I was searching ship bell images today. The shape of the bell itself is typical of the older bells of antiquity.

Correct... and this is what grabbed me upon first sight of this bell... along with the font and motifs.

Its a shame the argent and canon are missing from this bell... these parts... if still intact ...would help puzzle... And that top may still be there in very close proximity of where this part was found.

And... I have seen this... somewhere... on something... 90% sure.

Ahhh yes.

Losses of vessels during this time... Especially this time frame... were extremely numerous.

Sheesh I think for every 2 vessels constructed one would be lost...And 90% of the time both met the same fate.

Very few ships endured a lengthy "career" and most were lucky to make more than one voyage in many cases.

In fact... prior to the 1500's lengthy voyages were very few and far between due to the "sketchiness" of making it back alive.

Hence North America's eluding discovery.

Remember most believed the earth was flat and vessels that did not return fell off. heh

Well foundries were numerous... and bells were a major part of production in all sizes... for bells were the "cell phone" of the times.

They were THE form of communication... on ships they primarily served as a signaling device to other ships and to land as to location.

Fog and poor visibility presented a clear and present danger of running aground OR more importantly... running into each other.

This bell ... I think... might me able to traced to the maker IMO.

Good possibility.

In fact ... I read about one during this research endeavor that may be a good fit / guess.

But will keep this under wraps as to not confuse or to speak prematurely in that direction.

when it gets cleaned, assay a fragment - could be conclusive re the foundry (country)

the 'palmetto' design is also a border style on wall painting/decoration (wallpaper today) - ring any bells?
I've not spent enough time in Spain to know.

Yeah well my "wallpaper knowledge" is severely lacking.

In fact... I am trying to "cut down"...

Anyway... no... I saw this (remember I stated I THINK I have seen this) ... and am pretty sure... although you know how some things in memory go...

on something.

I think was on a map... or drawing... or in a book... somewhere... I have seen this... and if not exact... close.

Oh... and I am not so sure IMO... that this is a "palmetto design".

Personally I think this signifies something else... and the number of them also coincides.

Very few things like those designs were just put there (like that... in that way)... for "decorations".

Decorations were a "continuance" of flow... like scrolling or filled... this distinguished "meaning from non meaning".

NOW... I state the above last sentence IN MY OWN opinion only... not something learned from other.

Those "designs" definitely have "significance"... they IMO are definitely not JUST for "décor"

Cleaned up the thread by deleting some of my posts... as to not totally "hog" it.

we need an art historian (and if we are not prudent that bell could be seized)
the 'palmetto' motif could be Egyptian, Babylonian, Greek, Roman -> Catholic,
what was attractive was copied, reused, named, renamed, etc.
