new to detecting and have been researching a cw skirmish. Have tried to find site for days. Lots of modern bullets but today found some lead that may indicate i'm near? the three small balls were all found together and the other two pieces were seperate. Is this a fired cw bullet?
thanks for any help.

Are there any rings on the sides? I canā€™t see any in the pic. If not Iā€™d say itā€™s an enfieldā€¦..which very likely to be csa.

Donā€™t know sizes of the small balls, resemble buckshot. 3 in one spot could indicate a buck and ball load, but Iā€™m not good enough to confirm if they were from 1863 or 2023. One noteā€¦.the patina on the buckshot (if it is buckshot) isnā€™t as white as the conical bullet. That can indicate a different/later lead alloy. However the conditions where they were found also impact patina.

thanks so much. went back out today. lots of modern bullets and some weird things. one bullet looks same age but is smaller than the first but does have rings/grooves. also a brass/bronze thing with a cable attachmt-no idea what it is and a round plate like metal that is heavy but barely magnetic. (?top of oil filter?). any ideas? thanks

Before reading the replies .

I will assume / guess it ...................or better stated It looks like a Fired Enfield Variant , & The round balls "look " to be .54 & the bottom one possibly a .58 ?

If a Skirmish site , the fired Bullets indicate you may be close as you stated .

Good luck on future scouting .

Great wording in your answer . " Can " , " could " , " Conditions " .

IMO
It "looks' like all pictured bullets here are post Civil War , but it's good to get them out of the way , as for the Iron , it could be anything , the Brass piece look Old & resembles part of a Key . Again 'IMO'

Congratulations on all those finds! Thanks for sharing.
