When we retired in 2006, I booked 2 one week cruises on the QE ll
The Eastern/Western Caribbean.

They were advertising a 6 month cruise to Australia.
I was all sign me up.

hole in middle is rock damage, hole on bottom is watch winder hole. Very difficult to photograph with plating falling and fine engaging. But it has flower towards top, banding, 2 circles on either side with sailing ships !! And lots of other decorative engraving.

I had max lay beside it awhile.

Not a hole for a key wind pocket watch. This is a hole made from a shot, or maybe from a punch.

Looking at the cover you have 2 areas of damage.

The rock area as you stated which is indented.

Now the hole area is indented also.
The inside is flared out.

I'm thinking more like shot hit the case.

One grazed it, the other went through.

Never would a keyhole be left as that rough.

Nor would it go through a number as it does.

It kind of looks out of place with the symmetry of the pattern too if you know what I mean. And why would they punch it through the numbers which were put there for purpose.
I can't see it as a winder hole either. It appears too crude for something which was made once with much care and detail.
