Oh Boy, wanted to find some more awesome finds like earlier this week on the giant field im detecting. Instead i learnt a very scary lesson about being helpless in the middle of nowhere with nothing but what you cary on your body and nobody around that might be able to help you.
Well, the day started bad because i had problems with my hand from all of this weeks detecting. This morning, the Hand was suddenly swollen like baseball glove so my girlfriend wanted me to go see a doctor. Was kinda concerned about it being a Thrombosis from the latex gloves that im wearing. At that time, i was already prepped to go on the field again because i was pretty sure it was simply from all the digging that i did the day before. Well, long story short...did not go to the doctor and went to the field instead. Girlfriend was beyond pissed but i was still optimistic i made the right decision.

An hour later i was at the site. Soil was very muddy and i decided to go further away from the Road because the soil was dry there. At this point, the hand was killing me and i felt like kicking my own butt for not going to the doctor. Wasnt really in the right mood for detecting in wet mud so the whole search wasnt really great. Found a few neat things but nothing great. I was getting down on the ground to dig out a small coin that i just detected and when i wanted to get back on my feet again, i saw a Hog on the other side of the field. And it was running towards me. I was immedietly standing up to look bigger. At this point, i was already bringing the detector away from me because i knew this would gonna hurt. Put it a few meters away from me on the ground, took my knife and my shovel out of the backpack and screamed to scare it away. No Reaction at all....just a wild hog crazily running towards me. Cant tell you the terror i felt at this point...i was in the middle of nowhere...there were no trees, no people that heard me, nothing that was able to save me and fat pig trying to stamp me in the ground. I was like...this is it. It´ll kill me. Decided not to wuss out but stand my ground. Took the shovel like an axe and beat it with it as it hit me like a train. Was flying a few feet through the air and probably broke my rib when i hit the ground. Shovel was flying through the air and was gone at that point. When i saw it was attacking again, i was snapping. Pulled my knife and stabbed it once in the rib cage but couldnt really bring it in. At this point, it made a loud roar and finally decided its better to run away. For the first ten minutes i was just sitting there and staring. Had total horror in my eyes because i was concerned it would come back. Then i decided its time to go, packed my detector and left. Was really glad i´ve put the detector away when i still could because that monster whould have smashed it to pieces. Thats probably the only good thing that came out of this day. Not sure how to deal with this kind of stuff in the future. I was not a threat to the hog or anything like that. Saw them at least 20 times in the past months and none of them ever attacked. Until today. Not sure but i might get me a hunting license or something like that. Dont want to make this experience ever again...Take care guys. Good Hunting.

Will post some pics from my finds later today in this Thread btw. Just wanted to share this story with you guys.

I have thought about this sort of situation many times as I am usually a solitary hunter. Here in Northern Cal. we have Hogs, bears, and cougars in the forests but most of the hunting is urban and the predators are much more dangerous. Guns are not a good option because with the current laws you simply cannot stand your ground be they man or beast. I like the Idea of the pike perhaps working one into the handle of a shovel but finally there is safety in numbers. Do not hunt alone. Anyone in the San Francisco north bay need a hunting partner ?

Wow, that is crazy. Was the hog one of those kind with canine pointed teeth? I always wonder about bear which are prevalent in my area. We have practiced laying on our stomach and covering our head but not sure if that would be the best way! Too bad you didn't have mace or a gun with you. And listen to your girlfriend and see the doctor!!! Good luck.

Sanddigger's avatar shows what you need. A trident (or pitchfork) would do well. And you can maybe dig with it too.

What the hell??! Man...crazy story. I've often worried about bears in the woods where I'm at...or a crazy fox. Only thing us detectors can do is use a shovel or a knife. Most of us don't carry guns on us. Glad you're alive and well!

I always have my 9mm with me.

You might as well spit at the hog...as use that toy.

A .357 mag or 45 ACP might be an equalizer...a Hi Base 12 GA Mag slug or 00 Buckshot would certainly be a show stopper...

Was ear-tagging my daughters 240 lb 4H market hog at a County Fair a few years back...and was bitten on the right arm...took about 3 months to heal, mainly from the bacteria infection...

Can't imagine the damages from a wild hog on steriods...

Hogs, domesticated or ferrel, are known to charge a man...and even kill and eat them...

Glad you are not hurt too bad. I just started MD and there is a spot in the woods I went to with someone else who said there were wild hogs all over the place there.

So what do you do? Carry a gun, get popped by the police/ranger and go to jail? Or get bored by a hog? Well I didn't carry, but I did bring a machete in my back pack which gave me some comfort. I think a machete and some nasty pepper spray might be a good combo, short of carrying.

ya fought him off with a knife , good for you 8-) I carry enough weaponry where that pig would be a pulled pork sandwich if that varmit attacked the dawg :laughing7:

Wow, that brings back a bad memory. I was on the Island of Crete walking the beaches from one small village to the next when Ma Nature called, so I see a cave
not too far away from the beach and go in to lose some beer and "Snort Snort" here is this wild boar/hog/pig whatever, I didn't stay there to find out.
I run as fast as i could into the sea and swim as far out as I could and that thing is standing on the shore waiting for me to come out. No way! I got to the next village soaking wet and when the local greeks asked what happened, they laughed at me for being so dumb. Live and learn!.....Joe

if you cant carry a gun, try bear spray not sure if it will work on a hog, but i guess its worth a shot!!!

Are stun guns legal there? I have a 5 million volt stun gun that i got off of ebay for under $50. First time i hit the switch inside to test, all of my dogs hid in terror. It should take down a cow. I would hate to get close enough to a boar to use it, but it would put him down. Glad you are OK.

Glad you are ok and yeah, you def need to pack something with you next time.

Grab it's ears, Hop on it's back and Wrestle it to the ground.
and make him Squeel like a pig.

By the way Where are your pics of your Finds ? What did you find ?

Glad your ok and not severely hurt, those boars are aggressive and are out of control over populating, do you have a conceal permit to carry a weapon with you next time?

Best visit a doctor. I don't know if animals have rabies in your area, but better safe than sorry.

I agree that you should have some sort of gun with you but since the law won't allow it, just make sure you have a good hunting partner with you who can't run as fast as you can!

Shame you can't have a gun....Taurus Judge would be a great option for you....

I like the idea that if you "can not" carry to get some grizzly bear spray. It will eat it's face off. Also the raid wasp spray that shoots 20 feet have heard is good at stopping things. I have hunted hogs all over the USA and they can be very nasty. It sounds like you are very lucky. Hard enough to drive a razor zwicky broad head in one let alone a pocket knife.
Glad you are ok now go get that hand looked at.

Damn thats crazy, this could have turned out much worse than being bruised up. Its got to be tough when you live in a society that does not allow firearms for personal defense. I have a older friend that killed one with a shovel on Cape Canaveral in the early 80's when he was working on some phone lines for the phone company after it charged him several times. He grew up hunting in the swamps down there and did not phase him one bit. Personally, for me anyways, there is not much to be scared of in the woods, I carry a Glock with me just in case some sort of crisis arise's. Glad your well. HH

You do need to get any wounds looked at immediatly.Hogs feast on decaying carrion...the more the rotten the more they seem to like it,also fermented organic material which all grow nast organisms....terrible infections. You can also contract Brucelosis from Pigs

That is crazy. Glad you faired ok considering. I've read how hard hogs are to bring down even with heavy handgun loads. I read of one that had been shot through the heart and lungs and still charged for several seconds. I don't know what kind of shovel you use, but if you can get your hands on an old American army shovel with the pivoting pick, it can be a very formidable weapon, especially if you modify the tip a little and sharpen the edges of the shovel. Hope you stay safe from here on out.
