You are:
The Animal!
You must have pretty good ears to pick out the slight tone difference between wheats and silver dimes!
VDI's 78+ all get dug!
Keep us posted!

TXTim:
The program I was running was pretty unstable and I am not proficient enough with the DFX yet to have adjusted it to compensate for the ground's VDI so I was actually using pinpoint to find targets and then doing slow sweeps to get a decent VDI and even then it was "twitchy" I would say. At one point I placed the merc and a wheat on the ground about 2ft apart and did an airtest and STILL I could hear a def. difference in tone between the two. The program was written by JerDFX who posts here and also on the DFXonly forum. I think I'm gonna stick to it for now, with the only change being that I plan on toggling DC phase "on" so I can get a ground VDI number before hunting and adjust the program accordingly to make it more stable.
Here's Jeremy's (JerDFX) program. I don't think he'd mind at all me posting it here along with comments base on what I learned:
TARGET VOLUME 48-63 63
AUDIO THRESHOLD 0-42 10
TONE 0-255 173
AUDIO DISC. ON/OFF ON
SILENT SEARCH ON/OFF OFF
MIXED-MODE ON/OFF OFF
AC SENSITIVITY 1-85 81 Note...this is pretty high-bringing it down a notch or two probably would've calmed it down
DC SENSITIVITY 1-60 45 I bumped this up which made pinpointing a bit sharper
BACKLITE 0-6 0
VIEWING ANGLE 1-50 25 I increased this a lot to help compensate for the cold weather, as the display slowed way down
RATCHET PINPOINT ON/OFF OFF
S.A.T. SPED 0-10 10
TONE ID ON/OFF ON
V.C.O. ON/OFF ON
MODULATION ON/OFF OFF
AUTOTRAC ON/OFF ON
TRACK VIEW ON/OFF OFF
AUTOTRAC SPEED 1-20 8
AUTOTRAC OFFSET -10 +20 0
TRACK INHIBIT ON/OFF ON
COARSE G.E.B. 0-255 Auto
FINE G.E.B. 0-255 Auto
DISC. EDIT -95-+95 Accept -40 to +95
BLOCK EDIT -95-+95 Reject -95 to -41
LEARN ACCEPT ON/OFF OFF
LEARN REJECT ON/OFF OFF
RECOVERY SPEED 1-40 28
BOTTLECAP REJECT 1-20 1
HOT ROCK REJECT 0-20 10
SWEEP SPEED 1-20 7
GROUND FILTERING 2-6 4
VISUAL DISC. ON/OFF OFF
ICONS ON/OFF OFF I switched this on, as I am not familiar enough with VDI numbers yet
V.D.I.SENSITIVITY 0-99 85
DC PHASE ON/OFF OFF I think I will be using this now to check the ground's VDI and adjust accordingly
GRAPH AVERAGING ON/OFF ON
GRAPH ACCUMULATE ON/OFF ON
FADE RATE 1-14 11
PREAMP GAIN 1-4 4 This also might have been reduced and it would've calmed the thing down
2 FREQUENCY (BEST DATA) ON/OFF-ON
2 FREQUENCY (CORRELATE) ON/OFF-OFF
VDI NORMALIZED ON/OFF ON
1 FREQUENCY (3kHz) ON/OFF OFF
1 FREQUENCY (15khz) ON/OFF OFF

great work question on coil.........>>>

Dan great pictures, I have dug some chunks too this winter in Illinois! But mine did not yield silver fantastic! But I did notice one thing....your DFX has the older model coil!<Did you buy new? Just wondering....The coil was replaced to make more environment friendly or something like that. It does not have the letters DFX on it the way the older coils(the one you have) does. I believe they are basically the same but if you bought new, you might want to ask your dealer, hopefully your dfx was not laying around a long time in stock! Picture of new search coil, been out since at least last year. http://www.whiteselectronics.com/dfxw.php

Re: First silver for the DFX-High tones and low temps at the Iceberg

Nice stuff Dan.

Wish I was out about right now. I have weathered some bad winters to get out. But not this yr for some reason. I guess there starting to catch up with me now.

The people at ST are awesome. I got the same headphones and they work great. Great place and people to do business with.

My Dad, also uses the ace250. Great detector for the price. But even he is blow away at how quick accurate and well the dfx performes. There is a difference from a 200.00 unit and a 1000.00 unit.

The dfx makes it alot easier. You can tell the differences between items alot easier. I've been using it for 6 yrs straight. I have found alot of treasure. Probably enough to buy about 20 more dfxs.

I would like whites to come out with another top of the line. I'm ready to learn a new unit. I love the 1400 DD coil on the dfx also. Worth the 200.00 id your a serious hunter.

Your gonna do great with that unit. Good luck to you. I don't blame you for going out in this weather. The dfx is the Cadillac of detectors.

No, I bought the unit on Ebay. The original owner bought it to find an expensive ring lost hunting and never used it again. The thing is spotless...not a scratch on it anywhere...even the coil. AND I saved about $400 on a new unit.

Re: First silver for the DFX-High tones and low temps at the Iceberg

Dan,
Great post. Only thing that would have made it better is if I were there to photograph you standing in waist deep snow! ;D I'm glad you were rewarded for your efforts. Silver is very distinctive on the DFX and Exp II. Only trouble is that it takes some of the fun out of digging - knowing before you dig that it is going to be a penny rather than silver. But then the fun is calling the silver coin before you dig it.

Didn't quite get my taxes done but got a lot of other stuff done. I'm not going out there today as much as Nate want's to go. It'll wait a week or two.

Thanks Jeremy!...check out my post above concerning your DFX program and the few changes I made and let me know what you think!

I just bought on Ebay last night a 5" DD Excelerator coil for the DFX too...I have heard great things about it. Can't hurt to have I thought, especially around trash and for cellar holes, etc.

Re: First silver for the DFX-High tones and low temps at the Iceberg

Just wanted to make sure someone did not pull a switch a roo on you Dan! I heard there really is no difference though. Just what i stated before. Your pictures make everyone who can't go out, want to go out right now I am sure! I am working on a real simple sling to help on hills. I know there is a swingy thingy and ez harness on the market both $30 or more....but I am making one with two bungee cords and a luggage strap all found in the house for free! Will post under equipment accessory area or somewhere when done, removes weight from hand and arm. Up to now during my test I have been using one to two fingers to support...maybe no more death grip for me!

Don't know if that would take any fun out of it for me Bob...in fact...hearing that high tone and thinking that it might be silver would just get me MORE excited.
I think you guys should give it a go. You can walk back in the path I created through the snow!...will be easier that way.
As to the photo op missed, if it weren't for you being there I wouldn't have my avatar...so I understand completely :D

Re: First silver for the DFX-High tones and low temps at the Iceberg

Anyone with that much stamina and determination is an animal.....no danimal! :o Excellent silver by the way. If I had done all that in one day I would be in a room at the hospital right now! Looks like the old DFX is really talking to you. Communicating wth your detector is the best hunting method of all! Monty

Re: First silver for the DFX-High tones and low temps at the Iceberg

Move over Abominable Snowman, the man has a DFX in his hands and he's gonna use it.

They must have raised coin plants in that region you're hunting. It's huge temptations like this, new DFX and a coin field that make detectorist hard core.

Don't freeze any appendages I don't care how sweetly that DFX says... "Oh, Dan"

Thanks for the wonder winter adventure, I really enjoyed your post.

Danimal! your eather addicted to metal detecting or simply nuts ? I on the other hand , use a snow blower to clear the area I want to detect ;D

I'd have to clear cut quite a few trees first to be able to get a snow blower through this area (but it's an idea!)
As far as the addiction scenario (or the nutjob one too) I think you are pretty close. ;D

Catsman,
I got your PM, and we'll hook up for sure sometime. I live in Cuyahoga Falls, so Canton's not far away from me. In fact, not long ago I used to go to Canton to race slot cars at Mark's Model World right near the Football HOF.
I'll reply to the PM with my phone number. Call and we'll BS for a bit.
Dan
