THE Random Chat Thread - AKA "The RCT" - No shirt or shoes required - Open 24 / 7

Morning guys. :coffee2:
A cool wet & windy day here today, thankfully I got to swing the coil for a while yesterday afternoon.

I also introduced myself to a very nice gentleman who lives across the street from one of my permissions yesterday.
He has a couple of retired racehorses that he keeps as pets and gave me permission to detect his property.

I mentioned to him, that the 'barn' that he now uses as a stable, was likely originally a house based on its design.
I'm going to get a copy made of his house location on my c1870 map and gift it to him as he wasn't aware of this map.

The house is identified in green on the map and on both pics.

PS. Here's an aerial view of how the site looks today.
Note the row of old homes that were originally on the property to the north.
I'm thinking these were homes for the folks who worked at the mill up the road.

Was out just checking a few tarps over some lumber piles.

1C - 80% Humidity-a real damp feeling morning out there.

Do I suck it up buttercup and go out working or hunker down and wimp out?

Nice going on the permission and the map idea.

I've printed off the map and gave the landowner one few times-sometimes it's the deal breaker in getting the permission as they're so grateful for the history of their property.

Did you find anything yesterday?

Dave,

Nice gesture on giving the gentleman a copy of the map. So around the old barn site is probably ground zero for interesting finds.

Got 80 more Raspberries in yesterday, and I hit a wall physically/mentally on digging holes.
So I rewarded myself for a quick -2 hr hunt at a hard hit site digging holes.:headbang:

A small musket ball out on the outer reaches of the site in the field-that was the highlight of the hunt.
The grass is almost flat and I really wanted to have the bigger coil on the Deus-but there seems to be a mental glitch on switching over.
I just get a blinking empty coil sign on the keypad-I've charged it up.
The headphone part shows a charged up coil but it doesn't switch over. :icon_scratch:
I love technology sometimes-so inept me is at times-maybe its just not enough time.

I might post this up on the Deus forum and see what advice I get.
Have to send everything into Deus when the season ends for the service-keypad screen shadow-updates (need a Microsoft version computer it seems) pinpointer needs the new version also to work, test the battery levels.

Hi Jim, in reference to your first question... take today off and relax.

I was detecting at the old homesite across the street and found a small bent up tea spoon.
I've already found three others with the exact same pattern here, so these were probably from a set of six.
I also found a c1862 HB&H #2 size lamp burner. I started to get pretty cold around 4:30pm, so I headed home after about only 90mins.

You'll find this interesting Jim, the gentleman told me that he grew up in Vancouver and moved to Ontario in 1973 to work at the newly opened Toronto Zoo.
He worked there for 35 years until his retirement in 2008.

Here's what the burner originally looked like.

Jim,

80 raspberry plants is going to give you a lot of production. You'll have to set up a stand at the end of your driveway next year to sell the surplus....:laughing7::laughing7::laughing7:

Thanks Bill, a little kindness goes a long way to letting folks know that we're trustworthy folks.

I learned that trick from a buddy of mine by the name of pepperj. :laughing7:

I've also just sent off an email to Bill Dancy, letting him know that I want to buy the 2nd edition of his book.
The last time I tried to order it in 2018, it had sold out in 4 months

Sounds like posting your question in the Deus Forum here would be your best bet Jim.
You also might want to consider contacting these guys directly with your question... https://www.xpmetaldetectors.com/metal-detector/deus/

Strange I find it that Bill was on the forums posting regularly-sold the last copy and now a ghost basically-22 months since a reply to anything-but still lurks often.:dontknow:

I have spoken to the guy at Deus.
Earlier in the season it was "Due to COVID" Nobody is in the repair centre at this time, call him back in a month or two.
When I called back it was I had to send everything in-but "Due to COVID" I better call in first before sending it in.....:icon_scratch::laughing7:

I'm putting up a large wooden sign (yet to made) hanging between the farm gate (yet to be installed).
The patch is going to be called "Brickyard Berries"

This farm gate is located along the highway and the patch is located on the flat at the other end of the field. There's been many inquiries already of what am I doing.
The sign is going up just to mess with the minds of of inquiring minds Bill.

The berries will be for our own use/and the like minded folks we have in a food circle.

So far I have put in 60 Haskaps-170 Raspberry. Still have 55-60 canes to plant today.

In the early spring there's 100 3yr old Blueberry plants to transplant, and a few hundred Strawberries plants.

Tired of driving hrs and hrs for our food, when i have the resources to have the food growing in my back yard so to speak.

Jim,

Based on our experience the birds go after red berries especially and we have to use netting to protect the berries after the fruit sets.

Jim,

I came across this article about raspberry production if you want to check it out.

https://www.mofga.org/Publications/The-Maine-Organic-Farmer-Gardener/Spring-2005/Raspberries

I didn't read the whole article yet Bill, but what I did its a :icon_thumright::icon_thumleft:. I want and need some of that purple ground cloth-fried has it in her garden-I'm a tad green.

Yes as you know we're at the whims of nature basically when it comes to growing naturally. Birds, Bugs, Billy, and Bucks all looking for a free meal-then again who can blame them.

Just said to the Mrs yesterday it takes 12 shovel full of digging/mixing/planting to set one plant.

The special care with the 2 yr olds-trying to give them a good start.

Berry patch=Birds

Trying to decide on the following:

Netting over single rows-rows are 160-175ft long

Just over single plants

Over the whole patch 200' x 200'

50 cats?:laughing7:

Propane cannon
Life size scarecrow of my own image :headbang: (Scary)

Running fishing line from post to post across the patch with little streamers off the line.

Well there's a little freezing rain, white glandular pellets, just finished raining. Skies are letting up, time to suck it up buttercup.
Have a great day everyone.

Hang over !! Ouch !!
