Mornin all.

Notice the cat didn't step on it....

Property behind the house was logged recently.
I expected deer would find browse where sunlight reached the ground next year.
Dogs barked when we went out just after daylight , a der had bedded near the fence.
It sashayed away. Then came back in a couple minutes watching and listening before turning around and sliding off again.
It does not want to use the cover along the fence with us there , but does not want to be in the more open logged area either...

Morning RC
Most hunters around here are saying the deer will be in the open fields looking for food as most of the wild apple/acorn crops failed due to the Gypsy moth caterpillar infestation we had this year.
Sure the leaves came back, but not the fruit on the trees.
So they'll be looking for something to eat-might be a hard winter on them if there's not the fall fat put on the bones.
I have a 1/4 ton of extra corn, might just get a bit of molasses to mix a little treat up for them/then again I did see a big old apple tree that got missed, can't recall where off hand.
A couple of years ago I picked up a few bushels of deer apples, dropped down the sugar bush trails for them, it was a treat that disappeared daily by the herd that winters in the sugar bush.
I saw the other day the resident flock of turkeys, 3 hens and the 8 chicks that are growing up now.
It's great to see after the Jack Russel that bordered the property passed away. :hello2: (Little rat killer would kill the chicks off every year-owner would just chuckle when it returned covered in blood-"Oh it must of being out killing turkeys again")
I'd just be biting my tongue-inside I'd be :BangHead:
Just pissed me off when somebody claims their dog doesn't roam-(thinking) please explain why it goes around the hamlet every Tuesday ripping the bags of trash open and I see it running on the property.
Never harmed it-just wished it another life.
Funny thing just happened-Max was a fussing and the Mrs said "Look there's the flock of turkey's by the sand pile"
Sure enough there they were-they took flying off across the bay. To survive now for another day.

Good morning, seafaring types and land lubbers!

Lots of videos to watch/listen to this morn!

OV, thanks for throwing some country in there! Wish a had a love button for a couple of those.

Bart, ewwwwwwwwwwwww!

Rook were you at a treasure museum?

The rain is past. It is supposed to be a beautiful day today. Too bad I have a bunch of inside stuff still on the to do list.

Yesterday, I made beef stew. Pulled up a couple recipes, didn't have all the ingredients for either. Used what I had and it was purdy goooood!

Slingshot answers stray/loose dogs around here. There are exceptions , like one girl who gets returned to a home she has a reason to want to leave.....

Apple crop was reported as expected to be down 20-30% or something a while back.
No acorns noted around the house , again. Not a dependable source of mast , but a boon to winter fat stores when they are. But below the oak canopy , very little browse.

Mobility keeps deer finding the minute tonnage of woody browse through the winter. Deep snow or ice crusts....And deer don't get to feed the same.
Most lose a generous portion of weight in a "normal" winter with a reduced metabolism. Winter severity level factors in the outcome...

I made money after the road got cleared (it was a couple weeks after the storm/blizzard of 78 if recalled correctly) by going to a wealthy district and shoveling roofs.
That winter , farmers (not always known for a love of deer in thier crops) hauled supplemental feed into a swamp near where I would acquire property decades later.
That willingness to retain a nucleus of a deer herd as opposed to trying to exterminate them all , hinted to me that I could see some regular.
Panned out at such.

Thank you for that one RC! Brought back memories and then I got to looking for one on Dayton. I happened across another type of historical video on Dayton. I packed up the laptop and went to my dads and watched it with him. He really enjoyed reminiscing and told me some stories. A very good day!

You were brought up right......:laughing7:

Well someone had to break up the monotony ... :P

Yep... a momentary lapse in adulthood always helps.

:)

Having a quiche for supper with some mushrooms, sauteed kale and leeks with a side salad.

Well I made it out to the berry patch/garden to investigate what was up after a couple days of rain.
Slugs are back messing with the strawberries-must be all the moisture that brought them back.
Picked 75 lbs of tomatoes before the rain, and lucky I did because there was a tad bit of splitting going on.
Never seen tomatoes actually blow apart like a flower bud breaking open.
Chickens were mighty glad to see the splits.
Two heaping pints of strawberries, lots of blossoms and one still ripening.
Sunny skies is the forecast for tomorrow-might start something new-then again I might not-time to sleep on it.

Ha, all that are left in our garden are a few brussels sprouts plants, but I pulled slugs off of them today like you.

Jim/CreakyDigger,

A trick for dealing with slugs....spread some sawdust around the plants they tend to attack to deter them.

Didn't try it , stale beer in a jar buried with the top near ground level is supposed to drown them.

RC,

Yep that works to, however, I prefer to drink the beer and the slugs can help themselves to the sawdust....:laughing7::laughing7::laughing7:

Thhhhrrrbtttbrpppptttt!!!!

...............beans.

Nite folks!

Morning.

Is it morning again already.....I get up to early.
