You see the true treasure of an organized hunt is all around you during the hunt. It's standing and sharing "war" stories about a tough target you recovered, the time you broke your unbreakable digger trying to pry out a cooked memorial cent, arguing over whose detector is bigger and better than the other. It's not about the prizes or the finds, and if it is you should probably examine your outlook on life a little more. Oh sure I want to dig a seated dime, or an awesome button, or even a Civil War Union Officers spur but that's not what it's all about.

It's about a man and his family who opened their hometown, their home and even their hearts for a group of, at the beginning, a group of total strangers. Countless hours go into organizing a hunt and a lot of headache comes along with it. Add to that the challenge of providing a place to hunt that holds the promise of a few good finds and providing food for a small army, and that in and of itself is enough. To the man and his family that hold this hunt and have held it for three previous times, my hat is off to you. I cannot say thank you enough.

You said it!

It reminds me just how much I'm missing by not being there. Pictures, folks! And hugs to everybody

Nan

Amen! You have no idea how much I miss seeing you all! Get out there and make some memories....then tell us about it!
Looks like Alden and WSD are dreaming of making memories. :D Did WSD maybe fall asleep in line? 97, 98, 99, 100, 101......101.....101...Ron....isn't that your number? :laughing7:
Nana :hello:

Re: The CTH4 hunt will be held September 3,4 & 5th in Caldwell.

I agree with Mastereagle 100%. I even got up off my death bed just to drive up and spend the morning with friends who I dearly enjoy and love. Well, not quite on my death bed and I must admit I exaggerated a bit. LOL! But the doctor did give me the Ok to drive up and see everyone and spend the morning. I had a great time even though I could not get down and dig and get dirty like the majority. Stan and I made it up for me to drive in unexpected and surprise everyone. And everyone genuinely seemed to enjoy that I could make it. Now that is true friendship. I only wish I could have stayed longer. I didn't really get to say goodbye to everyone as I would have wished. I started to get fatigued after spending a spell in the heat and I was warned by my doctor not to over do it. So I sneaked off to the Red Barn for lunch and had a good visit with some of the Wild Bunch at the restaurant before I left. I was especially taken by Gypsy Heart who had a great day hunting down in the creek bed. She found some neat old coins and a gold ring. She was thrilled as I was for her. Stan didn't know much history about the hunt site, but undoubtedly that proves that treasure is where you find it. I found it by just driving up and meeting with some of my great friends! And yes, that's what it's all about. Monty

Hey! that 101 thingy, sure it's just a cow tag? I'm sure others at the hunt know more about that number than I do, but it would be cool to hear some follow up on it...Are y'all enjoying the change in weather? :hello2: Looks like you got some rain last night.....?

I sent an email to the VP at the 101 Ranch and he said it may be an equipment tag, but he's not sure. He is forwarding the email and pic to the president of the assoc. at the 101. Hopefully we will hear back soon with a little more information.

Re: The CTH4 hunt will be held September 3,4 & 5th in Caldwell.

Next Years Chisholm Trail Hunt????

We all know how much work it is to put on one of these events and Burdie has put on 4 of them now. It is no secret that Burdie would like someone to step up and organize one of these so he can go to it and not have to worry about all the logistics of making sure everyone has a good time.

I have been toying with the idea of putting on the next one but I wanted to make sure people are still interested once I tell you my plans.

The previous Chisholm Trail Hunts have all been held in Caldwell, KS which is a small town and has limited tourist activities. My idea is to hold the next hunt at the end of the Chisholm Trail in Abilene, KS. I know a lot of the history for Abilene and have even made a few contacts with owners of property on the south side of the town where the cattle would be driven in to the stock yards. The same farmer also owns the county fairgrounds that were used in later part of the 1800's.

I know Abilene would be a bit further drive for a lot of people but I think with the history and the ties to the Chisholm trail it might make for a good hunt/weekend.

Let me know what you think and if enough people are interested and Burdie doesn't mind me running next years event I will start setting it up.

You can check out the Abilene, KS website for more information on this area at: http://www.abilenecityhall.com/

Here is some history on Abilene: http://www.kansascattletowns.org/abilene/abilene_history.html

Good idea Duo! Not that much farther, and for new hunting grounds too! Round 'em up, move 'em out . . .

Re: The CTH4 hunt will be held September 3,4 & 5th in Caldwell.

Update from the hunt: Day two is now officially behind us. And let me tell you something. GOD smiled on us yesterday. You could feel it in the nice breeze the awesome temperatures the sun and especially the ground at the hunt sites Burdie had line up for us.

The finds started coming out almost immediately. I saw Indian Heads, Mercs, Silver Rosies, heard tales of some silver barbers and even got to hold, for the first time ever, a Barber Half. I think a lot of people were finding a lot of stuff and the hunting was as close to perfect as you could get.

BB, my hunting partner and friend (shhhh don't tell him I called him that) found a token that it truly awesome and then we got to see Stan in action with his E-trac for a few minutes. That was a treat because I can only imagine how difficult it would be to have such an opportunity to hunt with so many friends and not being able to out of a sense of duty and responsibility to the landowner and the event participants. Way to go Stan!!!

In my opinion, one of the coolest finds was a watch fob that was found dated 1911. That fob is a thing of pure beauty and would be awesome on display in anyone's collection.

I did dig this crazy nail that is zigzag like a lightning bolt, strangest thing I ever dug. I labeled that one "Roswell Born's Treasure" I just hope I can hang on to it long enough to get it to her..... ::)

I was hoping for a tax token for particular someone else I know but I didn't manage to snag one. I heard someone did but I never got to see it.

Well the final day of hunting is here and while I'm excited to get out and get back to hunting I'm sad too. The event is winding down and soon it will be time to head home with the memories of the fun times and the treasures we have all found.

I don't really care where next year's hunt is. I will try to make it anywhere it is held as long as my friends are there to hunt with me.

Re: The CTH4 hunt will be held September 3,4 & 5th in Caldwell.

"Roswellborn's Treasure"

Awwwww.... :love5:

Y'know, reading ME's post made me realize that the treasure is already found - the friendships made in past meetups and hunts - and even through this hunt I've made friends - I just haven't met 'em yet (in person).

Hoping the zigzag nail makes it through, but not gonna fuss if it doesn't. You guys... you lot *are* the treasure for me.

I may be bummin' cuz I'm not there, but I'm mighty blessed.

DIG ON!!!

Nan

Mental Granny took some awsome pics of everyone, but left her computer at home. I posted a slide show of pictures that she took. You can view them at this link . . . http://cth4.gunsmoke.me

Re: The CTH4 hunt will be held September 3,4 & 5th in Caldwell.

I have provided an offline response to Don, but I want to encourage each participant (including past particpants that were not here for this one) to provide feedback to Don. His is an honest effort to continue the group hunts, along the same theme of CTH and to make additional facilities available for the A$$ to attend while we are pounding the dirt. It would allow Stan to finally hunt.

Please respond to Don either offline via PM if you wish like I did, or here on the forum. This should be a group consensus for sure.

Ultimately only Don will know the consensus since I'm sure some other responses will be offline.

Thanks Gunsmoke for all the photo work you've been doing during this hunt. I've watched you patiently working through all the photos to make the selections you have posted. Nice piece of work.

Re: The CTH4 hunt will be held September 3,4 & 5th in Caldwell.

No problem Bill. I hope everyone enjoys. Especially those that could not make it this year. I think once everyone gets back home, more pics will show up. I hope so anyway. I know there were a lot of great finds I haven't seen yet!

WOW!

MG that is super! Gunsmoke I would BUY a copy of that slideshow if you'd make the CD. That is what I think this group is all about just friends being friends.

Please consider taking the time during one or more of your minor drives, making a master CD and sending it to me. I'd be willing to make individual copies for each person requesting one. But, Lance, if you find the time to do it, I'd rather be touring............. :)

LOL didn't realize how short Stan is till I saw the slide of Steve making the presentation!

Have a great day y'all, and see you in the dirt!

Re: The CTH4 hunt will be held September 3,4 & 5th in Caldwell.

Flattery will get you everywhere! Ok. I'll have a few days once I get home, and I will put together a 'better' slideshow, with more pics. I will post it on-line so anyone who wants a copy can download it. No charge. These are pictures of everyone, and everyone should share in the enjoyment. But, I did not make the cattle drive today, and i know I don't have everyone's pics, so, stop by the Motel 6 sometime today, rm 119, and let me get any pics you want included, or you can email them to me. PM me for the address. I'm not going to try and make multiple copies of the show and mail them out, but I will post it for download. When finished, I'll post a link on 'Mental Granny's' slide show page. Sure has been great seeing everyone again, and I sure hope some of you will forward me your pictures.

Didn't find the link, just a service...did I miss a special button?

Hmmm, well, it is a FLASH slide show. If you are on a MAC, or do not have FLASH installed, then you won't see it. Give me a little while and I'll see if I can throw an HTML slideshow together for those that don't support FLASH.

Thanks Lance that's great. A Special thanks to Mental Granny for getting such great photos of everyone, and thanks to the rest of the photo suppliers that will make the final cut. This will be a special memory for me. Probably run the slide show on my 46" LCD TV as a silent background! (I don't watch TV normally.)

Well it's the thought that counts, ME. :-* Looking forward to more stories and PICS! I do hope all the girls gave extra hugs for Nana. Safe driving home.
