Chalcedony. Value is pretty low. I'd have it slabbed/sawed as to see if there is a nice pattern inside - which adds to value.

Ok, now serious answer; probably a silica-based thing. Sedimentary? Uncertain of exact ID. Might be flint, chert or something similar.

My husband found this rock while digging a backyard at work. It made an explosive sound and this is a piece of a bigger rock. Found it in a backyard is Silver Spring, Maryland. Could it be a valuable rock?

Quartz, maybe some chalcedony in there to. One of the most common minerals on earth!

Myself I do not know however there is lots of info online and maybe contacting some one from one of those sites that have knowledge
about scandium will lead you in the right direction in finding your answer. One thing I know is that from reading up on this, scandium is a very interesting element.

Would like some help putting this to rest. 8lbs. Density over 7. Not magnetic. State geologist doesn't know, fascinated by the long grains. Meteorite expert at State U, wants to slice a chunk off for analysis. I think it is Zinc, but have a tough time understanding how it ended up in North Dakota and is 8lbs.

Also took it to a rock/gem show where someone put a "window" on it. Result was a perfect mirror, like chrome.

Also Also, tested hardness, and my pocket knife doesn't scratch it. Zinc shows hardness of 2.5 so I guess it can't be that.

Those are cut pieces. Best to take those to a gemologist or at least someone whom can look at them in person.

Pyrolusite would be my best guess. But the Specific gravity doesn't quite match.
Streak test?

Diorite/diabase. Take with a pinch of salt, ID'ing 'rocks' as compared to 'minerals' is trickier from a pic.
Magnetic due to magnetite occuring in the rock, same reason the MD is set of by it.

A mafic (possibly metamorphic) mafic rock. I'd see if a knife can scratch it - if so; serpentine.

Hi,

I'm fairly new to the world of rocks, but have been showing an interest in them lately and would appreciate some help in identifying two rocks please.

They were both found on the Ceredigion coast in West Wales, one in New Quay and the other Cwmtydu. My daughter wanted to find some 'heart' shaped stones to take home and this is how I found them.

I think they're both sedimentary, but would like to know as much as possible about them please, including the red colouration on the larger rock.

Belonged to a friend who kept this sitting in his shop office. No idea where it came from, but always liked it. His wife gave it to me after he passed. Weighs about 8 lbs, gray with deep red "veins". Will suck a cheap, weak magnet to it from a half inch or so..
