Hello everyone,

I found a silver charm or medal MDing in the beach, it looks religious it has a right foot with wings, maybe masonic???
in the back it has the word "sterling" and under it, it has some initials but it is to hard to read, maybe "HNY" or "HRY" the "H" is the only letter you can read clearly.

Does any one know when they started marking silver with the word sterling?????

I think it is very old, found on a beach next to a wreck.

I am still on my hunting trip i will get home tomorrow and will post pics.

Best,

Chagy..........

Got the pics, ENJOY!!!!!!

I am also thinking like RGency Military sports related. Not many people lived near Wabasso beach in the eraly 1900s so I am thinking more 1800s I am thinking on the shipwreck near the shore "Spring of Whitby" wreck in 1824, she sailed in the Royal Navy as the bumb vessel HMS Lucifer durins the "running of the Darnanelles"

As far as the mark of the artist: maybe Hans Jensen & Co. Norway 1710-1761
but there are many others like HJ Hones, HJ Wim, ect.,ect. I am still working on it.
the most similar one is H.J. Hans Jensen

Best,

Chagy.....

PBK : It's a duck. The distinctive bill and webbed feet are familiar diagnostic features, as documented in numerous ornithological works on waterfowl.

Gypsy: Based on the waddle and quack, I'd have to agree that it's a duck, although we need to do some research to determine the exact species and its migratory range. Also, check out this Aflac link.

Angelo: Sure looks like the ducks we used to have on the pond back home. I'm gonna have to go along with "Duck" on this one, too.

Cryptodave: Finally, somebody came right out and said it: "Duck!"

Conclusion: It may indeed be the mythological phoenix, an albino cassowary, the original albatross from Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, or just possibly a Richardson's goose which has recently undergone reconstructive surgery.

J/K, Chagy! :D Good luck with this one, and I'll be watching to see what happens.

I would think that if it was to represent some sort of athletic accomplishment, it would reference the event somehow. I'm still stuck on Catholic religious medal representing the elevation or resurrection of the soul.

Actually, it's fairly common for track medals to display a winged foot without any direct reference to the event. Here are some modern examples-- not being compared in any way to Chagy's, but just offered as an example of the use of the symbol:

Yeap!!! It might just be a DUCK.......But did you know that the story behind an artifact or piece can give it significant value, you would be amazed of the amounts paid for some pieces. With that said; can you assure its a DUCK or you just think its a DUCK.

Best,

Chagy..........

Found this

Whoa! Is that a close match or what? Identical style border, same maker's mark, and a school-related award, too.

What is the sound of one duck quacking?

I got it! Its from a Masonic Academy! ;) :D
I'm just joking with ya, Chagy buddy. You take ribbing so well, I just had to get a joke of my own in there.
Now we need to figure its age and how it got on Treasure Beach. Gypsy? help?
You may have an older version by the back markings.

BK, I always wondered what that funny icon in the corner was.
Check it out, you can buy it at a fair price...or ask the seller a question...believed to be from the 1950's or older. If it were mine, I would buy the similar medal to compare.

Well, I thought Gypsy would be back to cite the source of the medal she posted, but I guess she's busy restacking the ingots to make room for more. Anyway, noticing the little camera icon in the corner of the photo, I figured it was from eBay-- and so it is:

Once again, super sleuthing, Gypsy!

Oops Oops ...I always think everyone knows when they see that ebay icon on photos also....sorry

FWIW I think Chagy's is older than the ePay one. And that seller doesn't know what he/she has either. So Chagy doesn't have an antiquity but it is one cool medal.

Yes it is. It may have been lost by one of the first residents to swim at that beach, as few pepole lived there. There must have only been one school in the area.
