What? No door knocking around them old houses?
A friend and I were returning from Georgia , tired ,burned out enough that I took a turn a driving while he tried to sleep.
My orders were to wake him at Cincinnati to visit an Aunt.
When we hit Cincinnati I was freaking out at all the lanes and traffic!
Yelling at my friend to wake up and then he's yelling to take an exit....
I'm nearest the centerlane white knuckled in solid traffic going a wee bit fast , while cars zip past me still.
I looked at one passing me (a slightly tired Plymouth Duster looking car) and the ol gal on it's gas pedal looked determined...L.o.l..
We didn't make it into the city.
Been through some cities where I didn't feel welcomed in the slightest. Being a stranger didn't help.
Others were better. But...I was not detecting either.
One old house (not in a big city) kinda messed me up by the smells coming out of it.
Raccoon pee is no strange scent , but the combination it and probably cat pee for a kicker , with neglect and water damage as a bonus smells got harsh pretty quick. Harsh as in a reality of historical decay and the ravages of unattended dwellings..
A warm day and the banked cool night air was seeping out of the structure into the yard.
A far cry from the homes occupied history , that scent.... Holidays , harvest season , day to day clean kitchen scents.
Later a former resident showed up.
Must have been very different for her from the memories of when the home was livable , and the yard looking more civil. But she visited regular back then... Almost like a living ghost.
That home was built on a previous ones site long ago.
And it now is gone too. Site leveled and commercially for sale.
I kept a large spoon from it's yard.
Not sure who is left that ever lived there , but know another gal who is fading who used to visit/be there a lot.
One day a spoon might be all that's left as a tangible to remember that homesteads former habitation. Till no one knows where the spoon was recovered from anymore , or it gets discarded..
That reminded me of a house I visited 37 years ago. Back up a second. A couple years ago, unfortunately someone died in my brothers apartment and wasn’t found for days. My brother was in the hospital when it happened. Well authorities notified him and he asked us to please clean up before he was released from hospital. This was during one of his amputations. That’s the worst smell.
Back to the reminder. The house I visited had many kids, few still in diapers, wife pregnant, and husband was only concerned about selling pot. That smell from their house was the 2nd worst smell I have ever smelled.
Cincinnati I can do some what. Only because of familiarity. Many times though we ended up in Kentucky when we were trying to go to a ball game.
Morning WD.
WD,
You should have gone for the gusto and visited the cemetary & just told anyone who asked you had a bunch of crazy pirates on the ship who would take out the whole neighborhood if they touched you....
Nothing like turning off he express/freeway option, saw a bit of rural Penn. one time. The black carriages pulled by the horse gave it all away, we weren't on the interstate.
Good afternoon crew mates. Well,we’ll,well,we have been a busy crew!
Congrats GB out there in the pilot’s seat!
Congrats Toecutter on Banner, awesome!
RR best of luck Sat. Bring home a big one!
Pepperj thanks for the info on corn meal, I will pass that info along.
WHADIFIND, professional hiders....ya I learned a lot from them.
WD you’re taking big city tours now? We’ll take the cannons with us next time....might I suggest a drone?
So the deck is swabbed and we have fresh spirits, now that’s what I call ship shape!
I got waylaid by a bunch of rug rats, boy are they quick!
Size 62 fits my head perfectly, but I wouldn't want to wear it.
My grandfather forever lamented at the fact that he wasn't fighting the Germans. He was 9 when the war broke out, and he remembered the patriotism at home, and the fact that he was too young to go off. He wanted to "kill Germans, and bring back their helmets and Lugers, and rip the SS patches from their uniforms as trophies". Strong talk from a guy whose father was 100% pure German. He collected all kinds of German and Japanese weapons and such, relics that he wanted to bring home. Now, I am trying to get this helmet as a "war trophy", something I think he would have loved to have seen.
