Rook,

Well one thing I learned was not to b.s. the customers. Sometimes when the asked me to quote on business I would suggest they go to a competitor because we weren't in a position to quote a competitive price on it.

So by being honest with them and trying to help them get into new markets at a fair price I got my share of business and then some. The last 4 years I grew my account base from 5 million to 11 million which was way above the norm but with more business you create more work for yourself.

It kind of felt like running a marathon every day near the end.

I know what your talking about there bill. A few of my young competitors would come up to me and say, are you the Barnes guy. I would tell yes. They’d would say we sure are glad you’re retiring. Now maybe we can get some business out of this company. That was funny. I remember one young competitor bought my lunch on one accasion. That was fun. It was not that I was that great a salesman but that I was consistent in my travel and call schedule.

Dave,

Beautiful rosette it probably deserved to be up top. But you and probably most experienced detectorists recognize a unique find when they see one.

Thanks Bill,
I think anyone would be hard pressed to show me a similar rosette that's as personalized as this one is.
You can clearly see that it was originally silver-plated too.

Hey, all that matters is that I found it after the arkies left and prior to the site being developed for housing.

Here are a couple of pics of the site while the arkies were digging it... and to think they missed this piece. :laughing7:
The second pic is where the barn stood, the third is where the homestead was.

Tonight we'll be tossing a rib steak on the barbecue. I'll put together a pototo salad using our own potatoes and saute up some yellow beans from the garden. Should be a tasty supper!

Dave,

It doesn't surprise me that the arkies missed it. 90% of qualified finds in the UK are found by detectorists which explains the frictions between arkies and detectorists.

They use the excuse we're amateurs and don't use the proper protocol and methodology to document the finds, etc...
I've come to realize that's mostly pure b.s. we're considered unpaid competition and a threat to their jobs.

Most sites we detect have been disturbed over and over again such as plowed fields, urban green spaces, etc....so the whole strata or depth of the find is irrelevant which is a big part of their argument. My urban green spaces have more fill than a garbage disposal site....:laughing7::laughing7::laughing7:

Song to the Siren
Tim Buckley

Long afloat on shipless oceans
I did all my best to smile
'til your singing eyes and fingers
Drew me loving to your isle

And you sang:
"Sail to me
Sail to me
Let me enfold you"
Here I am
Here I am
Waiting to hold you

Did I dream you dreamed about me?
Were you hare when I was fox?
Now my foolish boat is leaning
Broken lovelorn on your rocks
For you sing:
'Touch me not, touch me not, come back tomorrow
O my heart, o my heart, shies from the sorrow'

I am puzzled as the oyster
I am troubled as the tide:
Should I stand amid your breakers?
Should I lie with death my bride?

Hear me sing
"Swim to me
Swim to me
Let me enfold you:
Here I am
Here I am
Waiting to hold you"

Good night TreasureNet Crew.
