listing what scared them the most!

ahhh.
just wanted to clarify. The "definition" changed when they wrote the 1994 AWB law. I'm just glad it's gone. Hopefully those morons in congress don't try to put it back through.

steve

I pack also depending on where I am at. I always carry one and some times two pistols.
I have a carry permit and hope I never need to use my pistol but not to have one and need
it is foolish maybe deadly.
