Hi chukers, could you give us the size. Good find, by the way :icon_thumleft:. I'll check my books when you post size and weight .

hammered

its 1 inch across... 8.7 grams

Its a little thicker than a U.S. Washington Quarter and a little bigger than a U.S. Washington Quarter... A U.S. Washington qurater is 5.7 grams.... so yeah its a bit bigger...

I was hoping one of you guys would know more about it... here it is 5 hours later and I am still excited about finding it!

I know its not a "real" find... it don't belong here... now I don't know if its a common find over there... but finding it here just don't seem right... yes its a real find but as far as it being my oldest coin find, it just not right mostly because I found it in Texas.

Why of course it's a "real" find. I think it's probably real but you probably want to go see a specialist to get their take on it.

You need to clean the lens on your camera......the same blur shows in both pics. Regardless, that is one super find!! Being in Texas, it gives me hope for something more than a '48 Merc!! ;D

Cool find, I have only found 11 Roman coins and I have detected where the Romans lived, LOL. HH, Mike

Clive Cussler makes a case for precolumbus contact in the Texas area....but I think the others are correct, it was from a collection.....nice find...goat

Re: I found what? in Texas? JUST NOW!

yes its a roman coin -- and congrats by the look of it I'd say most likely * yes its real --- yes theres a "easy" way to explain it why it might be there -- it a lower value "common" copper / bronze type coin -that a "normal" person might have in a coin collection --you say there were 1940 to 1960 era houses that were "plowed" under at the spot didn't you?----well a WW2 vet that was in italy or a post war tourist type person that went to italy might have gotten it aa a "keepsake" item or bought one from a coin store for their coin collection -- the coin got "lost" in the house one way or another and when the house got totalled out --you "found" it

Re: I found what? in Texas? JUST NOW!

I think I have got what I needed out of this thread... (unless someone finds an exact match) ;-)

in conclusion I will say this....

Does it matter where a coin of this age was found?
Does it enhance its history or does it take away from it?
Is it the same class as a roman coin found in old roman ruins or some plowed field?(does it really matter where its found?)
Does it matter that it wasn't lost by a roman?
Does it make it any less of a find because I didn't travel afar to find such an old coin? Like many of you have.

Theses are the kinds of questions I am asking myself... I guess to validate it being a "real find"

I know some of you are saying a find is a find no matter how it got there...

my oldest coin was an 1868 shielded nickel... now its a 200 A.D Roman coin... maybe its the fact that its such a great jump in age that has me questioning all this... I suppose I need to keep them in separate categories...

U.S. coins and Ancient coins

I thank all of you for your help... its been fun sharing this with you and learning about a history I would of never looked into unless I did find that coin. I will go back to that spot and search it more and see what else shows up and as I always do, I will post anything that I find of interest...

Again... Thank you

Re: I found what? in Texas? (kinda solved)

Go back? Not only "yes", but, ...........YES. It may have been part of someone's special collection that was hidden in the house that was plowed under. Just saying that there may be more of the same!

Re: I found what? in Texas? (kinda solved)

Very plausible that someone left it behind. Also very plausible that it was part of a bigger collection someone left behind. Looks like you've got a real honey hole to check out very carefully. Looking forward to seeing the next one(s) you dig up! :headbang:
