I thought this was interesting.

Have you ever wondered why we carve pumpkins?

"The jack-o’-lantern has a long history with Halloween, although our favourite demonic faces haven’t always been carved out of pumpkins. Their origin comes from an Irish myth about Stingy Jack, who tricked the Devil for his own monetary gain. When Jack died, God didn’t allow him into heaven, and the Devil didn’t let him into hell, so Jack was sentenced to roam the earth for eternity. In Ireland, people started to carve demonic faces out of turnips to frighten away Jack’s wandering soul. When Irish immigrants moved to the U.S., they began carving jack-o’-lanterns from pumpkins, as these were native to the region.

But how did jack-o’-lanterns become associated with Halloween? Halloween is based on the Celtic festival Samhain, a celebration in ancient Britain and Ireland that marked the end of summer and the beginning of the new year on November 1. It was believed that during Samhain the souls of those who had died that year travelled to the otherworld and that other souls would return to visit their homes.

In the 8th century CE, the Roman Catholic Church moved All Saints’ Day, a day celebrating the church’s saints, to November 1. This meant that All Hallows’ Eve (or Halloween) fell on October 31. Traditions from Samhain remained, such as wearing disguises to hide yourself from the souls wandering around your home. The folklore about Stingy Jack was quickly incorporated into Halloween, and we’ve been carving pumpkins–or turnips–ever since." - Cydney Grannan

The Roman Catholic Church moved a lot of the Holy days to or near pagan days . Supposed to be an attempt to wipe out the pagan days. That I can think of ( too early and not enough coffee) only Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday and Easter are according to the Biblical time frame. And the pagans have heavily influenced those holy days.

Morning AARC, pepperj, Dave and WD

Morning WD, Dave, ARC, Rook :hello:

Morning Rook... Bill... Pepper.

How are your chicken babies settling in Jim?
Safe and sound and all accounted for I hope.

Thanks for asking Dave

Slowly integrating the hen (Pips) to hang out with them. So each day they get the freedom out of the brooder room into the large room that have the roosts and nesting boxes. It's where the big boys play/eat/sleep :laughing7:

Yesterday I was telling the Mrs the chicks were out and about with Pips and all was good. This bold little girl came scooting over and delivered a chick peck right on Pips side-it got a Pips peck in return-chick took off faster than it ever had. Pecking order is interesting to view-some just take the peck and carry on-others try to stand their ground.

The yellow fuzzy down is being replaced by the brown pin feathers on the chicks. All seem to be active, and healthy-though going in and seeing all of them running around and seeing one laying under one of the brooder lights not moving makes us wonder if something is wrong. A little touch and it comes alive faster than the energizer bunny, just sacked out early.
