WARNING: This post contains a little rant that may or may not be suitable for all audiences. It is not anyone's view or opinion other than my own.

What makes a good group hunt? What makes me want to keep coming to these hunts?

What makes a large group of people from disparate walks of life want to drive for hours and many many miles, to walk out into a field, a dried up creek bed, or some similar detecting site and dig? Is it merely the promise of unseen treasures? Is it the chance to find that magic token hidden in the ground by the huntmaster? Or the chance for a raffled prize? If it is, then I feel sorry for you. I really do.

You see the true treasure of an organized hunt is all around you during the hunt. It's standing and sharing "war" stories about a tough target you recovered, the time you broke your unbreakable digger trying to pry out a cooked memorial cent, arguing over whose detector is bigger and better than the other. It's not about the prizes or the finds, and if it is you should probably examine your outlook on life a little more. Oh sure I want to dig a seated dime, or an awesome button, or even a Civil War Union Officers spur but that's not what it's all about.

It's about a man and his family who opened their hometown, their home and even their hearts for a group of, at the beginning, a group of total strangers. Countless hours go into organizing a hunt and a lot of headache comes along with it. Add to that the challenge of providing a place to hunt that holds the promise of a few good finds and providing food for a small army, and that in and of itself is enough. To the man and his family that hold this hunt and have held it for three previous times, my hat is off to you. I cannot say thank you enough.

I may not leave here with anything in my finds pouch worthy of display or any cash value but I am leaving with at least one treasure I didn't have when I came a new firend or two.

If you have somewhere else to be there's the door. If you don't enjoy hunting with all of us here in Caldwell, there's the door. Just do me a favor and try to remember before you start yelling out instructions to hurry up and move on because you want to leave, most of are spending what precious little time with firends that we can before our busy hectic lives take back over. And we want to be here. In the grand scheme of things you are a guest at this hunt and you should act like a guest who wants to be invited back, not some self-centered unappreciative, loud mouthed annoyance

Sir, I don't think it could have been said any better....I love these get togethers, and I love to hunt and dig with all of these great people who I have come to know over the past 3 or 4 years....It really is the best part of it all...the hanging out with everybody...Stan, and his family really kicks the ass out on these hunts, and I will keep coming as long as he has them....

THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS HUNT WHAT IT IS.

The kind of hunt I put on is only successful by the quality of people who attend. We had great people this year. Every year it is sad for me to see you leave. Your smiles and laughter are priceless to me. I would like to thank ME22 for the gifts from Garrett, and Minelab. RR for organization and Mentalgranny for making us wonder how many days is really left. :) Graytcote ( Indian Nations Detectors) Steve in Missouri and all the others who donated this year. They gave us a lot good prizes this year thanks. Thank you for the great memories and new friends I have made. Please be safe going back home.

Next Years Chisholm Trail Hunt????

We all know how much work it is to put on one of these events and Burdie has put on 4 of them now. It is no secret that Burdie would like someone to step up and organize one of these so he can go to it and not have to worry about all the logistics of making sure everyone has a good time.

I have been toying with the idea of putting on the next one but I wanted to make sure people are still interested once I tell you my plans.

The previous Chisholm Trail Hunts have all been held in Caldwell, KS which is a small town and has limited tourist activities. My idea is to hold the next hunt at the end of the Chisholm Trail in Abilene, KS. I know a lot of the history for Abilene and have even made a few contacts with owners of property on the south side of the town where the cattle would be driven in to the stock yards. The same farmer also owns the county fairgrounds that were used in later part of the 1800's.

I know Abilene would be a bit further drive for a lot of people but I think with the history and the ties to the Chisholm trail it might make for a good hunt/weekend.

Let me know what you think and if enough people are interested and Burdie doesn't mind me running next years event I will start setting it up.

You can check out the Abilene, KS website for more information on this area at: http://www.abilenecityhall.com/

Here is some history on Abilene: http://www.kansascattletowns.org/abilene/abilene_history.html

Don

Please don't take my offer of a hunt in Abilene the wrong way. I was just thinking outloud after hearing rumors of this being the last CTH and how Burdie wished someone else would step up to plan the next one. I picked Abilene because it is only a 2 hour drive for me and I have friends that live there and I know the farmer who owns most of the land south of town. If Burdie or someone else wants to put the next CTH together thats fine with me, I just don't want what Burdie started to end.

Totally understandable, and whoever puts on the next one, Erika and I will be there! Wouldn't miss it for anything! Would for sure drive the extra way to see everyone, and to do a bit of hunting!

What a blessed trip....you folks are pulling some history out of that hard, hard ground....sure wish we could have made it there with y'all but seeing all the neat stuff is just about the same as being there with you. Take care and really check each other for those ticks....they can really be problematic.

Well, I'll just send some pictures instead of stopping by as I go home............. :) ;D :laughing9: :love4: Tell your hubby I think CTH4 was the best hunt yet!

Hoping Ron sets up another Uvalde hunt soon too!

Bobbie! I'd sure love to get in some beach hunting this year before it gets too cool. Hopefully all is well with you and your property after the storm.
Sorry you weren't here, I was looking forward to seeing you and twisting your arm for a water/beach hunt.............. :) All in favor say AYE!

Don, how soon is CTH6? Not that I need more hunting or anything.................... I think I only had my coil on the ground for about 2 hrs the entire weekend............ :) but I truly had a blast. Thank you Stan and Vicki you're great great folks, I don't care what the rest say....! ;D

You guys and your ticks.... Can't find a woman interested in checking me for ticks or even one that will let me check her. LOL Alternatives will NOT be entertained.

Re: The CTH4 hunt will be held September 3,4 & 5th in Caldwell.

Sitting here in the hotel room at South Haven. We are leaving tomorrow morning and I thought I would put up a post before going to bed. Stan, we had so much fun. Truly enjoyed seeing everyone who has become family to me and will profoundly miss you all. I wish you all were in my life outside of the CTH hunts....but for now I will settle for that.

The weather today was absolutely beautiful! The hunt ended with us sitting in the shade talking and enjoying the unseasonably cool weather. What a great day. God Bless you Stan and Vickie.

Pictures are of my new friend Texwolf (Darrell) and old friend Mastereagle (Larry) doing what we did all weekend...laughing our a$$es off.

Re: The CTH4 hunt will be held September 3,4 & 5th in Caldwell.

How much fun was that???? Man I can't wait for next year. I have hunted several times with Burdie and it was always fun, but this was awesome. Made a lot of new friends and can't wait till next year. I will try and get a water truck to water down the ground next time. Lol Congrats to the Seated finders and Sharp on the Barber Half, to Chuck on the Oklahoma territory token and the gals for creek finds. Actually to all really to many to remember, cause there were many. Again I had a blast. Thanks for the new friendships. Can't wait to see you all again. If your ever near Southern Oklahoma give me a shout.
I found several wheats and a Oklahoma tax token at the Sheriff's homeplace. Got permission in a nearby yard and found this along with some more wheats.

I ended up giving them to the landowner. She is going to purchase an Ace 250 and a propointer soon. She used a borrowed detecter from Bill_USA(thanks friend) and had a blast. I missed my chance two houses down had permission didn't have enough time to get back.

The girls and I made it home ok..laughed all the way because of all the funny stuff that we recalled from Caldwell....Mental Granny and Jacob follewed us out and it was really sad when we saw them turn toward Poinca City. Sorry we werent able to say goodby to all our loved ones ...but we did drive to Burdies and downtown and the Sr.Center..trying to find you all before leaving. This hunt was one of the best ever..due to the friendships formed and renewed blessings of just seeing everyone together once more. Again..it went to fast, but will see you all soon. Was so happy that Monty was able to visit and was nice catching him at Red Barn before he left....Thanks to all the wonderful people who attended who made this trip so memorable....Love you all

Re: The CTH4 hunt will be held September 3,4 & 5th in Caldwell.

From a new guy...

This was my first organized hunt since I started metal detecting 3 or so months ago.

I must say I was blown away by the friendliness and good nature of all the people who attended this event. I laughed often and was made to feel welcome. The feeling of family was thick in the air and Burdie, well, Burdie is a class act.

I learned first and foremost, that the real treasure is the company of people who share this passion for disturbing soil in search of history. I met many wonderful people and the food was most excellent.

Even though I was only able to attend for one day, I left wishing that I had another opportunity to experience this hunt again. I am extremely happy to hear that CTH5 may happen and that there may be another hunt in Abilene. You can most definitely count me in.

David.

The coin or token, and number tag are from the first site and the toy gun grip is from the islands. It looks like there maybe an eagle on the brass token but it's hard to tell since it is worn. I used soapy water and a nylon bristle brush to clean with but I don't want to damage it.

Re: The CTH4 hunt will be held September 3,4 & 5th in Caldwell.

O yeah,Lance and I and Dixie are home at 1030am.Have put away my 6 garters.I could not believe the three or four gunny sacks of old bottles some well known gals were trapsing out with from the creekbed and all the other stuff they found. But I'll leave all of that to their posts. It was really, really heartwarming the way we were greeted and tricked,I mean treated. All of that group is just super and yes the casino was kind to me for a change.Monty you are looking great,my friend but was disappointed that I didn't see that blue-checked shirt.I did find a Alabama tax token but threw it away since there wasn't anyone to give it to.Old River is going to attemp to clean up what may be a piece of a shotgun barrel and a piece of a rifle barrel?that Gunsmoke found and didn't think they were anything,he even found a piece of smoothe wood with them but threw that away!
Have they called my number yet,101,101?Hey I'm too tired for this right now, maybe more later,oh,in regards to Mastereagle's long post above, let me know a little sooner and I will get some sugar from the restaurant and make that guy a little sugar titty to soothe him.Anybody have an old blowup doll, maybe with a couple of bicycle patches on it we could give the next one?
Sure did miss a couple of special people,it would have been icing on the cake for sure.
