Oh Boy, wanted to find some more awesome finds like earlier this week on the giant field im detecting. Instead i learnt a very scary lesson about being helpless in the middle of nowhere with nothing but what you cary on your body and nobody around that might be able to help you.
Well, the day started bad because i had problems with my hand from all of this weeks detecting. This morning, the Hand was suddenly swollen like baseball glove so my girlfriend wanted me to go see a doctor. Was kinda concerned about it being a Thrombosis from the latex gloves that im wearing. At that time, i was already prepped to go on the field again because i was pretty sure it was simply from all the digging that i did the day before. Well, long story short...did not go to the doctor and went to the field instead. Girlfriend was beyond pissed but i was still optimistic i made the right decision.

An hour later i was at the site. Soil was very muddy and i decided to go further away from the Road because the soil was dry there. At this point, the hand was killing me and i felt like kicking my own butt for not going to the doctor. Wasnt really in the right mood for detecting in wet mud so the whole search wasnt really great. Found a few neat things but nothing great. I was getting down on the ground to dig out a small coin that i just detected and when i wanted to get back on my feet again, i saw a Hog on the other side of the field. And it was running towards me. I was immedietly standing up to look bigger. At this point, i was already bringing the detector away from me because i knew this would gonna hurt. Put it a few meters away from me on the ground, took my knife and my shovel out of the backpack and screamed to scare it away. No Reaction at all....just a wild hog crazily running towards me. Cant tell you the terror i felt at this point...i was in the middle of nowhere...there were no trees, no people that heard me, nothing that was able to save me and fat pig trying to stamp me in the ground. I was like...this is it. It´ll kill me. Decided not to wuss out but stand my ground. Took the shovel like an axe and beat it with it as it hit me like a train. Was flying a few feet through the air and probably broke my rib when i hit the ground. Shovel was flying through the air and was gone at that point. When i saw it was attacking again, i was snapping. Pulled my knife and stabbed it once in the rib cage but couldnt really bring it in. At this point, it made a loud roar and finally decided its better to run away. For the first ten minutes i was just sitting there and staring. Had total horror in my eyes because i was concerned it would come back. Then i decided its time to go, packed my detector and left. Was really glad i´ve put the detector away when i still could because that monster whould have smashed it to pieces. Thats probably the only good thing that came out of this day. Not sure how to deal with this kind of stuff in the future. I was not a threat to the hog or anything like that. Saw them at least 20 times in the past months and none of them ever attacked. Until today. Not sure but i might get me a hunting license or something like that. Dont want to make this experience ever again...Take care guys. Good Hunting.

Will post some pics from my finds later today in this Thread btw. Just wanted to share this story with you guys.

a one handed use size combo type pick ax / mattox si a tool I have and commonly carry ( it is quite good for digging in hard ground while detecting and is not thought of as a "weapon" by law enforcement types--as long as I have my digging mattox in hand and the problem is not a armed human I'm not afraid , ( for armed humans I carry a gun as well. since I live in america and can do so)--I know in europe lots of folks "rock climb" -- a rock climbers pin setter type pick ax / hammer should do the trick as well --with either tool a good strong hit to the head should pierce the pigs skull / brain nicely --end of game for the pig.

the single handed mini sized pick ax / mattox is small enough to carry --can be stuck thru the belt on the hip to carry , can be used as a digging tool while MDing and if needed makes a fierce fighting weapon as well --plus its not thought of as a weapon by law enforcement types and doesn't cost too much either. --all around a good little tool to have --since getting a gun for "self defense" is not easy in your part of the world.

sadlly you will have to let him get close to use it however -- me I don't like to mess around --I like to use a 7.62 x 54 R (russian) rifle round to dispatch them (from my WW2 era russian 91/30 sniper or my 1952 polish made M44 w/. bayonet attached to poke em with to be sure their fully dead-- nothing worse than a half dead pissed off big wild boar up close and personal --except a fully live one like you had that is )

get checked out medically speaking --wild pigs can cary physdo rabies ( a pig a disease --quite nasty )-- and with its hyper aggressive mood it might not have breen "right" mentally speaking--hyper aggressiveness is typical for the disease.

Sorry Kuger but you got me laughing cause I can just see you getting attacked by a wild hog... Who wins? a Wild hog or a Colt 45?? easy question!

Yea,I am sure it was pretty entertaining, with the sounds I was likely making.....I killed hogs for a living amigo....200+ a month at times ....all that were after me....I pretty much had it coming, got complacent

You missed a key component of the "hairspray defense". It was
"can of hairspray and a lighter"....

Not a kids toy, by any sense, but a can of hairspray and a lighter can do a
lot of damage. If you didn't know, spraying hairspray (away from you!) and lighting
the stream on fire can produce one superb little flamethrower. (edit in note:
the above is a VERY dangerous thing to do, so bring pepper spray instead!)

Couple thoughts: If all you have is a 9mm, don't stress too bad ..(unless you
aren't much of a shot when under pressure..lol). If the pig is coming towards you
(and they are faster than you might think), set your sights on the shoulder,
and start firing. Put as many rounds into that one shoulder as you can, and
it should disable it enough that you can escape.

The pepper spray is a great idea, IMO. Hogs can't see too good, and rely
on their noses for just about everything. If a large can, start spraying before
the hog is even close enough, and if it's breezy out get it up into the wind
that will be blowing over the hog, as well. If he gets a snootful of that
pepper spray, I can't imaging them wanting to continue.

Gotta agree with the other chap, too, as hogs have lousy eyes, and
odds are it only smelled you and considered you a threat. Good job on
bustin' him with the shovel!
I can just emajine this cenario...Good god I'm being attacked by a 300lb Hogg, I will just whip out my can of hairspray from one pocket, and my lighter from the outher :laughing7: in between crapping myself :laughing9:

Glad your OK for the most part Ill bet having a hurt hand didnt help. Seems the BLADE may have saved your life. If I were you Id try to get that hunting permit ,I believe you still could not carry a large Cal , handgun , but the shortest SHOT GUN allowable might be one of your best bets if not a large Fighting knife [fixed blade] IMO, I believe you have strict kinfe laws in parts Europe also ; so maybe one of the sprays other posters recomended might be best. Any way hope your feeling better soon so you can get back out there soon hunting one thing or the other & NOT being the HUNTED . Davers

Here in Missouri you are obligated as a sportsman to shoot on site any ferral hog

WoW! Glad your ok and got outa that scare! Good thing you stabbed it, thats what saved you from it coming back! What a nightmare that musta been man....I'm always looking over my shoulder to be aware of whats around me,no matter where i hunt! Insects of all kinds also suck!

You are very lucky to have gotten out of that one unscathed. I usually hunt hogs with a FN-FAL. A boars bone structure shields its pulmo-cardiac organs very well. Head shots tend to be what stops things. When gut shot they will still be at a dead run dragging intestines..... and yes... you can empty a 9mm, .40SW and .45 ACP into them before they get stopped.

If your laws allow.... a pistol grip 12 gauge shot gun with 00 buck would be your best bet. Other than firearms... A boar spear.... or a good machete at the least.

Anyone ever try bear mace on boar? I have always wondered what the result is.

Alright guys, just spent the day at the site the whole thing happened. Was a wonderful day and nothing disturbed my search. I guess it was a good idea to get on the horse again right away to keep my head from thinking too much. Took some Teargas, a few explosives from New Years Eve and the stuff i´ve mentioned before. Landowner was pretty much shocked and asked the local Huntsman to hunt the Hog down. Well good Luck with that...dont think he will get it but who knows. Maybe he´s lucky...i would be a happier detectorist if i´d knew the sow isnt up there anymore. When i put on my Detecting Clothes this morning, i realised the Hog had ripped huge holes in them which is kinda sad as i´ve gotten them as a birthday present from my gf in January. But hey, could have been much worse, couldnt it?

Finds from the Day of the Hog are cleaned and just drying up in the basement. :) Wont take long till the Thread finally gets its overdue finds...

I must say you are a tougher fellow than I.

I don't know that I would have fared as well.

I have been charged by a small pig.
Reason? I shot him... he was ticked off!
So he was gonna get ME!
After three hits with my revolver he was STILL coming at me... barely, but he was gonna do his best, last, to GET me!
Fourth hit was on the top of his head from about six feet as he was trying to crawl and bite me.
That planted him.

All except the last shot were poorly placed. I'll admit poor accuracy.

BTW, I was using a 10" barreled 44 magnum Virginia Dragoon single action revolver with hand loaded 240gr jacketed hollow points.

I did get a meal out of it, but not much more than that.

I will use a rifle if I ever hunt pigs again!

Maybe a machete should be carried with you.

if you can not carry a weapon for protection, get a rambo knife and sharpen it to razor edge. Or carry a large can of bear spray. Glad you walked away, it sure could have been worse.

Happy to hear your OK, A stand-off with a Raccoon is scary enough.... Let alone a wild boar !!
Keep @ it and HH !!

Alright guys, just spent the day at the site the whole thing happened. Was a wonderful day and nothing disturbed my search.

That's really good news. Hand's better too? About carrying and protecting oneself. I am not a violent person, more of a milktoast. When I hear about how governments being sooooo afraid of it's people that they start taking away the means. (it's called job security by the way). I think a person SHOULD carry, regardless of other opinions. Then, when attacked, protect yourself. Someone complains about it. Then, well, um uh err, "protect" yourself. ;)

This does bring to the forefront the reality that we are not as separated from nature as we lead ourselves to believe.

Be careful out there folks!

HH!

smells kind of squatchy around here

If the area is not plagued with hogs, then it should be a fairly simple job of tracking
that porker down and placing a rifled slug behind an ear. Take some corn and spread
it out in that field near a treeline. Dump it there same time for a couple days, then
go in and place a treestand 20-30 yds away, and with a good vantage point of the
"dinner table".

Wait for it. It'll be there soon enough......
