Oh Boy, wanted to find some more awesome finds like earlier this week on the giant field im detecting. Instead i learnt a very scary lesson about being helpless in the middle of nowhere with nothing but what you cary on your body and nobody around that might be able to help you.
Well, the day started bad because i had problems with my hand from all of this weeks detecting. This morning, the Hand was suddenly swollen like baseball glove so my girlfriend wanted me to go see a doctor. Was kinda concerned about it being a Thrombosis from the latex gloves that im wearing. At that time, i was already prepped to go on the field again because i was pretty sure it was simply from all the digging that i did the day before. Well, long story short...did not go to the doctor and went to the field instead. Girlfriend was beyond pissed but i was still optimistic i made the right decision.

An hour later i was at the site. Soil was very muddy and i decided to go further away from the Road because the soil was dry there. At this point, the hand was killing me and i felt like kicking my own butt for not going to the doctor. Wasnt really in the right mood for detecting in wet mud so the whole search wasnt really great. Found a few neat things but nothing great. I was getting down on the ground to dig out a small coin that i just detected and when i wanted to get back on my feet again, i saw a Hog on the other side of the field. And it was running towards me. I was immedietly standing up to look bigger. At this point, i was already bringing the detector away from me because i knew this would gonna hurt. Put it a few meters away from me on the ground, took my knife and my shovel out of the backpack and screamed to scare it away. No Reaction at all....just a wild hog crazily running towards me. Cant tell you the terror i felt at this point...i was in the middle of nowhere...there were no trees, no people that heard me, nothing that was able to save me and fat pig trying to stamp me in the ground. I was like...this is it. It´ll kill me. Decided not to wuss out but stand my ground. Took the shovel like an axe and beat it with it as it hit me like a train. Was flying a few feet through the air and probably broke my rib when i hit the ground. Shovel was flying through the air and was gone at that point. When i saw it was attacking again, i was snapping. Pulled my knife and stabbed it once in the rib cage but couldnt really bring it in. At this point, it made a loud roar and finally decided its better to run away. For the first ten minutes i was just sitting there and staring. Had total horror in my eyes because i was concerned it would come back. Then i decided its time to go, packed my detector and left. Was really glad i´ve put the detector away when i still could because that monster whould have smashed it to pieces. Thats probably the only good thing that came out of this day. Not sure how to deal with this kind of stuff in the future. I was not a threat to the hog or anything like that. Saw them at least 20 times in the past months and none of them ever attacked. Until today. Not sure but i might get me a hunting license or something like that. Dont want to make this experience ever again...Take care guys. Good Hunting.

Will post some pics from my finds later today in this Thread btw. Just wanted to share this story with you guys.

Westfront, i totally agree with you about this. I guess we might even be from the same area btw. Westfront is a very well known word for me in my region.
Not a friend of the lax Weapon laws in some countries myself, i definately think i should have the right to defend myself. At this point, i dont know what i´ll do to give me back a bit of the security that i lost today. Thinking about getting me a mini crossbow for my backpack. I know you are not allowed to use them for hunting but i am pretty optimistic it should be legal to carry one with you just in case. I know it looks crazy but i dont wanna be in a similar situation again. I own a bigger crossbow already and i know there a very tiny versions that could easily be stored in a large backpack. Today, i would have had all time in the world to load it. I saw the hog running towards me for at least a minute or so. Or maybe i get me an extremely loud siren or a taser.

I know you are looking for a "reasonable" solution , but a handgun is even slow in a self defense situation , so I am afraid a crossbow may give you even less time to react. If firearms are not a viable option , then I would suggest a very large knife ,or pehaps a "strong spear pointed walking stick". The walking stick may help you put a managable distance between you and your attacker as well. I know the stick will present problems with your detector , but perhaps you could leave it stuck into the ground at a near distance to you , allowing you fairly rapid access to it.

I know the diggers that I carry would give me at least a reasonable shot at a rapid death for "hog" sized animals , but the problem is , getting the chance to use it and getting a good shot.

Glad you are okay. But just think of what a great story this will make for the years to come. Great experience , and a great adventure. I think you're a true wildman ; you walked off an injury to the hand , manned up and went hunting against girlfriends orders , and fought off a wild hog. So you have faced all of the worst dangers a man can face , all in a matter of hours. You need to change your name to Davey Crockett !

I prefer the mother of all hog killers. My Smith and Wesson .500 with 700 grain shots. They are nicknamed T-Rex Thumpers by the maker. Of course I live in Texas so I can carry it pretty much anywhere without being harassed.

Go where you apply and show them your wounds. Say you are a hunter of relics and these pigs hate relic Hunters so you need a weapons permit.

A good heavey caliber pistol would come in good right about the time it charged( I carry a Glock #24 in 9mm)................HH

Glad you're safe.we have wild hogs here to.I have found out over the years of being around them on the farm and in the wild, when you have an old angry sow or boar charging you and you have nothing to protect you're self with. The best thing I've found out is they can't turn fast while running so I always would just let them get pretty close them jump out of way from them till I could get to higher ground or something to use as a

Good Call, You are right, But ya gotta have the nads to wait till the last moment
untill you move........................HH

Really:laughing9::laughing9::laughing9: Little hand guns and hair spray . Try your luck with a razor back :laughing7::laughing7::laughing7::laughing7:

Is that a pig you killed? Theres been alot of pictures photo shopped .
Trying to come up with Pigzilla. jmho

The acp is a joke to a steaming boar sorry guys lol
You need the Total digger protection program

Taurus Raging Bull Magnum
6 shot chambers all these.
45 long colt
454 casul
.410 shotgun rounds

The 454 is a beast.
The 45 colt is easier to shoot but 2x the power of the acp
410 is available in buckshot too for personal protection.

It could be a real photo but if so it is a farm raised domestic pig. Wild ones do not get that big. An enormous and very rare wild boar would be 400+ but that would be few and far between. All of those 800 to 900 and up hogs are proven to be domestic hogs that escaped or were let loose.

What about those Bear Pepper Sprays?
If you got a can of Wasp Spray, it can shoot 20 yds or so and I hear it is as good as pepper spray.
Many people recommend it for home defense.
Not sure if you would have that kind of time though.
At least it wasnt a bear!

Would have been a good time to have one of these. You could have had delicious pork chops for dinner. Any way I am glad you escaped a bad injury!

Wild pigs have been a problem in Australia since 1788 . How many feral pigs today who knows . Millions ?

Finds of the Day

Hi Guys, here are the finds from that particular day. Nothing overly cool but a few things are neat. Highlights are the Big Cap of something on the first pic (coin is just for comparision to show the size), a few nice WW2 Shells from 1939, a musket ball, the mysterious coin i was digging out before i was attacked, a few nice buckles, a Lead Seal, some broken Spoons.

Something i was really happy about is an Broken Statue made from Iron. Its only the torso and the head, arms and legs are pretty much broken off but i guess you can see it was something nice once. Does anyone know what that reddish thing on the Pic with the bullets is? Looks like a smoking Tip or so.

Will be heading to the Field again now so i hope it will be a good day today... Hand is getting better by the day so thank you all for your friendly words! This is truly a wonderful place. A Treasure Hunters Heaven! bye GA

Yeah it's getting terrible. The pop in Texas alone is estimated at two million. Four million nationwide.

We have rumors of them around here from time to time.

I work alone in the woods a lot, sometimes quite a ways out there. This is the minimum I take along:

So far, it's just taken out vegetation too small to use a machete on. Hogs have been killed with that, but it's a bit too exciting for me. Better with dogs.

Here's the carry I take when I'm "back there", in 44 mag:

Still gotta take them seriously. They're darn smart.

Had hogs on the farm, and the "veneer of civilization" is only "skin deep".

Forgot to mention: I handload. The load I use is 25 grains of 2400 pushing a Kieth 220 gr cast with pure linotype lead (12% antimony, 4% tin, BHN of 22) = 1700 fps, chronoed. The old Blackhawk wouldn't take the load. These super hard babies hit a rock and barely deform, so they will NOT mushroom on anything less and push right on through. This is important.

as far as luck, buddy you've got some. I'd love to go hunting with you some time and find some french/german silver! be very careful with hogs though, if he cut you, you need to go to the hospital. Like several species of lizard, they have some pretty god-awful bacteria in their mouths that can cause necropsy among other things. I would also let the land owner know so nobody else potentially gets attacked by the same hog.

You have seen my videos. I'm alone in the woods all the time. I see evidence of them digging up the roots to eat but have never actually seen a live one. You've got me thinking now. I hope you feel better soon.

Also you may not have one but most of those hogs will run from a dog but if he corners it then its game on.

If he broke your skin at all you should probably get rabies shots. He may have been rabid.
