Oh Boy, wanted to find some more awesome finds like earlier this week on the giant field im detecting. Instead i learnt a very scary lesson about being helpless in the middle of nowhere with nothing but what you cary on your body and nobody around that might be able to help you.
Well, the day started bad because i had problems with my hand from all of this weeks detecting. This morning, the Hand was suddenly swollen like baseball glove so my girlfriend wanted me to go see a doctor. Was kinda concerned about it being a Thrombosis from the latex gloves that im wearing. At that time, i was already prepped to go on the field again because i was pretty sure it was simply from all the digging that i did the day before. Well, long story short...did not go to the doctor and went to the field instead. Girlfriend was beyond pissed but i was still optimistic i made the right decision.

An hour later i was at the site. Soil was very muddy and i decided to go further away from the Road because the soil was dry there. At this point, the hand was killing me and i felt like kicking my own butt for not going to the doctor. Wasnt really in the right mood for detecting in wet mud so the whole search wasnt really great. Found a few neat things but nothing great. I was getting down on the ground to dig out a small coin that i just detected and when i wanted to get back on my feet again, i saw a Hog on the other side of the field. And it was running towards me. I was immedietly standing up to look bigger. At this point, i was already bringing the detector away from me because i knew this would gonna hurt. Put it a few meters away from me on the ground, took my knife and my shovel out of the backpack and screamed to scare it away. No Reaction at all....just a wild hog crazily running towards me. Cant tell you the terror i felt at this point...i was in the middle of nowhere...there were no trees, no people that heard me, nothing that was able to save me and fat pig trying to stamp me in the ground. I was like...this is it. It´ll kill me. Decided not to wuss out but stand my ground. Took the shovel like an axe and beat it with it as it hit me like a train. Was flying a few feet through the air and probably broke my rib when i hit the ground. Shovel was flying through the air and was gone at that point. When i saw it was attacking again, i was snapping. Pulled my knife and stabbed it once in the rib cage but couldnt really bring it in. At this point, it made a loud roar and finally decided its better to run away. For the first ten minutes i was just sitting there and staring. Had total horror in my eyes because i was concerned it would come back. Then i decided its time to go, packed my detector and left. Was really glad i´ve put the detector away when i still could because that monster whould have smashed it to pieces. Thats probably the only good thing that came out of this day. Not sure how to deal with this kind of stuff in the future. I was not a threat to the hog or anything like that. Saw them at least 20 times in the past months and none of them ever attacked. Until today. Not sure but i might get me a hunting license or something like that. Dont want to make this experience ever again...Take care guys. Good Hunting.

Will post some pics from my finds later today in this Thread btw. Just wanted to share this story with you guys.

Glad you made it without serious injury, or worse. Of course, I can hear your girlfriend now, "See? I TOLD you if you didn't go to the doctor you'd be attacked by a wild boar!"

lol yeah. She said and i quote, "see, even the hog thought you should have seen the doctor." . I dont blame her for it. The situations you can get into while going detecting are pretty dangerous sometimes. Had to call the Bomb Squad and the police twice in the past half year and she´s pretty fed up with having to worry about me. In the end, she knows nothing can stop me from doing what i like but i definately understand her position and try to reduce all possible risks as good as i can.

i grew up in florida and did some hog hunting , have since moved to tennessee and we do not have alot of wild hogs here but my family raises hogs to butcher from time to time , so i am no expert but i have to agree with several of the posters here , wild or domestic hogs even can hurt and/or kill you . i am not sure how big they get over there , but they get pretty big here, i have seen them the size of a small cow , and yes they have been known to eat there kills also . and i also agree it is a rare occasion that you drop a charging hog with 1 shot.

you sound like you are a very lucky man.

I always have my 9mm with me.

I have shot several big wild hogs with a couple different handguns...and while they all did die...only once did the 1st shot stop one in it's tracks. Rifle or shotgun best odds for dropping one quickly.

That is exactly right!!!!One that gave me 29 stitches, and would have killed me if somebody else wouldnt have shot it,took all 9 of my .40 bullets

Hate to tell you but the 9mm is worthless for anything other than people!!!!Especially hogs, who have a very thick skull, and a protective shield of bullet stopping gristle over their vitals

Glad you're safe.we have wild hogs here to.I have found out over the years of being around them on the farm and in the wild, when you have an old angry sow or boar charging you and you have nothing to protect you're self with. The best thing I've found out is they can't turn fast while running so I always would just let them get pretty close them jump out of way from them till I could get to higher ground or something to use as a weapon.Take care.

:o Sounds like that Hog needs to be on the Barbie...glad your ok :icon_thumright:

SS

G A I've had a few close calls with them Hogs, they are something you steer CLEAR of,nasty critters !! A 400 lb. Boar with 6 inch tuskers would cause even a brave man to pee his pants! Glad you survived to tell about it,did you pee your pants?:laughing7: GodBless Chris

Most of us would argue that the 9mm is worthless for people as well! ;)

I wonder if G.I.B.'s ex-wife could turn fast while running...maybe that's some intel he could've used! :laughing7:

You are right Shamus. Wild hogs are like mini tanks. In the South even with a weapon we always look for a nearby tree.

Those wild pigs are mean SOB's that will attack anything around. The worst is a female with babies. Crazy stuff happens like that from time to time. When I was 10 living on Lake Eufaula in OK I was arrowhead hunting a creek and someones dog was falling me. He was friendly and I couldnt get him to leave so I just proceeded on. We were a couple hr's into the hunt when the dog went ape **** crazy barking. The next thing I know he takes off up the creek and I hear the worst screams from an animal I have ever heard. The stupid dog ran up on a Cougar and the big cat killed the dog. I dont know if it had a cub near by or what but I got out of there in a hurry.

I helped a guy 5 years back who was up a tree due to a big wild hog chasing him. We had been squirrel hunting that day so luck was on our side we had our 22's on us and shot at the pig to run it off and gave the guy a ride. Those pigs are a huge nuisance and destructive. Its very wise to take a sidearm on hunts these days. atleast some pepper spray or something. They are getting bad here in Oklahoma

I'm not sure if this will work for boars but we always keep firecrackers with us when camping in case we cross paths with a bear. I've been told that the loud (unnatural) noises from the firecrackers will deter a bear. Now of course I am talking about the North American Black Bears which are typically very shy animals anyway, but they are the only bear that we have to worry about in Virginia. I'd assume that if they felt their cub was in danger the firecrackers would make no difference but I think it would be better than nothing at all. I have yet to come across a black bear in the wild and hope to keep it that way. I've never seen a boar up close but they are nasty critters from what I can see of them on T.V.

Wow, glad I don't need to worry about that. The closest I've come to something like that was a huge guard dog tried to attack me, I stood my ground & the spade made me feel pretty safe until the owner came running over.
I hear they taste pretty good, so a hunt sound like a plan.
It does make me think why the Celtic tribes found them such a powerful symbol.

Glad it all worked out ok for you. When a person is unprepared or taken totally by surprise things can go either way.

We were prepared for these critters and gave 'em a good dose of our favorite hog Rx.

Might I suggest the following...(if at least you can possess a shotgun)

i.e. Saiga 12 gua. with #4 buckshot.

Now ya' see 'em...and next you see 'em in the cooker. m-m good.

Wow, I am glad you are still alive and kicking! One of the most riveting stories I have read on tnet. I have hunted large open fields and have seen wild pigs in the distance many times but have never had one charge at me. I always drive my truck into the field and am not too far from it at any time..... and in it is a 12 gauge pump just in case.

Glad you are okay. That would have been a very scary situation and could have turned out much worse. I always carry military grade pepper spray (500,000 heat units) to defend myself against people or animal attacks. It works extremely well without killing your attacker.
