The way I figure it is if the gold ore from the candle box was assayed at $110,000/ton at $20.67/oz, that's 5321 ounces per ton. At $33/oz, 5321 ounces would be $175,593. Divide three million by that, it's 17 tons of ore.

Hi Frank.. if it was ore, was it tested as a match to ldm ore? also 3 million in ore would probably equate to tonnage of material.. and at 1950s prices... thats a lot of rock.. how many backpacks full of ore at 60 to 80 lbs per pack times all 3 men.. kinda hard to comprehend... do you have any other details about discovery? also isn't there a visible cave on byuos butte that can be seen from f.r.172? thanks... jeremy

One kilos has about 30 ounces, so 74.536,16 divided to 30 give about 2.484,47 kilos = 2,48 tons of gold not considering the weight of the quartz or another material on the gold ore, which would make the ore cache at about 3 tons.

The assayer separates the gold from the quartz, giving you the troy ounces per ton of ore. Kilos do not have to be solved here, It's simply ounces of gold to every 2000 pounds of ore, which is one ton. I forgot what the silver content was in the assay.
I was also going by memory, and seem to remember someone stating that the price at time was $33 per ounce of gold. I just looked into the historical price of gold in 1950, and found that it was $34.72. That takes sixteen and a quarter tons to get $3 million.

When Garman died Tom found a million in cash under his bed. Phil and Travis suddenly had lots of cash. Over a million each. If it does not match your version your not in the loop. It was not general knowledge. The Mullen brothers found out and were digging up Byous looking for more.

what loop? i want in... it just does not compute.. 3 million in ore at $34/oz.
not to mention the ore did not come from byous, which means that tonnage was also hauled up there to be stashed.. mules or not.. thats a lot of work..
i wonder why travis's wife felt the need to sell the stones when they were rich.. a million in the 50s was crazy money.. hell, it still is..
