100 Year Old Coin Purse Gives Up the Silver!

Happy Wednesday T-Net Nation!

I was out hunting a very overgrown picnic area this afternoon, and swung over the remains of a 100 year old coin purse. There was very little of the purse left, but it contained a collection of 13 coins, ranging in date from 1909- 1919. The two SLQ's were actually fused together, as you can see in the pictures




The total included: 2 SLQ's, 1914 Barber quarter, 1909 Liberty nickel, 1 Buffalo nickel, and 8 wheaties ( 1911, 1914, 1914, 1914, 1918, 1919, 1919, and 1919). I was super excited about this find, especially given the three silver quarters!

On my way back to the car, I also managed a 1944 Merc, and a 1911-D Barber quarter



The quarter is in great shape, and turns out to be a semi key date, with only 933,000 minted!

All in all a fantastic day for me. Not sure how many hunts will be left in 2024, but if this turns out to be the last one...I couldn't be happier!

my amortization table says that is over $17 dollars of purchasing power today compared to 1919. Someone was unhappy they dropped that!

Yes, at the time this purse was lost the money would have bought a fair amount of groceries. I'm sure whoever lost it was quite upset.

Wow that's a fantastic find. Did it give you kind of a broken signal as it looks like iron in the mix ?

Thanks detectorguy. The signal was pretty solid, but the VDI was only an "83" on my Deus 2. All those pennies and two nickels really dragged the number down. I wasn't expecting to see any silvers in the hole. For me, a silver quarter is usually in the 94-95 range. A very happy surprise!

I recall loosing one of these packed with nickels, dimes and quarters probably around 1965-66 in Kewanee, IIL. Very likely back then it have silver in it if not all?. It wasn't until the maybe later 60s, my friend said his dad told him we need to start hanging on to all those pre-64 dimes, quarters and half's. I never took that advance all that seriously as I thought they'll all be around for a long time and I always spent the money I had back then.

First of all imagine the distress the person felt when they realized they had lost it That was no small amount of money during that time frame Even now in 2024 I sometimes think of $20'00 as no big deal it just $2.. is But just as often I think af$20.00 As more than I am willing to spend for the item I am thinking i want ADD in the fact that now $20'00 is about a normal hourly wage Back then It was a weekly wage or more And what if someone had spent along period time saving money so they could take a special person to an event and treat their companion to a day to remember only to have lost the purse The coins them selves are A good representation of what would be in a purse and carried in one's pocket And the reason I am responding to this thread is because i once located evidence that there had been ongoing human activity Maybe iron ore mining or logging I found a number of horse shoes old logging tools a small dump of glass bottles And near that dump was several pieces of an old purse like the one you have pictured It occurred to me at a later time a broken purse could have become lost with money in it. So I have been looking for old money may be going on 8 years off and on ' I am confident there is some there It was at the start just a small dump than when I found the ax head splitting wedges horse shoes and other items that people had spent a large amount of time there And it was a place where business was done The dump/outhouse had bottles that included medicine bottles whiskey and soda bottles It was a tiny place in the middle of nowhere l that was a key part of how the local people lived their daily l lives iI enjoyed your post it makes me think I can also find a few old pieces of sliver r tangled n the tree roots ud and broken bottles where they have been hiding for more than a hundred yeas
