Swamp Gold

Bigdogdad, I don't know that their is gold buried there. Honestly, I am from South Florida and live here, and so I have read up on the treasure legends. This has been one of them. Other than the articles from the 1940's I have not seen anything earlier that points to buried treasure in the glades. I keep searching.

If nothing else, I would think just from what is most probable, I would think the Indians got gold from the spanish and/or US from the wars, battles, etc. They may have buried it as a way to protect it. Just a thought. Others, like ECS and Bigcypresshunter have known of these things far longer than I, for me, I am relatively new to this hobby and the history of any treasure, so I have to remain a bit skeptical yet optimistic.

I have located a Report of the Secretary of the Treasury, dated 1864, but that would be too early right? We would need 1865 or later?
We dont know the date. It could be 1864. I think one account listed in as 1864.

One interesting story, which I can find little information about, regarding buried gold, possibly near the everglades, and indians (seminoles) is "Treasure Spot":

Exploring Florida Documents: Pageants
It has treasure, Indians, Everglades, and a river but I think its too far away. Here is an Everglades map from 1880 and here 1860 and today.
Ecological Impacts of Climate Change: The Southeast

Miami River was the entrance to the Everglades (red arrow)from Fort Dallas now Miami but its mostly covered in concrete now and the river dug into a canal. I circled the area near Horseshoe Head. If it was cattle money, they would be following Seminole War trails west of Lake Okeechobee down into the Big Cypress/Everglades region.

I think its too far away to be the same legend and it doesnt mention Confederates but its interesting.

Yep, two down one to go. I have said from the begining that I am not that concerned about who buried the gold. I am only concerned about digging in the place where I think the gold is. If it is found there may be clues with it that could be used to determine how it got there. To be honest, it is VERY possible the indians had something to do with it.

It's kind of ironic that Bigcypresshunter put part of the name for the gold location in a prior post. Waiting to hear from ECS.

They are a lot of prior posts on this thread..

It was within your answer. You will see. Nite. Nite.

well if you mean Horseshoe Head, thats already the top likely answer for where the treasure may be based on the info.

One thing I know for sure, that if there was treasure, they knew the place was a wet swamp, and would bury it on high ground. If they buried it where the water would go, they would know they may not be able to track back to it. And of coarse thats part of the story that it was on high ground. Horseshoe Head is big, not easy to get to/and around on without an airboat.

He said part of the name, so it may be horse, head, or fort. I hope its not Fort Shackleford.

None of those was in your answer to my question. Where is ECS when you need him?

Ok thats a clue. I guess you are referring to my answer from your last question to me? I dont know where ECS is.

Military? Military trail?

I think there is some truth to the legend but like you say it gets different over the years. I am trying to seperate fact from fiction.

I was very excited to find the 1949 newsclippings only a week ago. I will be much happier when I find the military records.

The story is feasable and it supposedly was given to JP Harvey from the historical society. He lived in Davie Florida which is in Broward County. We are working on this now but research takes time.

So the answer is yes but I am a dreamer and lover of the Everglades and I want to believe. I want to believe so much that it may be clouding my brain. If I thought the answer was no, I would have not have started this thread.

UNC-Chapel Hill Library Call Numbers

I will look for it, if you have the actual name of the document i can likely get it.

The files on my site, files 40575586 and 40578571 both have some accounts of the final appropriation of CSA funds
Report on the condition of the treasury department Call # 1179 Conf
The Treasury of the Confederate States 1861-1865 Call # So.Pam. 5387
Report of the Secretary of the Confederate States of America Nov 7,1864 Call# 1186 Conf
Also :
"THE REBEL AND THE ROSE,James A Semple,Julia Gardiner Tyler And The Lost Confederate Gold",by Wesley Millett,1939. (This an early research book exploring this issue, and created interest in the lost CSA treasury)

ECS and Signal---Answer my question as to whether you believe there may be gold buried in the Everglades. If you both answer it truthfully I will give up the name of the site where I think the gold is buried. You too Bigcypresshunter. After all the research so far, do you think the gold is somewhere to be found?
I dont know if you missed it ESC but BigDogDad asked us a question. In turn he has promised to give up the name to his site.

Where is ECS when you need him?
Doing more historical research.
Now ,Bdd,if you had read my first post on this thread, you would already have known, that I know that part of the Confederate treasury made it to Florida, and I related my thoughts on its disbursement.
Did CSA gold make it to the Everglades-I don't know, that is why i have been researching the possilbility of this ever happening.
From my research,it appears that this legend first came to light in the 1940's,and has been repeated over and over again in treasure books.I would like to discover an earlier source for this legend.
There is quite a gap between believing and knowing, and I am pragmatic in my beliefs.
QUID PRO QUO

ECS- I am going to assume that you mean you are practical in your beliefs. I asked if you thought there "may" be gold. I also assume that you are not doing all this research for the heck of it. I quess what I shoud have asked was whether you are trying to find proof that the gold may exist or that there is no way it exists. It's not that important to me. Here is the answer on what the location of the gold site that I was at was called by the locals.

"Cloud Mountain"

This reminds me of my favorite movie line from The Good Bad and the Ugly "and the name on the grave is... Arch Stanton

... Arch Stanton?" ??? grave unknown.jpg

"Cloud Mountain?" ???

I dont think any of the 3 names mentioned are trying to prove it doesnt exist. We had a member SWR that was convincved it didnt exist and started many arguments here. I dont know what happened to his posts. Many members were lost in the new TN conversion. I believe we are seeking the truth whatever it may be.

Wanna have some fun?

Go back and reread this thread from the start.... LOL! Remember Capt'n Bil? He was such a hoot...
