So... thinking of letting some things go that I have either no need for... too much of... in my way... or whatever.

Got stacks or old MD / treasure magazines dating back to I think 70's.... I did sell a ton of them many years ago but I kept like 100 of the best /favs... but I do not look at them anymore due to I know them front to back etc... they just sit.

Books.. oh man... I have Rubbermaid rough totes full... not to mention shelves of excess... doubles etc etc.

Nautical Charts... arrrrrrggg I sold over 100 again some years back... don't know how may I still own now... well over that... 99% Florida... would have to go through them.. I know I have lots of Bahamas etc... all dating back.

Maps... :)... I have em back to 1591 of Florida.. and have a few old of other places. these are pride and joy's and would take some real offers to part.

Other stuff... sheesh don't get me started.

Nautical stuff in general... everything from bamboo poles and wood lures to god knows what.... most of which I never see and is packed away due to NO SPACE to display.

Space is limited anymore... just time to part with some things I have had for eons... and I think many would enjoy and can display / collect in a better way.

Just thought I would throw this out there and see whats what.

I hear you ARC, cleaning up/dis-guarding 'things' we've kept from our past is one of the hardest things to do. :sadsmiley:
My wife is most definitely a 'closet hoarder', she keeps papers, notes to herself, ticket stubs to movies, plays and concerts she attended 20 years ago.

She has bookshelves full of paperback books, computer programming textbooks (now obsolete) and other papers that she read years ago but refuses to part with.
She then complains to me that she has no space to store her art supplies. :dontknow:

Her dresser drawers and closet are full of old clothes that she hasn't worn in years and refuses to donate.
Can you say OCD. :laughing7:

ARC,
It's never too late to donate, sell or start throwing out the 'stuff' we've collected over the years... we can't take it with us and it's not fair to shoulder this burden on our kids.

Donate... lol... I did not hoard all this crap all these years just to give it away. heh

I will have a yard sale and let it go for peanuts... errr or at least what I paid... IF I CAN remember what I paid. lol

That whole donate crap here sucks... they get it for free THEN SELL IT for inflated lame prices.... I will have no part in that.

The Salvation Army... what a joke they are.

Money making machine made up of multi millionaire corporate executives.

Thanks so am I, I feel like I've been in a dry spell lately though. :sadsmiley:
Isn't that always the way until the fields start to open up.

I don't think I've ever asked, what type of detecting do you do? :icon_scratch:

Bart, Jim, Bill and I seem to be the only guys on ARC's thread that talk about our hunts. :laughing7:

We bought 40 acres of a 163 acre farm. Upon digging into the history of the land, I found out that we have 40 acres of an original 80 acre farm, first land sale was 1832. The owner was a preacher and he set aside a little spot for the church cemetery. The church was located on the farm across the street, and owned by his brother. On the northern property line is remnants of an old road. People used to throw their trash off the side of the road. I have found some whole bottles and lots of broken glass, pottery, dishes, milk glass, a child’s shoe, a broken Mast lightening rod, hub cap I believe I was told it was from model A. Lots and lots there, but, the tornadoes that came last year has made it inaccessible to me.

Now, there was a barn that we had leveled, dug a hole, burned and buried. This was before I was into metal detecting. I detect that, NOW. That’s where I found my only silver, 1854 dime.
After owning the land for a few years, we discovered an old foundation. I learned from this site that you all refer to it as a cellar. There is a creek that runs between the barn area and the cellar. We kept finding bottles and glass in the creek.
Both of these areas are along my driveway . The 2 video links in my signature show the creek and the foundation. If you watch it, you can get a glimpse of groomed lawn on one side of the creek. That’s where the barn used to be. So, mostly just digging up history of the farm that I live on. Oh yeah, I walk the fields too. We have huge power lines that go through it, though.

The past couple of years I have been given permission to detect the campgrounds that we stay at. That is where I get my coin fix. Mostly clad, but I did find a couple wheats. Just this weekend, one of the owners told MR WD where one of their campers may have lost her ring and asked, ASKED, him to have me look for it! I didn’t have my detector with me, so it’s on the list.

I have been asked to look for another ring in a local field . Inexperience, lack of time and timing of the crops has been a hindrance for me. Oh, and the cold. I don’t do cold.
That’s about it.

Good morning Jim the missus harvested another batch of green tomatoes yesterday the count so far is 304 lbs.....:laughing7::laughing7::laughing7:

Still some more on the plants she hasn't uprooted and for lunch the next couple of days green tomato soup.....:laughing7::laughing7::laughing7:
The days of garden is looking tired now-we don't do any green tomato anything-The movie "Fried Green Tomato" was good though.
We have lots of green that will never ripen up now, as the days are shortened to the point of it's not going to happen.

If you have a simple recipe for Gren tomato soup-might be a first for us-pass it along Bill.

Hope you'z got your camp all tucked in over the weekend. Not sure if it's an easy or a many day endeavour.

Depends on the year. Usually we take all weekend end, but we had a funeral to go to last Friday. So, we left early Saturday morning with the trailer for the golf cart. We got it all buttoned up in a hurry and ready to be winterized. Now I have loads and loads of laundry. That will take a while. It’s like moving twice a year, once in and 6 months later, out. But my home fridge and pantry have lots of goodies added.

What’s what? Christmas is coming. You peeked my interest with wood lures. Make sure you let us know how/where to looky looky.

Dave your the other side of the coin it sounds like-get rid of it-clean clean-ducks in the row-everything has to be right on-now what do you call that?:laughing7:

My best day is opening up the 20" roll up door and letting somebody with the "Too Much Organized Order" look in and I can see the body language-they get squirrelled.
Your response was the best "Jim-Jim-what are you going to do with it all?:laughing7::notworthy: Loved it! You probably had nightmares for a week.......

Hey if I go to the storage shop and find something quickly I wear as a badge of honour I really do.

Your property sounds like it has a very interesting history WD. :occasion14:
That amount of land would certainly keep any detectorist busy for years to come.

"People used to throw their trash off the side of the road'. If you ever felt like spending time on your knees using a hand-held garden rake, I'd be willing to bet there are still more unbroken bottles left to find.

Isn't it interesting, how when we were younger we never really noticed the weather on a daily basis.
But now that we're older it seems to effect our every movement... excuse the pun. :laughing7:

Heh... I have some cool stuff... everything from wood reels to lures.

bbl... off to be a Wizard.

we can't take it with us and it's not fair to shoulder this burden on our kids.

Depends on the kids. I’ve got two turds that deserve every PITA thing I can leave them! For what they have, are, and will put me and MR WD through.

I’m off to. I have to go be a statistic today and get a covid test somewhere. Yay!

I found one of the best ways to help my wife and daughter de-clutter without pushing them was to have a garage sale on our driveway.
Mind you, we haven't done this in about 13 years now, so I think it's overdue.

I used to go to my local equipment rental store and rent a half dozen 8' folding tables for $12 each.
My wife would then advertise on her Facebook page for our Garage Sale, telling everyone what we had and when we were holding it.

I remember the first time we held this, we must've had 300+ people show up between 7am - 2pm.
The deal I had with my wife was... "anything that we took out of the house that didn't sell would be donated."

This worked like a charm for clearing out the junk/clutter.

It was a bit overwhelming when I saw all of the 'stuff' in your barn Jim.
I actually only had nightmares that one night... thank you very much. :laughing7:

My daughter and I both agree that people keep to much stuff and they don't know how to let go.
I don't get it why people actually go out and rent storage space to store their useless stuff, only to not tell their family because they're too embarrassed, then they die and the locker gets sold on some reality show.
Jim, read my lips... "you can't take it with you buddy", now put down that 8-track cassette player you keep because it's 'vintage' and get back to cleaning out the hen house. :laughing9:

Some good news on the job front, I've got two head-hunters calling me today for interviews!

The first interview is for a Territory Sales Rep to go around to all the seniors homes in Ontario and demonstrate how to put on and take off a new design of adult diaper.
My second interview is to be a Shopping Cart Retriever at our local Wal-Mart store.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'm qualified for either of these jobs... head-hunters, in my opinion they're just time-wasters! :laughing7:

Hope everyone has a good Monday!

Now you got the new job-pushing carts at your FAV store in a diaper.
Ok that isn't a good brain worm to be thinking of....get rid of that thought.

"we can't take it with us and it's not fair to shoulder this burden on our kids."

I read this and it makes me think actually in many ways.
Having both parents gone, came from a collecting everything family, my mother was a hoarder (apple didn't fall far from the tree) I called it the depression era syndrome. Where I heard the stories of hardship time and time again.
The waste of today is a curse in it's self, instead of reusing it, many throw it out, burn it (oh that one burns me) (nothing like a two-fold F U to the world) polluting the skies and waters-plus wasting it on top. Destroying it so no other can use it.
Oh it's easier to run down and buy another piece of crap.

OK back on topic...
Stuff and the kids and the burden.

Really?

Live one's life to the fullest-enjoy what you have earned and use-the kids don't care about anything-only the $$$ in the end. If you make life easy for the kid-what real chance has the kid in the real world-a cold hard world out there. But that comes from one last in line and having too kids to pick up after.

My mother was troubled over a great indifference bestowed on her and that was the recognition from her grandchildren for simple gifts and cards she sent to them. Zippo/replies except for one granddaughter. This troubled her-the threat of cutting them out of the will-oh the little things as a thank you Grandma-fell aside in their bust lives.

But the day of the reading-the paws were turned up to the sky-yet not a cent was a given to the ones that forgot.

Yes there was the house of organized hoarding-yet clean as a whistle. Oh the times-the laughter-the tears-the memories they all were-as each piece told a story, even to the tropical bird that was kept in the freezer-yup. :icon_scratch::laughing7:
But if there is no memories on the shelves-what is there to remember-nothing to remind us-what is life without a memory really.
We pass on-that is a given-but to start passing on before your time is only accelerating the time one has.

Some fear the end when the end isn't even near. They have the worry the clock is ticking away-before the clock hasn't begun to tick actually. I wonder about what about them-the worry about-leaving a mess-or a big pile of something. What really does that say about the ones that complain, that they feel slighted in having to work for the $$$. Oh the stuff-the stuff OMG!
The stuff-oh I'm sorry to the next in line-I shouldn't of burdened you-just cut you a cheque.:icon_scratch:
We have no kids-I have no family to speak of-the mrs family too far away-but we're not dead and we will make the lands a trust for the world to enjoy-the $$$ will make sure there's a caretaker to care for the trust.
But to part with my memories for someone else's gain-nope.
As my father said: Never owe another man a penny when you leave-that will ensure that no man will spit on your grave when they pass you by"
