Smash and grab? The coins were just sitting on the bottom in full view. All they did was pick up the coins. What would you have done?

Did they call it "selective" archaeology? ;)

Hi Alex,
what I find strange is the silence of Francisco Alves. Cocked for a bell, but by a whole Mercedes "silence." Why?
Cheers VV

Claudio, for those of us that don't understand your coded message? What does Francisco Alves have to do with
the Mercedes or Odyssey?
Thanks, Ossy

Hi Ossy,
Francisco Alves is the "big boss" of the underwater archeology in Portugal since 1981. It is a State official paid by the State. He is a dogmatic archaeologist (this is my opinion) and a follower of the policy of "neither eats nor stops to eat."
In 2003 he organized the claim of the bell of the ship Santa Maria (of the first voyage of Christopher Columbus to America), whose replica is in the house of Columbus in Genoa (how was found is explained in my book Galleons and sunken treasure.)Well, in this famous building there is a note of thanks to me for my historical research and the discovery of the bell (Damned boaster!!).
Cheers VV

Ossy, I forgot. In 2005 TUPET SA, a Portuguese company with a capital (cash) of U.S. $ 9 million and chaired by Luis Valero, was negotiating with the Ministry of Culture of Spain and Portuguese Navy to retrieve the Mercedes. As this ship was a warship of Spanish Navy, it was necessary an authorization. Spain had accepted the proposal, but unexpected events occurred in April 2006, changed the situation. In May 2007 the cargo was recovered by Odyssey Marine.
Cheers VV

Very Interesting Claudio, Did Luis Valero get outbidded by Odyssey, Then Odyssey got back stabbed by some Spanish
business people?
So they took it anyway?

Ossy,
Court documents related to police operation called "Bahía 2" there are many indications of what happened in relation to Odyssey, Sea Hunt, Sussex, Mercedes, and many many details. Fortunately, these documents are written by the Spanish police itself, so tomorrow no one can say they're fake. In addition there are many people who have copies of them. It may seem incredible, but these documents explain many things, among them the Mercedes.

I trust the the Spanish police as much as I do Bernie Madoff. I know what they did to one of your fellow researchers, and unfortunately, fascism is alive and well in Spain. If these so called documents are so "telling," then why is it they were never presented to the U.S. Court?

Ossy... You'll never get a straight answer out of this guy, just smoke and innuendo.

This is not new. It was arrested in May 2008. Judge Merryday decided not to give Odyssey ownership of the wreck. I guess he didn't want to go against his Mercedes ruling. Funny thing is, he gave Odyssey ownership of a wreck off Lands End, but that was before the Mercedes case. Now, all of a sudden he claims the court has no jurisdiction to award Odyssey ownership of the wreck site. ???

"The plaintiff's amended motion for default judgment (Doc. 28) is GRANTED IN PART and DENIED IN PART. The motion is GRANTED as to the artifacts already within the territorial jurisdiction of this court, and the plaintiff is awarded title to the shard of glass, the ship's bell, and the piece of sheething described in Exhibit B to the motion. To the extent that the plaintiff requests title to all artifacts the plaintiff "will recover" from a wreck site covering a five-mile radius on the floor of the English Channel, the motion is DENIED. The plaintiff can secure title under the law of finds only after bringing the artifacts within the territorial jurisdiction."

P.S. I doubt if Odyssey will ever arrest another wreck unless they finally win the Mercedes case.

Well, there were a bunch of people who push the case in La Linea, finally opened by the Cadiz´s deputy prosecutor. Some local politicians, some silver haired local warrior and a little archaeological company from Malaga, which owners put a particular accusation against OME in this case (this gave then some local and press popularity and free access to the trial documentation) and were for a while on the papers saying, let say, curious things about OME and G. Stemm.

Trinidad... Have you heard anything new on this case?

Jeff, I just have off the record comments: this case will be reduced to nothing and with as less noise as possible. By the way, I'm surprised with Vox claiming all the time about his project with Luis Valero (and others) in Portugal and the Bahía II police papers. If I would be him, I'd better put a veil over.

Curious. A lot of money, officials and stuff to survey the same area that ten years ago surveyed RPM Nautical for a month and a half with the compromise of giving to the Junta de Andalucia the results of this survey. After so long time, no news about the RPM Nautical survey. And no news means no media news, academic news, archaeological news or any other news you can imagine.
