Jim,

That should do the trick with the compost we just need an activator of some sorts to get it heated up real good.

My older brother had a friend who let him use a piece of his land for gardening on his farm. He said the vegetables grew like they were on steroids....:laughing7::laughing7::laughing7:

Reason was he had raised pigs on that piece of land for 25 years running imagine the volume of manure which built up over that time.

Another fella he knew raised dairy cattle and he'd pile up the manure on both sides of his driveway which ran several hundred feet to the main road. He planted rhubarb along there and only charged 50 cents for a big armful he probably made a couple of thousand per year even at that price. It produced so much.

Neighbour on the island use to plant his tomatoes in the black earth from the cows. Yup they loved it, full sun, never any blight, huge fruit. There's a couple that I met and they plant in straight sheep, crazy growth.
I get my best seedlings from the compost pile every year it seems. If it spouts there it's a winner it seems.
Went to see what the compost pile looked like in the tractor, everything thawed to the pile, tad MUDDY! though the pile was frozen like a turd at -40C.

Back to my new chicken door-why another project that I thought would be an easy.
The back half of the barn has Hemlock 2"X 6" lumber on the inside for protection for the horse kicks on the OSB. Then sawn full 2x6 insulated walls then the OSB on the outside. I'm putting a reclaimed electrical panel box I took off a barn demo for the passage door. I'll put another insulated one on the inside.
They'll have a tunnel to go through-learning experience once again.

Looks delicious RTR-but my belly is no-no Jim-don't do it. :laughing7:

Is it just the herbs and spices that you do organic or other foods as well?

Pretty much everything we eat is organic for the last 10 years (if we can find it). Makes a world of difference in taste:)

With all the supermarket recalls for fruits and veggies, ie; e coli, etc....I can understand the switch to organic if possible.

We've got a decent set up for grow lights to start our seedlings....now I'm considering putting in a shelving unit for growing green, etc....during the winter and avoid more of the supermarket junk.

We'll be growing and preserving as much as we can this gardening season all natural just compost and manure.

Jim,

If you're stomach can't handle the zingy stuff sometimes just a good rub of herbs add a nice touch to foods herbes de provence is one and zataar is another blend we use, and for mild heat ras al hanout from the middle east adds a nice touch.

A tune for the crew. WD congratulations on making down to the wire you'll be spending your days in the she shed in no time.

Woo hoo! One more day! Just one more!

Add my congratulations on making it to the finish line, milady!

Just one thing? Starting the day after tomorrow? Let us know how long it takes for you to say those "immortal" words......"MAN! AM I EVER BORED!!!"

More fun tomorrow. As our people say level 4 storms. Out of 5. Spent today loading the shelter and getting ready. Ho hum spring in the south. Level 4 is long running tornadoes with wind damage possible. Last week was only 9 tornadoes south of us. But look at this way. Not a matter time but when. We shall see tomorrow. Anyone in this path of storms stay safe.

LOL I will.

Any of you guys have maple trees ?..... Last Nov. I decided to tap one of ours in the back yard for maple syrup . My First time at this I only tapped 1 tree (18" Dia. 5 ft. above ground) As per Utube :)
A couple weeks ago I checked it out and had 2.5 quarts clear syrup in the container.
Brought it inside, filtered it, and boiled (reduced it) down to 40 to 1 ratio.( took about 3 hrs.)
Amazing ! This tastes as good if not better than store bought :)
So 2.5 qts. raw syrup only netted a few ozs....But Boy IT IS GOOD :)

IF you have trees. try it next year...I will !:)

Roger,

Good going on the maple syrup. We're fortunate with Quebec being the largest producer of maple syrup not cheap but based on the ratios you can understand why the high price.

Amazing how it turns from clear to brown just by boiling/reducing :)

Reminds me of the time I actually cut a bit of bark from the root of an *actual* sassafrass tree and made some tea.

It was *WONDERFUL*!

But to fully understand my delight is to know that I am *NOT* in any way, knowledgeable about making my own......ANYTHING!

City slicker! Thought things grew on grocery shelves! :tongue3:
