Ok, this wasn't this past weekends find but it was last weekends find.
Thought I would do a little detecting up on the mountain here in Alabama.
But I found out it might still be a little early. I was just a swinging away in the woods
when all of the sudden I just happen to look ahead of me a few extra feet and there
he was, one big ugly timber rattler. Well since I had not found anything else that day
I tied him to my detector and went home. (after I hit him in the head with a club) ;D
Then I mounted him this past week, and it turned out pretty good..
Sending a few pics. Please be careful out there, those no shoulders are moving
around.
Bandit

I'm with the looked nicer alive bunch, I believe here in Pa the rattlers are on the endangered list.. I hit one with my car a few years ago.. thought it was a stick on the road.. So I had to turn around an pick it up an report it to the DER ...I love any type of snake, wasn't for them we would be over run by mice an rats!! Colonial Silver Zeus , I also would like to pick one up some day.. but not sure my nerves would allow me.. I probably would shake so much the snake will either bite me or my grip around his neck would kill it...

nice mount and pretty looking rattler, we don't have the timbers here.

I pride myself as a country girl; however my daddy raised me with common sense you kill it REAL DEAD to make sure it stays that way, and you don't bring it home for show and tell. J/K

I just killed a baby about 8" last week, on the caliche road where the kids walk to catch the school bus. Then that weekend my hubby went to the ranch a couple hours away. Got there at dark and was setting the hog traps with only a little light that attaches to his hat. He was about to crawl in the trap and was down on his hands and knees when he saw movement. He hit it with his little light and seen a huge huge rattler coiled. (I would not have had to worry about a snake bite at this point, because I would be dead of a heart attack.) So he sends one of the kids back to the truck which is some distance away to fetch the gun and spotlight. In the mean time his little light goes out and its pitch black.(I would of needed to change my drawers) My son returns with the gun and spotlight and the snake is gone. He was probably around 7ft. Needless to say they decided that they did not need to set the traps that night.

You may need the pied piper to woo all those rats that will eventually invade due to lack of natural predators.

I hope you feel really tough now since you killed it. >:( ::) I, too, would NEVER kill an innocent creature.

O! MY! Gosh! :o
I didn't put this on here to Pizz people off. :icon_scratch:
It was kind of to show you my taxidermy skills
and just to let you be aware of the dangers you
might come across while detecting this time of year.
For those of you that I have upset, PLEASE FORGIVE ME!!
I never meant to make anybody angry over a Rattle Snake.
I also never new that they were on any kind of threatened list.
Seems to be plenty around here. So again Sorry!

NOPE! We leave the king snakes, rat snakes, and blue indigos, alone. We also have a nice population of barn cats, bobcats, coyotes, and hawks that clean up the rat/mouse population. Growing up I knew of 2 people who were bit by rattlers and died before getting to the hospital over an hour away. One was a boy about 7yrs of age. So I would just assume not to take any chances especially with my kids.

Don't sweat it Bandit! I think you did a great job on the mount. I'm glad you posted it. And anyone that "stumbles" on to a rattler would and will appreciate the mount more than the live version. Maybe it's just us country boys and girls that appreciate the difference!

Thanks,
Mark

lol... Nice find man. And I think taxidermy is a cool hobby. You scored in your other hobby.

Hope you didn't think I was taking over your post with the Pic of the rattlers. 9 beads is a nice size snake.
Congrats on your skills.

I would have that sitting up in my office - It is a nice mount.

One hit my father in laws snake boots years ago, He said it was like someone hit him with golf club (The force). Thank goodness he had them on.

I had a feeling there would be mixed emotions on this post when I first saw it.

While I'm not one for ever killing an innocent animal (except for the occassional spider), I have to admit your taxidermy skills are quite impressive.

I would have been out of there so fast if I saw that thing. Not a big fan of snakes but I can't even imagine coming across a rattlesnake in the woods. My big fear is spiders for some reason.

No apologies are necessary! You did a respectable thing, most of us that were raised in the great outdoors appreciate and respect the beauty in all animals great and small. There are a few occasions when the elimination of pests are part of the order of nature and fortunately we are a part of that. You should not be overly critical of yourself because some do not understand this. Your taxidermy skills are outstanding! and something to be proud of! It's sad that we can no longer have an opinion and "agree to disagree" on occasion without drawing out vehement behavior from the far side  :tard:. Great post and good hunting in your future, respectfully yours TLR

Man that is a great job.... I hate snakes and I would have been about a mile away before he even knew I was there.

As far as anyone getting on you about it... Remember people we are also part of the cycle of life. This great earth is there for us to use and to live off of. Think of the folks who lost the things well all crawl around looking for. Those people from colonials, Soldiers, etc. Lived from he land and it is sad that we are so far removed from that. With all the anti-hunting and PETA crap out there it just makes me sick.

If it was not for hunting and game management and the revinue created from this all the "cute" creatures you all love to see would not be here. There is more wildlife now Deer, Bear, Moose than there was 100 years ago. That is a fact.. check it if you doubt me.

I usually do not kill anything I do not eat except the occasional coyote. But atleast he made a great mount and did not just kill it and leave it like so many do.

Like I said it is a sad day when a man cannot post something he took great pride in making without getting bashed by all you tree huggers. Give it another 100 years and it will be wrong to dig a hole in the grass..... NO!!!!! PLEASE SAVE THE GRASS.....

Sorry to rant but these are the same people who if there kid got bit by a timber rattler they would be first in line for the Extinction of all rattlers.
