Ok, this wasn't this past weekends find but it was last weekends find.
Thought I would do a little detecting up on the mountain here in Alabama.
But I found out it might still be a little early. I was just a swinging away in the woods
when all of the sudden I just happen to look ahead of me a few extra feet and there
he was, one big ugly timber rattler. Well since I had not found anything else that day
I tied him to my detector and went home. (after I hit him in the head with a club) ;D
Then I mounted him this past week, and it turned out pretty good..
Sending a few pics. Please be careful out there, those no shoulders are moving
around.

In the Northeast Timber's are uncommon and endangered.I can't see killing one of God's creatures in the wild, doing what God intended it to do.If it was in your yard or by an inhabited area ,that could endanger someone, then it should be eliminated.
Sorry, but rattler's biting and poisening folks ISN'T WHAT GOD INTENDED THEM TO DO. That all ceased after sin entered into the world. Before that, they and mankind
coinhabited peacefully. After sin entered into the world, things changed.
There are other snakes that do right well in keeping the rodent population in check. And the man who remarked about keeping the deer population down THROUGH HUNTING and the dollars that it produces was right on target. (Sorry about that last pun.)
Humans and animals are not in the same league, as far as importance in the order of things. Or, when we move into an animal's territory, and that animal puts up a fuss, would we kill the humans who have established a home there? (Not saying that some common sense restrictions shouldn't be put in place, to protect animal populations. But,
if there is a case where it is human against animal rights......human life has precedence every time.

were you able to get the meat out before stuffing it? fat one like that is good eating!

That was my ?? too. & isn't it illegal to kill rattlers? I'd be careful how loud I tell this story.

let he (or she) who is without sin ,cast the first stone. --- even in a bowls of grain there are unhatched eggs of wevills -- of such tiny size we can not filter them out --- (the eggs can be killed up to a certain point in their cycle but its not 100% effective )--so the hatch point date is figgered at "normal temp" and a "use by date" put on iboxes of cereal --- predated before the "hatch out" date --yep you vegan type folks have been eating them "unhatched" bug eggs fer years ---killing all those poor helpless critters before they even have a chance to live --- just to fill your greedy bellies with food -- for shame . ---- so now why don't you go eat meat like you always have been doing and get real.

in the south there is no shortage of rattlers **** please if you folks up north (where it seems you got a shortage) want deadly poisonious snakes feel free to have your fish and game or DNR folks come get a bunch of ours here in florida -- I personally know of an area that I like to deer hunt that has truckloads of 4 - 6 foot rattlers(which I would not miss a bit) and I bet the state of florida and the timber company will say they can have all they want.

That one would have required two clips full from the old Glock. Nice mount, captured his smile really well!
I gotta agree with you willpond on this one, if I walked up on an ugly 4 1/2 ft rattler there wouldn't be anything left to mount once my Glock got done firing!! Good post and a very sharp looking mount

Bravo! That is one scary find! Bravo!
I think I'll pass on trying to get one of them.

Interesting story and nice pictures.

Here’s a healthy balance to the, better looking alive vs. killing it…I just want to add, but not perpetuate

I love all creatures way more then humans…and that’s the truth. I have a very healthy respect for all creatures and nature. And, I love snakes…I really do.

Whenever confronted with the debate of humans killing wild animals, I have to remember one thing (and each species, humans and animals have the right to live) However, it you know animals, they don’t stop to think when they’re confronted with a natural enemy, they strike first and possibly kill.

If a wasp gets into my home, it’s dead, period. A mole screwing up my yard…it’s going to be found and killed! (or, I import a snake…lol)

The same is so for another animal entering into another animal’s domain, they kill it for entering. Or, if one animal comes upon one another suddenly, they either run away, or the fight is on till one is dead…its nature.

I don’t judge someone for acting on a “knee jerk” reaction. If it had been me, I probably would have backed away and go the hell outta there, but if it had been in my area where I detect, I might have understood a reason for killing it. It’s a me vs. them outlook, no more no less. Also, fears come into play, and there are really no rational thoughts, no right vs. wrong way to “react” to the balance of humans living with wild animals, when instinct is in play.

I do however have a problem with people going out and seeking something to kill, simply for the sake of killing it. Though, I don’t think this was the case.

I totally understand it…I wouldn’t have done the same, but I wont judge someone for being different then me…it’s what makes us all, all species humans and animals alike unique.

I’m just glad the story didn’t involve having been bit, needing to go to the hospital, being ill and etc…it “could” have turned out that way too, but it didn’t.

NICE LOOKING MOUNT....MATT

I am a Country Boy, I have friends that kill and skin deer in their garages. I think its the most discusting thing a human being can do.

If in its own environment I personally would just walk the other way and leave it alone. In that case I am the intruder and it should have every right to bite me. As its just protecting its self as well. It won't chase you down and kill you because it wants to feel good about itself and something it can do.

We have no reason with today's food technology to kill anything. I can't recall who said this but... "As long as humans kill and eat animals they will kill eachother". Did you know Einstein was a vegetarian too?....Go figure :D

Don't worry nature is big enough to control itself. That rock alone should tell you your in Gods country, try and respect it. Everything alive fears death, so everything alive admires life. If it was not for the Tree Hugger and Animal Lovers its likely you would not even have that nice mount today.

Oh, and I don't condone smearing blood on anything.

That's a cool dog, a little guardian.

Whatever... to each his own!

Keep @ it and HH!!
Ugh, your kind just don't make sense to me. With today's food technology we don't have a reason to kill anything? As long as humans kill and eat animals they will kill each other? And then throw in talk about God's country...blah, blah blah. That crap makes my stomach sick. First it is God who put enmity between man and animals, He gave them to us to be a source of food just as he gave the fruit bearing trees and vegetation. Secondly, Country Boy, I know plenty of people who still hunt deer, bear, turkey, rabbit, birds and fish year round to feed their families and supplement their incomes now more than ever. My grandfather lived through the great depression and always said they lived ok and actually survived by hunting, fishing, gardening, having a cow for milk, and a few chickens for eggs, while making $500 a year income..... That's a real country boy.

dam i bet that rattle would have got me running dont do snakes

Sweet snake, my dog likes to try and play with them!

Beautiful snake and nice job on the mount!

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but why are folks saying this man should be harmed or wish harm upon a fellow human when in their opinion it is not OK to harm a snake? I am sure none of these folks owns a leather belt, shoes, a fur coat, or has leather seating in thier cars.....Or never ate a steak or a burger? It is easy for them to say "Look at me I would never harm or kill a living thing, I am BETTER that you!" Yet those same fingers that typed those words just reached into a leather wallet and pulled out money to pay for hamburger. I guess it is ok to contribute to the death of such "innocent" beings if you can drive to the store and buy them to eat or wear.

”Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measurement ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote (speck) that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and them shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.” Matthew 7:1-5
Your'e exactly right in what you say. People say it's not right to kill anything, but they definitely don't think that when at a restaurant eating steak, seafood, or chicken that somebody else killed. Come on people, this is exactly the same as the last comments made when this subject came up before. I guess he won't be back on the forum again. I don't believe in killing animals, or creatures, but I tell you now- I will kill anything that looks threatening to me. If that snake had bit me, do you think the first thought in my mind was "glad I didn't kill it because the people on Tnet are against it" Heck no, if I was in the woods, not near medical help, I would die, and get a lousy memorial, everybody feeling sorry that it happened. Believe it or not people, we are just a civilized version of the animal we are. Kill, or be killed.
I typically would keep my comments back on stuff like this, and I'm sure I won't make too many friends on this, but each, and every one of us has to make choices in life in every different situation that faces us, and it sickens me that a person uses his best judgement at the time, and gets a verdict 'guilty' by others after the fact.
My comments aren't to make enemies, but to give everyone an idea of 'what would you do in the same situation"

Great post. They are thick here in south east Tennessee. You hunt the old home sites in the mtns count on seeing them. What I wear snake chaps for, that and the copperheads. Timbers do not buzz lots of times and the swinging of the detector will make them strike. I only kill them if they are a hazard. If I can go around I let them be. Yeah they are on the list of leave alone in Tennessee. They are hungry right now from the winter and are shedding their skins and do not see as well when shedding so they strike at most any movement. Plus its mating time. The top of the heads are as fragile as an egg shell and a quick tap will do the job ...if needed. Our wild turkeys love eating snakes.
Lots of people probably never encounter poisonous biting stuff with their hobby . Part of the game around here hunting CW and relics.
Thanks for an interesting post, fun to read peoples reactions and then see where they hunt.
Yeah and I put around three deer in my freezer every year and as many to the food banks.

Nothing like voicing your opinion in a smarmy, demeaning way and expecting others to respect said opinion. I am pretty positive that you people giving him a hard time for killing a snake will not air out your alcohol, drug, prostitute, gambling, anger, issues here for others to judge. Meanwhile, your holier than thou attitude towards the poster probably pales in comparison to the fact that you beat your spouse or children, or maybe the vise that you pretend not to have and hide from everyone.

In other words, STFU please.
