I've been doing this hobby for nigh on to a half century now. And I pretty much already know most of the answer to my beginner's question.
When I started, with a Garrett Groundhog I learned a lot about tuning out the ground. I learned about the default and how to tune it a little hotter/cooler. Even when it was prudent to do so.
But, since I got the AT I sort of got lazy. I use the machine's auto tune technique and generally just go with it, readjusting from time to time.
My question is whether my grounds are much higher than most. The AT tends to tune to 90 to 94 in most places.
Is that what most people get, here? Is there a suggestion of whether tuning lower or higher than that might improve my depth/identifying?
Can anyone suggest or point out where I might find such information here?
Thanks!
Stay off the plank! I just waxed it!
Hey RR. What’s happening?
Thanks for the hints folks.
I have watched all of Garrett's vids. And been doing this a long time so I think I have a pretty good handle. There's just two things I'm unsure about. I'm wondering what numbers other AT Pro users deal with compared to my 90's. I know that mineralization does affect finding ability. Just wondering how different they are from place to place. I have seen the ground change large amounts sometimes, within yards of each check. Anyone else retune their machines as they walk?
2nd; when one manually ground balances, what effect does tuning a bit higher or lower than the auto tune wants, affect finding.
That make any sense?
A good example of ground balance is an old football field I’ve hunted fo years. The south ends GB is different from the north end I believe because the south end is lower and stays wetter longer after rain. When detecting the field from south to north I always ground balance when I get about the 50 yard line. I manual ground balance regularly on the Pro. On my other machines that have ground tracking, I never use it. I guess I don’t trust it as much as manual GB.
But, what are your numbers?
And when you manually tune it, do you tend to leave it to the high side or low? How do *you* determine when its right?
I will on the Pro move the GB up one and the same on my Fisher. I leave it the same on the Deus. If the Pros GB is 70 which is purdy common for my ground, I move it up to 71.
